Distance, distance, distance. We would all like to hit it further. But given the choice (think of Congressional this weekend), would you like to be 20 yards longer and into the rough or 20 yards shorter and in the middle of the fairway?
For me, accuracy trumps distance every time. Remember the mantra I always give DJ: 'fairways and greens, fairways and greens.' It's a simple fact that the more fairways and greens you hit the lower your score.
In the blog John said he hits his 3 hybrid better than his driver. Why is that? Hybrids are easier to hit, they're shorter, more like irons and have greater loft. I wonder how long the shaft on John's driver is compared to his 3 hybrid? My guess would be a few inches. Right now I'm experimenting with a short shafted driver. Maybe I'll call it a 'hybrid driver.'
Another thing about distance. We know as we age we don't have the power we used to. I know I don't. Well, it's time to replace power with accuracy. It's time to play who we are, not who we think we ought to be.
