Fitted Clubs Make All the Difference

Fri, 04/08/2011 - 14:21 -- Don Trahan

There was a comment posted on the blog recently that talked about the importance of having clubs that are right for each individual's swing. This could not be more accurate.

Phil said he found that getting a lower end model off the rack actually matched up to his swing better than a high end golf club. It's all based on each person's abilities when swinging a golf club. Some people have faster clubhead speed while others have a more moderate swing speed. So it is crucial to get fitted for what is best for you.

Make sure that when you go to a certified fitter, he or she is the one that actually makes the clubs for you. Often times, someone will get fitted for clubs but then the measurements get shipped off and you end up getting clubs that were already built. This is not the correct way for a fitter to operate. You should only pay for your clubs after the fitter has built them and taken you to the range, where you can really see if the clubs are right for you.

Keep it vertical,

The Surge!

I am rather dejected tonight. It is a sad time at the Doc's house. As I sit here, the old fart that I am, in my underwear, I now learn that I as well as my fellow old fart underwearing brethern are the problem with this blog. Heck, I didn't even know that we had a problem. I just hate it when I don't get the memoes.

Lynn, It is truly pleasant to see your comments. I am very glad to see you have decided to remain with us. I would love to be able to help you with the site posting problems, but it is so hard to do through long distance. I wish I could set at your computer and actually see what the situation is. I know you have said you are unable to post at the regular blog page, but it is almost impossible to diagnose the cause without being able to examine the patient/PC in question. My best advice, since Tec Support thinks it is at your end, is to reach out to your best family/friend computer wiz. I'm sure you have at least one relative/friend who fits that classification. Fortunately for me it's my son. What I'm getting at is, someone (more skilled) may have to actually set at your PC and examine why you cannot do, what you should be able to do. I do wish you the best and hope that you are able to resolve this problem in some way. Cheers

I assure you that I couldn't care less what color anybody is. Race means absolutely nothing to me. The plain fact is that if you actually teach kids a course in anything other than correct English you are doing them a huge disservice. That would not only apply to Ebonics but many other slang languages including the one that I use. If someone is on a preschool level of literacy it has nothing to do with race. If they were teaching a course on how to talk like I do I certainly wouldn't advise any kid to take it. So I fail to see where race has anything to do with it. If you are a black kid you need to learn proper English and if you are a white kid you need to learn proper English. No difference.
That is all I will have to say about race because it is a non-factor. Idiots don't get a free pass just because they are a different race.

Amen Robert F, mnemonic devices are key to clearing the mind before each shot.
I often have students who get into a good ball striking rhythm for a short time and then lose it a begin to hit all kinds of bad shots. I often get them back on track by having them begin their pre-shot routine by singing Happy Birthday and continuing to sing the song aloud or in their head while hitting shots.

Different core and cover hardness on balls makes for different performance based on the swing speed, launch angle, etc. The slower your swing speed, the softer a ball you need in order to properly compress it for maximum rebound off the club face. For higher swing speeds, you want a harder core so you don't over-compress it and waste energy. Softer covers make for higher spin rates, which can be important for people who have trouble getting the ball airborne or getting it to stop. For players who have better control over their spin rate through impact and higher swing speeds, harder covers can keep them from over-spinning the ball and having it balloon on drives.

And, for more, better information than my BS, read this one from Doc Griffin: http://www.swingsurgeon.com/Ho...

I didn't address everything they do. I know of several other ways to deal with the issue of the eyes introducing errors but Aimpoint does deal with this idea in the Edel putter fitting system that comes with it ... I got an Edel putter but had asked for it in a belly putter format (like Scotty McCarron's). When it came back normal length I tried it but couldn't use it .... they never told me that they didn't make belly putters so they wound up giving me back my money and I gave them back the Edel putter -- I weighted my Taylormade Monza to about what the Edel was.

Anyway ... what they do is place a mirror on your current putter and hit it from a laser behind the hole .. they ask you to line up an 8 foot straight putt. It turns out when about everyone thinks they are lined up on the hole by what their eyes tell them they are actually not -- I was pointed 2 inches right of the hole. So apparently they take into account how to line up the club to take into account your eye induced error.

My putter fitter invented a deal where there are lines on the top of the club that give you a visual feedback when you are exactly on the line. But for some reason his idea could not work for me so my Edel putter didn't have that feature.

>From your explanation of what they have available to help golfers read greens better is a potential great help to a lot of players who never understood how green shapes can mess with their heads.

Between optical illusions, false ideas on how to putt, grain (Aimpoint says it has about zero effect), errors induced by the eyes and wiggly hands intruding on the swing what happens is that a golfer will attribute a false cause to the effect.

The key to being a short game wizard is to link cause (true cause) to effect.

Aimpoint even helps you figure out the true speed of the greens (if all of them have the same speed this works) ... they have you putt on a side hill putt four feet. And you allow x much break ... the have a table on how much it should break given the slope. If it breaks less than what a chart calls for then the speed is slower and if it breaks more then the speed is faster. And they have charts for all speeds. So you wind up using the chart for the day where the break has told you the right speed. They say that the guys at the pro shop are not people to rely on for speed ratings.

>>Increasing the make able distance is the key to scoring. It makes it easier on the short game. It makes it easier on the iron play.

Exactly. But Aimpoint also gets you thinking in terms of math and calculating exact break. During my lesson I started sinking a load of 10 and 15 feet putts as did most of the students.

>That said a green always has the right to reject putts that are struck perfectly.

I use to think that when I missed a perfectly struck putt that maybe there was some sort of irregularity in the green that caused it or that I was a bad putter or putting it too difficult or why does golf have such a small whole etc. Now it is more like what went on in my calculations.

Missing makeable putts clouds the mind whereas using Aimpoint creates the expectation that you can sink a very high % of putts 15 feet and in, never miss short ones and make a fair degree of longer ones. They have a lot of drills too to make a person a better putter but your focus on the role of the eyes you bring up they only address by the Edel putter. You ought to contact them and see if they are open to working with you. Shared thinking process.

" If you consider that "chickened out", well at least you maintain your 100% full of crap rate." to be an excuse. I see all the time you spend here on this forum saying how interested you are in golf yadda yadda yadda and you were offered a free trial of a new technology and you turned it down. Count how many others have chickened out of seeing the real deal and holding one for your own use. JanetM even lives here in San Diego and has talked to me on the phone. No way does she want to have reality upset her opinion. And then guys like T Medley tell her it is wise to avoid seeing proof of what I am saying about this material with her own eyes.

Doc,

I did a search on Google for 47" golf shafts and came across Harrison Sports. The following was a comment from a customer on their website:

"I hit the MUGEN shaft in the Cobra 454 and it went about 30 yards further that my current driver. Cobra 460 SZ NV65S."

Sound familiar? Sounds like it could be the "magic shaft." I have Harrison shafts in my clubs and that was sort of the promise I was given when I got them a couple of years ago. They don't live up to the promise. Of course, I am not really sure I have the right club heads either.

What some of the other comments on Harrison's site refer to and it sort of fits with the claims being made is that Harrison shafts work best with whatever club head is best for the individual. That would explain why the offer is always to match it to your club head. I think it is the club head that matters in getting 30 extra yards, not the "magic shaft."

As a side note: none of the information on Harrison's website has been updated since August 2008.

The clubs in question were purchased on Ebay, when I thought I knew a thing or two about shafts,
I took them to the KZG fitter here in Melbourne to get the lies adjusted for me, he recommend getting them reshafted if I planned to use them regularly,
After reading some recent comments from the blog, It seems its worthwhile to get a new set made rather than retro fitting,

So far it's at least four different airframes that you've claimed to work on in a four year AF career where your "combat" tour was in Thailand. If 72 hour weeks in a country known for its sex tourism industry counts as a combat tour from your perspective ... don't talk to anyone who has served in Afghanistan, Iraq, or as a groundpounder in any conflict. I am greatly disturbed by the inundation of negativity that is prevailing on this website as well. It is my understanding that golf is the gentleman's sport, but lately I have seen very little gentlemanly behavior on this blog. All are to blame really. Whether it's people accusing others of being racist (which as someone who is on this blog reading even if I don't always respond, I can say I have NEVER seen ANYONE make a racist statement), name calling, antagonizing, baiting, and just all around lack of compassion and consideration...it is time to stop. The camaraderie that was so evident and endearing in the beginning is being stifled by all the repetitious attacks on each other filling up the blogs. As I scroll through the blog comments on google reader all I see is a smattering of sincere inquiry and kindness and helpfulness being smothered by the plethora of attacking and negative comments. I beg of all of you - step back, and disengage from turning this great website into a battle ground or mudslinging contest. Please adhere to the ideals on which this site was founded - to bring us together in the name of the love of the Surge swing, the game, and ultimately each other as we endeavor to master it. There is no more room for hate.

As to:
>If you have something that we should buy then tell us where to buy it. If not get the heck off of this web site.

I was willing to drive over to your home in Alabama and place the club in your hand. If Doc wants to sell the shaft after testing it and the maker is OK with that then you can buy one from him. I am not a shaft reseller. I just got a huge boost in distance from this new shaft I got (some call it a "magic shaft" ... I guess they saw Forrest Gump"). Then I reported that fact and added other info like the German guy who speaks no English hit one ball (just one swing) around 360 yards in the air of carry - just above sea level about 58 degrees that day. Let's translate that to Mesquite competition conditions for air temp and altitude and he wins the LDA championship every year since it was created.

As I stated before ... I do not have a clue how to fit anyone on earth including me for a driver shaft .... not the meerest clue. But with no practice swing the German guy becomes longer than the Jamie guy and his swing was 3/4 - not the wild swing requiring a flexible body like the Jamie dude. When he was hitting his new R11 we were both carrying the ball around 290 yards.

Today, when Doc called me at the range, I was carrying the ball about 300 yards ... of course is was warmer today than when the German guy used my club. The fun part for me is to buy a solution that has me carrying the ball like a youth.

Plus I work out focused on golf and not running the marathon.

I also don't know how to take iron ore and aluminum and a lot of other raw materials and create a Jaguar. But I know how to drive my Jaguar.
