Club Position at Address

Sat, 05/07/2011 - 19:42 -- Don Trahan

Our Director of Club Fitting, Doc Griffin, makes a house call to discuss some questions regarding the best position for the club at address.

As Doc explains, a club is designed so that the sole lays flat on the ground. If you want to "toe-up" the club, you physically have to move your arms in a position to where the club points up. This is not a good way to address the ball and will certainly cause problems.

I really like Doc's advice on this subject and appreciate the time he took to discuss some key elements in a proper setup. We would also like to wish him and his family well.

Keep it vertical,

The Surge!

When you removed an inch from your driver, did you add weight back to compensate for what you took away? Also, forgetting what the contact looks like on the face for a second, is there an issue with your ball flight that you are trying to correct by doing this?

Yeah, T, you have to have confidence in your clubs and like you say, your clubs have to be pleasing to the eye to help give you that confidence and that's part of the mental game.

Doc said it in another reply, the toe goes up as the length of the shaft increases.
This applies to regular golfers as well as long drive guys. Big difference is that long drive guys get much more toe droop.

Congratulations on the new clubs. Sounds like you'll be happy with them for years to come. Enjoy. Remember too, the ball and golf course don't know weather you're hitting a "ladies" shaft, ball or whatever. Golf tools shouldn't be thought of in terms of womens, mens or seniors anyway in my oipinion. They are simply the right or wrong tools for you regardless of age size or gender. If they work for you and bring the joy this great game can provide that's all that matters!

I;ve had my Swingrite about a month, and I do like it!

This is the difference between men and women (generalization here): I don't even know what clubhead John is getting for me! I do know the demo clubshaft is a senior flex with a high trajectory. I looked at the name but couldn't tell you now what it was. John finally got my hybrid clubhead today and will put everything together and ship Thursday or Friday.
Can't wait! But I don't even know what these puppies are gonna look like. I'm like the lefty; there's fewer choices for women; probably why your fitting took twice as long as mine. Glad to hear you've got yours on order.

Also, you might want to keep in mind that John probably reads this blog.

And now some words on the "mental" side of golf and keeping notes.

If you keep a log, the FIRST thing that you should ask yourself is "What went well today?"
If you keep stats (drives, fairways, ups and downs, putts, 1 putts, etc., there's almost always SOMETHING that was okay or good. This helps you remember the positives of your game.
The next question: What could be better? Pick ONE thing.
The third question: How will I improve on that? Write it down, and then DO it.
This gives a reason and a focus for your practice sessions.
And last, I list my BEST shots of the day; Describe them as fully and positively as you can. Review these often!

I played my best golf two years ago when I was doing this consistently. I got lazy last year, and didn't. And yes, I'm going to do it again this year. Look out 70's!

Any chance you can let us have Don's swing video in slow motion. I appreciate that we have DJs in slow motion but I would love to have a slowder version of Don's. Fingers crossed!

What we need with him is a big box of kitty litter.

No matter how much crap gets dumped in the box, it always smells fresh as a daisy.

I think that is the same point Steve was making this morning with his post. I guess I should go back and unlike it, so he don't think I am rooting for his failure.

Glad you liked the bit about Johnny Cash. I just made that up and put it in there to keep the blog police at bay. Steve and I have started always putting something about golf at the end of our posts. I guess we are just a couple of country SAs.

Exciting T. Fun having new sticks. I've read lots of Wishons books lately. He has many great 'firsts' in club design and has alot of influence on custon club fitters.I just took a look at the 730 CL's, beautiful Terry. I play Maltby's KE4's (till now). Maltby along with Wishon have done alot for club design and technology along with being a powerful force behind custom club fitting. All golfers do themselves a great service by reading Wishon's books, "the perfect golf club" and "the perfect driver". Very educational and eye opening. All very suppportive of Don and Luynn's
beliefs on often shorter, more loft and more flex being the answer to better golf for most of us. I go for my fitting on June 1st finally. Can't wait. Let me know how your new sticks turn out:)

Blessing and healing prayers to you and your wife. I am happy to hear of her progress.

My irons are 2 degree flat and I wish I could get driver that was flat as well as my 3W and Hybrids flat. I gave up on hybrids and carry a Bang 5 and 7 wood that are about 1" short. I can really go after the thae ball with the shorter steel shafts. My driver is 43.75" and 3wd is 42.25". I lead taped up to get a swing weight feel. That helps a bunch. I use a TEE 3 wd and it is long even at 42.25". I had cut 3/4" off the TEE. All my irons are 1/2" short. I used a Ping Ti3 (flat position) for many years for this reason but the TEE outperforms the Ping in every way.

It's an automatic unconscious response (like continuously standing on two feet - especially when intoxicated) for which it is sometimes referred to as the "balance buddy". The miniscule effect on the body during the swing probably goes some way to explain why a statically soled club can also strike the ball dynamically soled. (hmm, I think I can hear those damn chirping Crickets again!)

Robert F. The answer to your first question is no, but its hard to wrap my head around adding back that small amount of weight could make that much difference. If its that important I'll add it back. The second question gave me a chuckle. Yes I trying to get more usable drives from the tee box. Since cutting the shaft down I'm in the fairway more often now, and that was with as much left as right bad shots.

Dan, That's kind of my philosophy too. This will probably, hopefully, be my last set, so I figured that cost was secondary (within limits) to quality. I'm also seriously thinking of buying the Swing trainer device. Those who have purchased one, please give me some review feedback.

Hi Doc:

Happy to hear your wife is continuing on the road to recovery. We shall keep her in our prayers. For some reason I have been unable to get the videos by e mail since Feburary 17th and until this day I do not get them unless I go to the website. I was told the last time that the software had to be changed and the technicians were doing this and it would be up soon. However, this has been several weeks. Is there someone who can help those of us that cannot get access?

 Address Position
As the last video says the clubhead should be flat on the ground, (not toe up) which I agree. Then I take my driver and place on the ground center to the ball. With the higher tees that are out today, if I lift the club, lifting the clubhead, then I'm in the heel of the club. Shouldn't we address the ball (clubhead on the ground) on the toe, putting in into the middle when we swing the club? Then hitting the ball in the middle of the clubface.

G'night Folks, the proverbial ox is in the ditch for the next few weeks and since we accidentally got locked out of the Training Center by the Cleaning man this morning for a couple of hours, it will be a long one tomorrow.

I will, however, be following DJ on shot-tracker as breaks allow.

Coach

I feel like I have been shafted so many times, I should be just about able to have a whole bag full. Like you, I don't recall all the people who made those shafts. But, the one thing I do remember is that those shafts were definitely stiff. Well, that and I know a lot of them were longer than 43.5".

But, enough golf talk from me for one night.

Thanks Kevin. I appreciate the help and you taking the time out to respond. I will go back and review Surges videos. I did have a "professional" fitting and Surge did a daily on one of my questions because my grips werent put on all that straight from one of the major chain stores I won't mention the name (think male anatomy).
It just seems that there is a big gap between my irons of like 12 - 15 Yds (5i - PW) and between the other clubs moreso my 5i, 4 n 3 hybrids (solid 15 Yds) and especially between 3 hybrid n 3 wood (almost 20 Yds). That's why I feel the need to swing more aggressively . Thanks again n be well.

Here are some basic guide lines that were posted by Doc a while back in regards to shortening a driver and adding head weight.
. Each 1/2" is equal to 3 swing weights. Each swing weight is equal to about 2gr. So, 1/2" is approximately 6gr.
