Today, I'd like to talk about certain factors of the setup that are very crucial to becoming a good ball striker. In the Peak Performance Golf Swing, the setup determines the motion. One element of the setup position is posture, which should be similar throughout all of the clubs in your bag. Bad habits in the setup can lead to bad results in the air, so don't forget these other elements as well.
In the video you'll hear me discuss different aspects such as arm hang, posture, and hand positioning. As the club shafts get longer and the lie angles change, the easier it becomes for any one of these elements to falter. Problems like leaning over or stretching out your arms too far are some common problems I see.
If you haven't done so already, check out 3 time PGA TOUR WINNER, Kenny Knox in our newest video to hit Surge's Shop. As you can see in the sneak preview, Kenny has a fantastic setup and one that takes all of these elements I've discussed into account.
Keep it vertical,
The Surge!

You didn't read my comment on how not to create multiple posts at the top of this column did you?
Ha ha ha ha! I figured nobody would.
When the shaft reaches the
When the shaft reaches the toe line, the left arm should also be parallel to the toe line.ÃÂ This is the point where the shoulder turn stops.ÃÂ But, notice, this is not where the shoulder stops turning.ÃÂ As the club shaft reaches the toe line, the lift begins.ÃÂ But, to keep the equilateral triangle of the arms, the club head does continue to come to the inside a bid more.ÃÂ However, it does not go behind the heel.ÃÂ From what you are describing that you were doing, you would be more likely lifting the club up over the head rather over the shoulder and this would also require the right elbow to be more in the "flying elbow" postion rather than being in the equilateral position. Seems you are now on the right track.

Well done RM, just had an hour watching at Torrey Pines. Amazed. TTFN
Surge and I had this
Surge and I had this discussion a year or so ago.ÃÂ That is why he redid the video and the SBG was changed to behind the ankles.ÃÂ The club head stops at the toe line with the shoulder turn but the lift to where the shoulders are in the equilateral traingle, the shaft is over the shoulder therefore so is the club head.ÃÂ That would be the goal of a perfectly executed PPGS swing.
I fade and slice the ball
I fade and slice the ball with the longer clubs, it is getting better I am thankfully saying. Went to the range the other night and have been really working in dropping the arms at the top and not moving the shoulders.
I am sure I felt it, It felt like a slight pause but it couldn't have been because my arms were dropping, but I think I had this feeling due to the shoulders not moving to the ball. So it was like once I reached the top my upper body just stopped there whilst my hip bumped, arms dropped, it felt very strange but my drives were ok. Probably 20 yds to left or right of target or within. Which is good for me!
Not many real bad ones or killer slices, mostly fades from left to right of target or target to right, and some left. I cannot hit straight with the driver but I know I don't swing consistently with the driver.
I too can feel myself drooping more with the driver to compensate, also to get the shaft lower so arms hang more freely I am sure my wrists sometimes flex up towards the chin. I now just flex/firm them down towards the ball which seemed to make me a little bit more consistent.
I have been working on being more upright and ready as I do feel slouchy sometimes, probably over doing the heavy right with too much knee bend!
So this video was very relevant for me!
Thanks Surge.... ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ
I haven't seen the video but
I haven't seen the video but when I need extra loft I open the club face but also open my stance so that the club face, although lofted as if open, is actually square to the target line.
All of that sounds like what you said.
The difference for me is that since the open club face is square to the target line I no longer swing down the foot line but down the target line.
Sounds more complicated than it is. It is just like standing facing slightly toward the target and tossing a ball underhanded at the target. After the release the hand follows it toward the target, no matter where the target is in relation to the foot line.
Hi fellow Surgeites, all this
Hi fellow Surgeites, all this discussion about 12 o'clock and one piece take away. The 12 o'clock I have no problem about, it refers to the down line view, very simple.ÃÂ I was very confused about the one piece take away.ÃÂ Now I think "Shake hands (to the right, for right handers,) and lift."ÃÂ It works wonderfully.ÃÂ Re Dave Seeman's drills.ÃÂ I have stopped "Trying to hit the ball" and now "Swing from top of back swing to top of forward up swing."ÃÂ Thus I really complete the swing in the right position.ÃÂ Beautiful.
WT:ÃÂ Been there, done that
WT:ÃÂ Been there, done that, moved on.ÃÂ ÃÂ I played the 1-Irons for about two years.ÃÂ Good clubs, but I found that custom-built clubs by Doc Griffin were superior in every respect.ÃÂ A custom-built club will fit you like a niceÃÂ glove and will swing even better.ÃÂ And the cost is comparable to the factory-built clubs from the big-box stores.ÃÂ Hit 'em straight!ÃÂ R2ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ

R2,
The wife and I just watched "7 days in Utopia" movie. A wholesome movie about a young pro learning his way in life and golf. Anyhow it was enjoyable. it turned out to have some spiritual implications.ÃÂ It was a fresh breath of air and enjoyable. Carry a theme of "See it, Feel it, Trust it".
Was an interesting coincidence that the face forward (side saddle) putting method was somewhat featured too.
Going to stick with the short stick conventional style for now. Interesting food for thought though.
ÃÂ While cleaning my clubs
ÃÂ While cleaning my clubs after a practice yesterday, I got out two of my drivers and set up with them. Left them leaning at a corner on the wall indoors. Noted that on was MUCH more toe up than the other. Your note above gave me food for thought. Once the weather brightens up, I will give it a whirl. Irons with me, not too much of a problem. My 24deg [7wood] Rescue club is the best in my bag at the moment,ie, shorter shaft etc. After that I think I am reverting to a 'rotational swing' darn it. GBSAPS

I posted a response to this a bit ago and I come back, and it's gone. What's up with that. Anyway, thanks for asking about Vaughan. She is doing remarkably well. Her CT scan check ups have been moved from every 3 months to 6 months. The grapefruit sized tumor is now the size of a golfball. The doctor says that he thinks what is left is scar tissue and "dead" matter.
As for the shaft question, it is impossible to give you a specific answer without fitting data. If you'd like to go to our website (www.docgriffingolf.com on the product page) and fill out the Long Distance Driver Fitting form, I can give you a precise recommendation. More important than flex is entire shaft profile as well as loft. It is also important, in my opinion, to make sure that the shaft is in the correct playing position (spined and floed).
In general, for the club head speed you mentioned, a shaft with lower kick, lower torque would be in order. I would be glad to help you more specifically if you wish.

DH:ÃÂ It is a good reminder
DH:ÃÂ It is a good reminder, isn't it?!.ÃÂ When I met with Doc Griffin last September, IÃÂ found that I had several set-up problems and oneÃÂ was standing too close to the the ball, which causes all sorts of problems.ÃÂ He very patiently explained that to assure proper set-up and correct distance from the ball,ÃÂ I needed to keep the butt-end of the club far enough away from my body so itÃÂ pointed along an imaginary line drawn parallel to the ground,ÃÂ somewhere between my nose and chin (as Surge talked about in this video).ÃÂ The key for me has been to find that point,ÃÂ while assuring each ÃÂ club is soled properly.ÃÂ Not hard to do, just hard to remember sometimes.ÃÂ Anyway, enjoy the rest of your week and as always, hit 'em straight and GBSAPS.ÃÂ R2

Sorry to take so long to answer you re the gloves Russty Kiwi. I didn't get them in NZ my daughter sent them from UK for me. You can get them in Australia, I saw them advertised. Just chase "HIRZL Gloves" two sizes only Medium and Large. I have small hands and the medium ones fit well. They claim 3x the grip in dry conditions and 5x the grip in wet conditions. I can vouch for the dry conditions only so far, but am sure that they will live up to expectations. Will see if I can find them on line in Aus. Well worth the money mate.

Thanks for thinking of Vaughan.ÃÂ She is doing remarkably well and has had her CT scans moved from every 3 months to 6 months now.ÃÂ What was a tumor the size of a grapefruit has shrunk to the size ofÃÂ a golfball and the doctor thinks what is left is scar tissue and dead matter.ÃÂ She is truly my miracle.ÃÂ
As toÃÂ your question.ÃÂ It is really impossible for me to answer specifically without having fitting data.ÃÂ If you want to fill out one of our Long Distance Fitting forms (available on my web site at:ÃÂ www.docgriffingolf.comÃÂ on the products page) I can answer with specific recommendations as to shaft, length, and loft.
In general, at that swing speed you would want a lower kick, lower torque shaft.ÃÂ Another important aspect, in my opinion, is also getting correct MOI as well as having the shaft oriented in it's proper playing position.
Wouldn't that glove make it
Wouldn't that glove make it hard to grip the club properly?
Just asking. :-)
DH,
DH,
I must be loosing it. I do not even recall posting that particular question. I wish I new the date of it, or the particular video it was in response to. My assumption is, it is from a while back, but we all know the old breakdown on the word assume, and what it makes out of U and Me. It certainly would not be the first time I forgot saying or asking something.
Thumb and hand still hurting, but hopefully mending well. I can only imagine the pain Mike must be having, probably his entire arm. At least the pain meds induce some nice sleep, but weird dreams.
Have never tried the Kangaroo glove's, they sound like they might be worth a try though. I generally use the cabretta or just an all weather synthetic. Do they come with a pouch for your Tee and ball marker. Sorry, couldn't resist, it's the meds.

Nicely put Russty, I call it
Nicely put Russty, I call it hitting the ball crisply or cleanly. It is such a pure feeling. When we hit the center of the sweet spot it is amazing how it seems there is no vibration in the club and it is oh so painless and pretty. Makes it all worth it :)
ÃÂ Keith Kent's comment
ÃÂ Keith Kent's comment about "not moving the shoulders" on the downswing motivated me to post this inquiry to see what others thought about the role of the shoulders in the FUS.ÃÂ After watching a video of my swing, I noticed that
the plane going through my shoulders were rotating rather flat (down the line view), for lack of better words.ÃÂ The plane was not even perpendicular to my spine angle.
I went back to look at Don and DJ hitting through the bag, used some crude measuringÃÂ instruments, and noticed that their plane through the shoulders were actually dipping below a line perpendicular to their spines.ÃÂ
So, I tried this for three days, difficult at first because my shoulders are rather tight, and the results were rather interesting.ÃÂ I was able to keep my balance a lot better, I think because it made me to loosen up my shoulders in order to execute the move, it naturally opened up to the target more freely into and after contact;ÃÂ and I made better contact with the ball. Drives consistently went 10 yards or so farther.ÃÂ Those were the real changes.
There is one other change that may be moreÃÂ imagined than real. My hand feels more connected to my body instead of just "out there."ÃÂ It feels like my shoulders and right hand are working together to bring the club head to the ball, like the shoulders and hands can now work together to position the clubÃÂ in 3D space.ÃÂ I did not get this feeling previously. ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ
An issue that Surge should
An issue that Surge should clear up once and for all.
Surge says not to go behind the toe line.
Doc says not to go behind the heel line.
I say keeping it inside of the butt line with a driver is about as good as it gets, and even that is unlikely to happen on the course.
Easy enough to see where it actually is. All we need are 3 driver swings with a camera on the toe line, on the heel line, and on the butt line.
From the scorecard it looks
From the scorecard it looks like it was "one of those days". :-(
Maybe things will come together soon.

Painrxer,
Here's a couple suggestions. One, short of buying a better computer with a better sound system you could first simply plug into your computer with headphones. You'll be getting the direct sound from your pc. Another option is to buy mini speakers for your pc.
I have great sound and have never had a problem hearing these videos. And trust me, as an old time rock concert attendee,(dozens of loud concerts and loud music for decades now and counting), I don't have the best hearing but with my sound on loud and ocassionally using headphones, no problem!
As I like to say, my hearing is going bye bye but at least my vision is leaving too! Sarcasm intended:) Good thing I still have my looks and charm!

Thanks for that Steve, I was having problems with it yesterday and ended up posting multiple times : - ( Punishment for being a Great Big SAP yesterday. Roy Reed would have smacked my wee hand, On my usual whim, I dropped my clubshaft across my toe line on the first tee. That was after aiming, visualizing etc. Imagine when I noted that I was aimed dead straight at my intended target with club etc, but the toe line was off by a few degrees to the left. Straightened the clubshaft parallel and hit the longest and straightest off the tee on that hole, my usual nemesis. One where I have been in the water more times than not, pulling the tee shot on a short par 3. Well yesterday my 8 iron to the green [after checking my toe line again] was dead in the middle of the green on line with the pin~!

A question for Doc Griffin-ÃÂ First of all, hope you wife is feeling better--haven't heard any report lately and was hoping the news is good.
Generally speaking, for a slower (senior 78-82mph) swing, what shaft characteristics work best in terms of distance and accuracy (flex point, weight, etc.)?ÃÂ Bought a lady Ping 12 deg. driver last year and it has worked out pretty well but was wondering if any shaft you carry might work even better.ÃÂ Thanks, Doc.
