I'm going to stay on the "power and distance" subject because we've been getting some great responses on the blog from people who had suggestions about the swing that could help me and, of course, you. One that really impressed me was about solid contact. There's nothing quite like solid contact!
With any swing, with any club, solid contact is key. Remember what I say about the four things you must do correctly to hit the ball properly. The club has to approach the ball on the aiming line, strike it on the line and be square, leave on the line accelerating and hit it solidly on the sweet spot. "On, on and on, square & solid" is the Surgism to help you remember. For every club in the bag. When talking about distance, Solid is the most important factor. That's where the club's power is.
You can actually hear a good solid shot. Gary wrote in that he knew he hit a good drive by the sound coming off the face. That's exactly right. That's the kind of feedback you want when you practice. Use all your senses and you'll shorten your learning curve.
Another comment Gary made was about the bump and how that led him to more power. That slight turn, when we shift our weight from back to front leg, was key to Gary's success. I had a student once who was about my height but his upper body strength was very impressive. However, I always hit my drives longer. I watched him closely. His lower body turned a good five inches when he shifted or 'bumped.' That's where he lost power. That turn should be no more than an inch. Once my student made the adjustment, I never out drove him again.
Power in your swing comes from on, on and on, square & solid hits and that quiet, lower body. Thanks for all your commentskeep 'em coming!
