What A Golf Glove Can Tell Us

Sun, 06/12/2011 - 14:14 -- Don Trahan

Dan sent in a question about golf gloves. He'€™s new to the game and wondered if the wear on the glove would tell him if he had a good grip. That started me thinking about what a golf glove can tell us.

In this video I show you three of my gloves. One is really old and pretty dirty. There'€™s slight wear on the heel and thumb. But other than that, there is no wear. Ditto on the second. The third is a new glove and it looks it. All three also show I have a good solid grip.

If your golf glove does show signs of wear, and pretty quickly, then that tells you there is something wrong with your grip. You might be holding the club too lightly or too firmly. The glove will show you if you'€™re holding the club too much in the palm of your hand. It will show if you'€™re letting it turn.

Dan, most golfers do wear gloves. They feel they can grip the club more firmly. That'€™s what I feel. And, yes, it will tell you if you'€™ve got a good grip by showing no wear in any one spot.

Keep it vertical,

The Surge!

Chkjr, I kind of agree with the baggie, but just make sure it is not wet or damp when sealed in. That can and will lead to a moldy musty smelling glove. If it is damp, leave it out in the air to fully dry before even putting it in your golf bag. I learned this years ago from one of my first rain plays where I switched out several wet gloves to new dry gloves which all went into the bag when done. I ended up throwing out several new stinky gloves.

Surge, please help me to understand why you are still on the back porch? Except my apologie in advance as I am so aware of your heart situation. My father passed away much too early because of heart disease. My love of golf wants to see visual demonstration regardless who is demonstrating. Continually watching back porch approach is not helping me!
I think T.J., I know, would help get all this across.

When I used to wear a glove the thumb wearing out was almost always because the thumb was sliding up and down. This usually comes from the wrists collapsing at the top of the swing.

For tears in the heel it was from the club twisting at impact. Most of the time this is due to trying to manipulate the club face onto the ball from being too far into the SBG on the back swing.

I certainly wouldn't object. Not sure if Don was planning to be here for the Justin Timberlake tournament, though. I hope he will be, as I'd love to have a chance to meet him in person and thank him for what he's done for my game, and for giving me the opportunity to "meet" the great folks on this site.

Ya, that same ad can be seen on thier web site. Hey who knows. I tend to grip the club too firm and these grips are really supposed to help anyone with tendenitus, arthritus and other hand issues. They felt surprisingly good when I first tried them out in Cali. The challenge I see so far is finding a golf bag with 14 idividual yet large enough holes to accomodate each club now. I spent an hour up at Golf Galaxy the other night looking at dozens of golf bags. I found two that are top candidates. I think I will wait until my clubs arrive and take them with me to the store and physically try and see which is the winner. I may go to 'Dicks' at Gallaria Mall and 'Sports Authority' to compare also.

TMedley,
I read somewhere that cotton gloves were excellent in wet weather or sweaty conditions. With that in mind a few weeks ago, I saw some cotton gloves with rubber pimples on in Metro [German wholesale store here in Dalian]. They were in packs of ten prs. I bought a pack. To test a pair, I ran the grips under the tap took my Surge grip with a pair on. Absolutely brilliant. There are 9pairs enroute to NZ. I would wear them all the time if necessary.
As a footnote: My Footjoy gloves used to wear badly and quickly on the heel of my left palm. I even had a patch of calloused hard sking on the palm itself. That was before joining the Surge Nation. Now the heel on my left hand is as smooth as the proverbial baby's butt, since changing my grip.
Haven't been online for a while either. Some big brother wombles have been 'interfering' with my access to certain sites, ie, my mail, newspaper, Surge etc. Remember the Scot's two modes? "P*ssed off" and "Let's get the b*st*rds", inappropriate for here, but you will get my drift no doubt?
Good Luck TMedley with the hands and gloves.
Dick Lee, keep on trucking mate, in our thoughts and prayers. The move will go like clockwork, it is so ordained : - ) Keep hitting it long and straight everyone.

Saturday, I played in my traveling league tournament at  Chesley Oaks, the same place I played 11 days prior, and shot an 89, one stroke worse than before. I had one birdie on #12, 150-yard par 3, which I also birdie the previous round; 6 pars; 5 bogeys; 4 doubles; and 2 triples. I hit 4 fairways and 4 GIR. I had 31 putts, of which one was a dreaded 3-putt; 6 were 1-putts, and rest were 2-putts. My average drive was 208, significantly better than previously this year.

Most of my problems related to loss of focus - wandering mind syndrome. It seemed like I would randomly forget everything I know about the Surge Swing. Then, I'd get it back again. I'm gripping down 2 inches on my driver and 1-1/2 inches on the rest of my clubs, and am getting more distance from them. If I can stay focused on what I am suppose to be doing, my game should get better, but .... :-P

I keep letting what other players are doing affect my game. A sub-80 score was out there Saturday, but I did not take advantage of it. I counted 15 mental errors (what are referred to as unforced errors in tennis) that cost me about 11 strokes. I recovered well from the other 4 and didn't lose anything on those.

If I ever get it all together in one round ...

What more demonstration did you need about gloves? He showed closeups, even.

There are lots of visual demonstrations in the actual swing videos, and if you don't have them, you're really wasting your time trying to learn the swing without actually studying the materials. These daily tips are just that, tips and helpful clarifications that enhance our understanding of what is in the actual video lessons and Foundations Manual.

SGW:

I get some wear marks in the heel area of the glove - but for a different reason.  Occasionly, maybe 2 or 3 times a round, my ring and little fingers loosen on the grip about halfway up the FUS, after impact with the ball.  This allows the grip to rotate against the heel pad on the glove, simarly to the "twist at impact" that Surge was talking about, but not as severe.

I carry 2 gloves in my golf bag, on little plastic "hands" that serve as stretchers during the drying process. It seems to lessen wrinkling and cracking of the leather.

Keep hitting them STRAIGHT and LONG

Doc, I was thinking the same thing and have already done my homework. I found that on the Jumbo grip web site they had a way to ask questions. i asked if they had a bag to recommend for with 14 individual dividers that would accomodate the jumbo grips. Sure enough they answered right away. The Datrek Assault bag. So you have a bag you can suggest if they go with those grips.

Dear Verticle swing players. After hitting thousands of balls all winter at the range, with Don's swing thoughts and my note pad, I hit the course in late March full of high hope. My back no longer hurt, even after 2 large buckets (200) each time I practiced. My "range" play looks like a 5 hdcp, but unfortunately I can't control the 5" of space between my ears. Doc, you may have a thought to shorten up that length. My hdcp on my home course after 17 rounds this year has gone up from 8 to 12. Yikes. Seems I can't stop the paralysis by analysis that those 5 inches can do to my new swing. So frustrating since I am healthy in body, but so fragile in my golf mind. Almost ready to resign my club membership. Any thoughts to save a golf nut?

Hello Fellow Surge Swingers,

It's been awhile!  I've been fighting with a cantankerous computer for the past few weeks, thus my absence.  I missed you guys and gals:0)

I've played a few rounds in the past two weeks, and struggled mightily with my iron play.  I couldn't hit them straight to save my life.  The good news is that I think I fixed the problem though and hit them nice and straight today.  I got off of the course at about 11PM after a pretty good  round of golf.  All of the courses in South Central Alaska are now on permanent green, so I'll start recording rounds and dropping my handicap.

Congrats on the life sentence Boog.  My Wife and I are only a year or two behind you.

Hey Steve,

The putting is still holding up.  I had 30 putts today and a chippy for birdie.  I struggled for a few holes yesterday, but left the putter in the bag for three holes and putted with my lob wedge.  My partners thought I was nuts, but my stroke came back, and I didn't have any more problems.

I'm getting a real itch to get to school in August, and can hardly wait to get started.  I'm hoping to hook up with Robert and Robert in Vegas, and maybe with Janet as well, when I get a chance.  I'm anxious to see their new sticks and compare swings with them.

Well, it's time to hit the rack, so I'll say g'nite and blab with all of you again tomorrow.  It's good to be back on board,

Bob

First, get video of yourself on the course. Second, are you tracking not just your scores but individual shots and where they went and possibly a note about what you were trying to do if it was something other than "whack the ball down the middle as far as I can"? I'd hazard a guess that you're probably over swinging on the course, but really all the answers are in your play and in the course videos and manual here. A big part of that is getting control of the 5" between your ears. Maybe you don't need to hit 200 balls every time you go to the range. Maybe what you need to work on is a setup routine that gets you into the swing properly every time you step up to the ball.

I have a notebook with me all the time, and I actually use it LOL. Being the OC person that I am, I have even gone so far as to create my own version of a yardage book. I won't go into all that I did, but I made a map of each hole and laid out my plan of how I wanted to play each one, shot-by-shot. For the most part, I played as I had planned, except when the "senior moments" struck. I tend to lose focus just as I start the BUS - one of those "where am I going" moments - and I don't realize it until starting the FUS. By then, it is too late. All the notebooks, yardage charts, and swing thoughts in the world don't help once the rocket has been lit LOL.

John, normally that means that likely you are not holding the club enough in the fingers rather up to high on that pad. Also it is likely that you are re gripping during your backswing and the club is slipping and rubbing causing excessive wear.Check those things. You'll want to check your grip and grip pressure and make.sure you maintain even pressure throughout the swing.

Here's goes with another thrilling after action report!

For here it was humid day - but nothing liek in the SouthEast !  Some combination of what I ate, the weather, and mayb a little too much water a little too soon produced a mild stomach cramp. Not painful, just a little discomfort "reminder" -- but do read on!

11 of 14 Fairways, 175 yard Driving average.
6 GIR -- about 3 or 4 more than normal for me
6 one putts, no three putts -- for 30 putts total
    4 bunkers with 1 Sandy
    0 penatly shots

ALL of this combined for 1 Birdy, 6 Pars, 9 Bogies and 2 Doubles -- no Triples or "others" today.

     score : 44 +40 = 84 -- my lowest round in a while!

I don't know much about gloves and I don't wear one but a couple of years ago I ordered a few out of an MG Golf catalog just to keep in the bag. Thought I might use one every now and then.
Some of us that normally play together went over to Guntersville to play a round and one of the guys on the first tee was about to panic when he realized he didn't bring his glove so I gave him one of mine. Then after getting it out of the bag and realizing it had been in there for at least a year and I had never used one of them I just gave him all of them.
When I saw him later he asked where I got those gloves. I expected he would say they weren't very good, since I figured at the price they were they probably weren't very good. When I told him he said he was going to start ordering them because he liked them better than the Titlest he had been using.

It's possible he only liked them because they were free to him but who knows? Ha ha!

Terry, I did order it on www.Golfclubs.com last night for 152.00 & free shipping. I saw it personally at Golf Galaxy the other evening and it is ideal for any jumbo gripped clubs. It is otherwise set up really cool with an obvious tilt  on top for short irons up front and longer irons and woods in the back. the two holes for the putter are cool too and allow for easy grab whether your driving or the passenger while riding. It's time T. I've always gone cheaper and 'best deal' but if I can afford it I go first class (and good deal) on equiptment now. I hope it will be my last bag and serve me for years to come. I'll difinately tell you how I love it when I get it. BTW I did order the swingrite too. Hey some people spend money on the car, clothing and reasturants .After I take care of bills and things related to my wife, I spend my hard earned cash on  quality golf stuff. My new clubs haven't arrived yet so it'll be Cristmas for the next week or so with 3 differnt packages coming in the mail...... :)

Your probably right, Steve, kids seem to bounce back from anything. I was kind of catching up on the latest posts and notice the one Robert F & you were trading back & forth on. I see that you mentioned Bridge's Clubs from West Georgia Golf, those are what I've been using since January. Mike has the Titleist I used to play with. He didn't want to give them back & seeing how I knew way back in the early fall I was going to go the custom fit route I didn't push it.
Yeah, I was sporadic with those too, lol. Pre-Surge days and all.
