Today we have another great video from our Director of Club Fitting Operations, J. Lynn "Doc" Griffin. In this installment of The Doctor's House Call, Lynn discusses the differences in the quality of the components brand name manufacturers use versus the ones that good club fitters like Doc use. There are some differences but maybe not where you would think.
The reality is that, in today's global market, there are only 5-6 high-end golf club component manufacturing plants in the world. Every brand name equipment company and every high-end custom component company uses these same foundries. They all specify high grade steel and titanium when they enter into a manufacturing agreement with these plants.
The real difference is not in the components themselves but in the way these parts are chosen and assembled. The OEMs build to a common set of standards which fit profiles for the "average" male and female golfer for each of their lines. The end result is a high quality club made for for a mass audience. That's OK if your swing exactly matches one of these profiles, but what if it doesn't?
The custom fitter, on the other hand, assembles comparable quality components for an audience of one--the client. A good fitter will match each component for each club to the exact swing characteristics of that individual customer and will fine tune his/her work until the optimum result is achieved.
So if you are going to buy a new driver, let's say, do you think you would be better off spending $250-$300 for a name-brand club or a similar amount for a custom-fit, custom-built driver from your local certified club fitter? In my book, that choice is a no-brainer!
Keep it vertical!
