In 1956 Byron Nelson, called E. Harvie Ward “the best golfer in the world.” Famed golf chronicler Herbert Warren Wind wrote, “Harvie was one of the world’s best strikers of the ball.” His extraordinary mastery of the greens is highlighted in the book, The Match, The Day the Game of Golf Changed Forever by Mark Frost. The book is based on a match that featured Ward and his best friend and fellow amateur, Ken Venturi, where they were pitted against professionals Ben Hogan and Lord Byron himself at The Cypress Point Golf Club.

So why is Harvie Ward virtually unknown to those under the age of 60? Well, for one thing, life tossed Ward a cruel loop that lasted more than a decade, effectively ending his brilliant amateur career.  Eventually, he came back to the game as a teacher. But unlike others of his generation who became famous professional golfers, authors and golf commentators, Harvie chose to keep the essence of his extraordinary skills out of the public eye, preferring instead to teach them to his students one-on-one.

In the early 1970s, PGA Tour players began to seek out Ward’s advice, his “secrets". On one such occasion Jack Moore, then a young amateur, was invited to tag along when Ward revealed his “putting secrets” to a golf legend who was struggling with his putting game. Is it a coincidence that this player went on to win the U.S. Open a few weeks later and then The PGA Championship later that season, ending a three-year winless period ? We think not.

Now a putting coach and a great putter himself, Moore chose to honor Harvie's request to keep what he learned that day to himself until his long-time instructor, PGA Master Professional Don Trahan, convinced Moore it was time to go public so that Harvie might receive some recognition for his contributions to the game. With the blessing of Ward’s wife, Joanne, this video was created, and for the first time, Ward’s putting secrets are being revealed to people like you.
