Australia Golf Schools Wrap-Up

Tue, 12/24/2013 - 14:00 -- Don Trahan

Doc Griffin provided his recap of our Australia trip a couple of weeks ago, so it inspired me to do the same. Whereas Doc discussed the new year and scheduling some future schools, I'm going to talk about what I saw at each of our golf schools down under.

Of course, I can't leave today without wishing you and your family a wonderful Holiday Season. Enjoy today's video with a nice cup of eggnog!

Keep it vertical!

Greetings fellow Surgites-

Firstly, hope all out there in Surgeland (now worldwide) had a nice Christmas and here's wishing you all a happy and ALIGNED new year. To that cause I offer a simple technique that has help me considerably achieve consistently accurate alignment (it doesn't, however, prevent a BAD SWING--keep watching Don for that problem!): Here goes---1. As ;you stand behind your ball facing your target, take your club of choice and line it up so that it is positioned over the ball and points at your intended target.
2. Holding the club in that position with either hand, shift your body so that your shoulders, chest, hips, knees and feet are parallel to the club. You are now in perfect alignment (even if the procedure looks a tad "different"). Should you have an issue with the club moving slightly as you get into address position you can pick out some spot that lies under the club between the ball and the target line.

I know this might seem or look strange--but badda bing badda bang---it really works! No charge.
With best wishes to all,
Ray Gawlak

Ray,
Best of Holiday greetings to you too. Nice to hear from you it's been a while.
Sounds like that alignment idea is working for you. Cool.
I have a similar method that is really fool proof. (Did I just call myself a fool?)
Anyway, this is a method that Surge actually gave me several years ago at a golf school when we played 9 holes. After your find your target line lay the club down on that line next to the ball (club now on the ground), then stand parallel to the shaft and set feet. Pick the club up and without shuffling those feet align knees, hips and shoulders and then swing away. As long as we don't look at the target and shuffle out of it it works great. I know that Surge says to check our alignment after by laying the club down but he had also said that laying it down BEFORE swinging to be sure before hand that it's correct assures great alignment. Perhaps because no one else does this in your foursome and golfers don't want to appear different they won't take this advice but frankly it's within the rules and I don't care who's watching or not.
As long as we don't keep a stick or club by our feet during the swing it's allowed and a super way to do it.

Hi Robbie--Looks like we're in the same neighborhood with a choice of houses to drop in on. I'll try yours if you'll try mine.lol

Right now it's moot point since the temps are in the teens and twenties. Did get to sneak a round in Saturday with some buds as it stayed around 46 deg. with no wind and occasional appearances of old Sol. We golf desperadoes saddle up at any and every opportunity during our New England winter. Last year was a bust with heavy snowfalls so now it's finger-crossing time for January -March. Anyway, thanks for the note and let the "bump" times roll.
Regards,
Ray
