Center of Gravity, Center of Swing

Mon, 05/16/2011 - 20:41 -- Don Trahan

In the Surge Swing, there are two '€œcenters'€ to consider: the center of gravity of your body and the center of your swing. You'€™ll find them at the bottom of your spine and the top of your spine.

Keeping them still and balanced is key to a successful swing. There has been a little confusion out there about our '€œcenters.'€ The center of gravity of the body, as I indicated, is at the bottom of the spine. Think of it as your anchor. It doesn'€™t move.

Then there is the center of the swing, the top of the spine. This is where you focus your shoulder turn, you understand your (wagon wheel) plane. Check out the video. This is THE ANSWER to the '€œcenter.'€

Keep it vertical,

The Surge!

Robert is exactly right. You would be better served by forgetting about the pane of glass, at least as extending from the ball. With a rotational swing the club face can travel almost the full length of the back swing pressed right up against the glass.
With a vertical swing the club head has to get over to the toe line first. Then it would be able to do what feels the same with Robert's hypothetical vertical pane of glass on the toe line. Even then that imaginary pane of glass on the toe line would have to move a little as if the base of it was able to move away from the toe line because a little more of turning the shoulders takes place during the final lift of the arms.
Think of straightening your left arm and extending it behind you on the toe line with the palm perpendicular to the ground. (palm pressing against the vertical pane of glass). From there lift straight up the pane and let it come straight back down the pane until upon approaching the ball from the inside it squares up through the hitting area. Palms perpendicular to the ground throughout the swing.
Anyone (and there are plenty) trying to take that club head to the top of the back swing from its position at address in a straight line are in for a long road.

I carry this everywhere with me. It is a photocopy of when I wrote it in Italics for a friend.

I don't think it is off topic for all of us who suffer and strive to be the best we can be.

                      Don't Quit
When things go wrong as they sometimes will
When the road you are trudging seems all uphill
When the funds are low and the debts are high
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh.
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must, but don't you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As everyone of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don't give up though the pace seems slow,
You may succeed with another blow.
Success is failure turned inside out -
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far;
So stick to the fight when you are hardest hit -
It's when things seem worst that you
MUST NOT QUIT

Perhaps this is a fitting item for us all to aspire too?
God Bless you all.

EDIT: forgot yo post the score! LOL

42 + 45 = 87 --- just the reverse of my "normal" game -- 45 + 42 would have more likely. I don't liek the "couldna, shoulda, woulda" games -- but without the mental breakdwon on 17, it "woulda" been 42+42 - with my normal Bogie on that hole.

This is just left overs from an incident that should have sent me to be with our Lord 20 years ago.  I guess that is why I have the attitude I have about life.  I know every day I have been around since then is a gift.  The fact that I am still around to be with the kids, grandkids, you folks, and play golf is a freebie.

It is all good.

Great lesson, but how do you reconcile this "center does not move" with the secondary axis Surge mentions that occurs during the bump/left lateral shift? It seems that will cause your center/spine to shift somewhat?

Nice job pal.

I hate it most of the time when I hit a tree.  But, there is the other side of the coin.  During my round yesterday, I hit a long drive that turned into a hard slice at about the 200 yard mark.  I saw it go into the tree line at about 35' high.  I just knew it was gone.  I went ahead and hit a provisional shot.  When I got up there, the 1st ball was lying about 10' out into the fairway at the 230 mark.

I will take that.  Just goes to prove that sometimes golf is not a game of where we hit the ball, but, a game of where the ball stops rolling.
