It doesn't happen that often, but with the larger headed drivers it definitely can. To keep the overall weight of the driver within limits, the face of the large head is thinner and, in some cases, weaker.
Even a small crack can have disastrous results. It happens more often on Tour, but as one of my students proved — his swing speed is about 90 MPH — it can happen to anyone.
So when you think you're making good swings and your flight path looks like you hit a Wiffle Ball, check the clubhead. You may have a crack.
