Causes of Shoulders Moving First in Downswing

Fri, 02/28/2014 - 14:00 -- Don Trahan

If you've never heard of "the bump", it's what initiates the downswing. It's a slight movement with your hips toward the target that allows your arms to fall freely from the vertical position. Some Surgites have had trouble with the concept of the bump over the years, so I thought I would spend today discussing the proper sequential movements of the body as it relates to the Peak Performance Golf Swing.

Don McRee is one Surgite who has seen steady improvement over a course of 4 years using the PPGS. As is the case with so many golfers who switch to the 3/4 limited turn, vertical swing, he's enjoying the game like never before!

Surge,

Robert’s question and your answers on the “Bump and the Slot” were immensely helpful.  I have been using the PPS for more than 4 years with great satisfaction.  However, as with Robert, I occasionally have trouble because of initiating with the shoulders on the down-swing.  Your explanation and demonstration really got it fixed correctly in my mind.  A million thanks.

If you're ever faced with a situation where your shoulders are reacting before you bump, you may need to get back to basics and remember your timing. Your timing is the proper sequential movements of the body and your tempo is the speed of your swing. You have to remain balanced throuhgout your swing. Sometimes when golfers want to get a little extra on a drive or long iron shot, their fundamentals break down and, as a result, they hit errant shots.

Remember the rules and parameters of the PPGS. If at the end of the day you still hit a bad shot, remember rule #5...forget about it and do the next swing right!

Keep it vertical!

Mr. McRee, Glad that bump and slot discussion helped you out. Learning that move through experimentation and determination was something that had me hitting some of my longest drives that had a beautiful draw too. I'd like to say I'm having the same success now but because of some lower back challenges I have not hit it as far or consistently as of late. I still know I made some key breakthroughs though last summer and fall and as my body allows I will be back to practicing those moves soon.
Surge did just barely touch on a great subject today. I think that why we start with the shoulders instead of the lower body is certainly likely a combination of reasons aside from alignment. Mis-alignment, not only of the feet but of the upper body and shoulders set too open at address can pre-set us for out to in and across for sure. So having that rear shoulder back and square in the set up and starting the sequential movements of the FUS with the hips and bump are the difference between pros and non pros. On our golf journey learning to loop under and start with the bump is a worthy goal.

Hers's that daily for those that didn't see it or want to review it.

If Alignment is the Zip Code of Golf are the postmen the Bump - responsible for delivery of the motion. As with the Bump the postman starts the motion with the pick up of the post.
