Hitting Your Driver

Sat, 04/02/2011 - 18:26 -- Don Trahan

We're still down in Orlando and today I decided to give a demonstration on how to hit your driver. With different weather conditions, it's important to know how to create different launch angles.

Sometimes it can be very windy on the golf course, so hitting it low and underneath the wind can make all the difference. Other times you may need to get the ball up. With just a couple of adjustments, you'll be able to hit the ball wherever you want.

I hit some pretty good drives today, and I even felt like Arnold Palmer at one point.

Keep it vertical,

The Surge!

I wish I would have watched this video before I played yesterday. I popped up probably 3/4 of my drives. I was consciously preloading heavy right, a lot more than normal. I had no idea that would make me hit a rainbow. I thought maybe it was ball position so I played it a little further back, and it helped a little but not much.

You know, sometimes it seems like there's just way too much to think about. You get to a point where you're hitting the ball pretty good and you think you FINALLY get it, then you unknowingly develop some little glitch that screws everything up. On the other hand, I'm kind of a head case, so it could just be me.

Don, Mine is working fine. Check you internal system settings. Others have mentioned in the past, that they will drift down on their own sometimes. Good luck.

Bud:

As to: " unique to him and not to others then let Surge or other PPGS instructors"

I got the idea of tilting 10% into the SBG from Derek Hardy, and old dear friend of Surge ... so this idea comes from the likeliest oldest PPGS approved instructor of them all. Derek knows golf. Both Surge and Derek are after the same thing but Derek showed me how to modify my swing to get up to 70 degrees of turn. When I went vertical at the toe line I was only turning 59 degrees .... I was measured by the people at Body Balance.

DJ can turn a lot more than I can. When I make bad shots 90% of the time it is because I didn't finish my swing and then get my weight solidly on my left side. The key for me that with this little bit of tilt Derek gave me as a tip I no longer feel like my swing is on one plane to the toe line and then jumps straight up from there ... others have stated the same issue. The key for me is that I can stay inside this way and not come over the top if I finish my turn and I am not getting back pain following Derek's idea.

I also just purchased Eric Jones 5 keys to distance. Eric is an LDA champion. http://www.givemeareview.com/G....
I lost a lot of yards coming over to the vertical swing - others report the same issue. Eric does not tell you how to swing the club - his idea is to use his keys to get more distance out of any swing you use.

So Eric's ideas can be merged into the vertical swing - zero conflict. Surge tells us how to swing and Eric's deal is to get lots more distance. I am just starting Eric's book and so far it makes sense and not in conflict with Surge.
He was the 2003 Re/Max World Long Drive Senior Champion, and I think he won the open championship that year too.

I appreciated your comments to T.

In that video he does a similar demonstation but focuses even more on simple keys of set up. Liston clsely to the last 30 seconds of that video.

Having a degree in psychology and done 3 internships in mental health, as well as working with plenty of patients with dementia and brain injury I know all about this. And while I didn't follow on the old site, I have seen PLENTY on this site to concur with you and know this to be true. Thankfully there's no spotlight to steal b/c WE ARE HERE FOR DON TRAHAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's just entirely disrespectful (and annoying) to come here and undermine the teacher!!!!!! I was wicked ticked off when he was going after Doc, who is a decorated and credentialed fitter, and not some Sunday afternoon fitter. But now he's going after the whole reason this site was created, which was to promote the teachings of DON TRAHAN AND THE SURGE SWING!!!!! A swing that has more than 30 years of research behind it and has been taught with tremendous success by a PGA MASTER GOLF PROFESSIONAL AND ONE OF THE TOP 100 TEACHERS IN AMERICA for over 30 years.

Amen brother, that is right from the good book.

I learned a long time ago as a public safety manager that I did not need to know the answer to every possible question. What made me darn good at what I did was my ability to put great people in the right positions and then let them do their jobs.

Your are a wise man, my friend.

Surge

I loved it, especially the reference to looking like Arnie...lol. Before learing the Surge Swing that was what my finish looked like with all my tee shots. It's very likely the reason I have always tended to hit my drives low. That and and a tendency to lose spine angle on the FUS. Thanks for the reminder on 2 points that I know need work.

Is it only videos here that you're having problems with? Have you tried watching videos directly on YouTube (Surge's or others)? Are you getting sound in other programs properly? Heck I know I've muted my computer so I could talk on the phone, and then couldn't figure out why I wasn't hearing the video when I came to watch. ;-)

Thanks for posting this video. It allowed me to examine my spine angle when I address the ball. I took the information from this video to the range and it opened my mind to how important my spine angle is when hitting the ball. Most of you may say, "duh," but I have little epiphanies like this with almost every Surge video I watch. Again, thanks. It allowed me to better understand my swing, posture and ball flight.

BTW, I started playing golf again last year and have been studying and practicing Don's swing for only 6 months. When I started playing last year I shot anywhere from 110-115, this past weekend I broke 90 for the first time in my life; I shot 89! Do the math, 21 strokes shaved that I owe to Don and I continue to get better and hit the ball straighter and longer. I love this game!

The guys in my group comment how consistent my swing is and how straight my ball flies. Just as an aside, I play with a guy who rips his drives and plays a pretty big slice. I told him last week that his drives looked so much more impressive than mine, but we hit it the same distance! hehe.

Point well taken. It works for the draw and does help with an over the top move which I fight
.I'm concentrating more on just a little more flare with the right foot as it seems to free my arms up for better extension through the ball and help me stay on plane.

Amos I've been doing putting ONLY practice for 4 days staight. I am going to follow your "one putt wonder" example!
I have been gradually using all of Surges putting drills. I wonder if anyone is or has used and practiced religiously those drills. I get a lot of stares and looks on the practice greens. "what is that you are doing?" they iether say or quietly inquire. I have string and small wire flags and a half hula hoop and the works. It has all been helping. More putts are gunna drop this spring!

Doc and everyone, there's absolutely no point in responding to him. I truly believe he's getting off on everyone ranting and raving at him. It's obvious that he doesn't care if everyone here is making fun of him and wants him to go away. He posts all of his garbage about Surge and his swing and talking about ball spin, etc., etc., etc, like he's totally oblivious to what everyone is saying about him. I don't know if he's certifiably nuts or just getting his jollies by getting everyone in an uproar. I think everyone needs to just ignore him. If he doesn't get any reaction, he'll go away. Let him post all of his derogatory stuff, and if someone makes a single comment that he's wrong with no argument, he'll eventually stop. I know how infuriating he is (having been his victim also), but he's just feeding off all of this anger.

I'm someone who is boring and hits the ball fairly straight all the time with some height but there is something Surge said that reminded me of the past. I was a kicker when I played football and loved windy days because I had to make certain adjustments. I still use these adjustments as a gauge when i hit golf shots making adjustments for the wind and placing the ball in the air and letting the elements take over. I may have somewhat of an advantage but when I started playing golf seriously about 5 years ago (18 handicap) I couldn't help but to see the same correlation. I looked at my target, closed my eyes for a second and saw the shape of the shot in my mind's eye, gauged the wind, decided how high and what line to start it on and let it go. I always determined my height by the way and where I planted my left foot which changed the angle of my body (spine angle) Now that was 35 years ago but for me I still get the same "feelings" when I try this with my golf swing. A slight tilt of my torso seems to determine the height of my shot. Is this similar to what the Surge is saying or is this something in my own head?

TO JIM FROM OK;
Thanks for your comments on the MP52's Mizuno's. Pw-4iron huh?. Sounds good. I'm more likely to go 5 iron through pw. Not sure on who's wedges to play yet to play yet. Probably lookin at 3 hybrids, driver, 4 and 5 woods, 4 wedges and staying with same putter. The only draw back with mizuno is I'll have to start with thier shafts which I understand are good. Might go with another iron so I can get UST v2 graphite for irons.

Wow - you had bilateral hand surgery for trigger finger and they didn't fit you with hand splints?! I'm totally shocked. Really. Glad you had one you could use, and are getting another. It needs to go all the way to your fingertips to keep them in an extended position, or at least neutral. But if it ends in the palm of your hand, all your little fingers are going to do during the night is curl up into a flexed position. I hope you get all your strength back too. My mom had bilateral carpal tunnel surgery years ago, and she didn't regain her full strength.

It wasn't so much a case of a woman scorned. More like a daughter outraged and coming to the defense of her daddy. Though despite my anger I do think I made a valid point about this being Surge's site. He is the one that has paid for it's development and all, it is his years of experience accumulating into this body of teaching style, and it his baby as such. I was bolstered into defending Surge, which I will do to the hilt to anyone else who is contrary. Except that person. Never again. He doesn't exist in my world any more. Thanks for the pep talk bro!

I too find it much easier to flare my right foot a bit more to make the weight transfer easier for both the backswing and FUS. I also have tried dropping my back foot out slightly which seems to give me power and allows me to feel I'm getting more power on the downswing. I have to be careful with doing that though as it will cause alignment problems.

Guys like him never build anything, or even do anything. They have to be on the outside tearing down what someone else is doing. They are experts at everything and still never do anything.

It goes back to the old saying that those who have never done anything wrong have never done anything.

He ain't worth 10 seconds of your, or anyone on this blog, time to read his babble. I don't know what he wrote, cause I don't read his novels any more.

Do yourself a favor and stop wasting your time reading and responding to his trash. It ain't worth the high blood pressure. You know from your education, training, and experience that you will never make him see the light. You are just burning up your energy. That is playing his game. Put your paddle down and just walk away.

There is one thing positive that could come out of his crap. When I go to the other kind of range I go to often, I think I will draw his little profile in the 10X ring. That should help me stay focused on the bullseye. You could also imagine his face on the back side of your golf ball and try to hit it really really really hard. On second thought on that last idea, none of us want to spend 4 hours having him with us on a round.

I knew you had a fighting side to you. Be strong.

The big difference is that God does not need a "Like" or "Hate" button. He has lightning bolts. We would know right away if he did not like someone's post.

Maybe the tech guys could come up with a "Shock" button. if someone got enough votes from us, when they hit the "Post as..." button it would just shock the snot out of them. Probably wouldn't work, cause some people would like the shock.

Are you serious? You've got a guy that used to answer ads on Craig's list from women looking for golf partners telling them he didn't actually play the game but loved to hang out at a driving range to help people who did trying to tell a decorated teaching professional and excellent player and ball striker what he should or shouldn't do to hit certain shots? That's about as smart as a person that flies remote control airplanes trying to tell a pilot how to properly fly a plane! I don't think so. The inmates have taken over the asylum yet again!!!!

Thank for the opportunity to add what I feel is positive words of encouragement

1. dgaines, each person has his or her own way of dealing with situations. If you don't like moving around at the set up position then don't, but each person has his or her own way. Yes, I do like it best when Surge and others instruct on the golf course and others when he is on the back porch, both have pluses and minus'. Please try and concentrate on what is being presented NOT on the background setting, then you will get more out of the videos; yes I know it is sometimes distracting but as with golfing you have to learn to concentrate in your own way on what you are about to learn or do.

2. As for what WK is saying, sometimes we do things in a way that results in bad golfing and if WK is doing it in a way that is unique to him and not to others then let Surge or other PPGS instructors let us know if that is recommended or not. Then maybe WK will see a better way. As I see it, WK's is more of a "question" than an instruction. We all sometimes feel that we are doing it the right way for us and as Surge says you have to develop your own swing. Surge is only trying to lead people in what he feels is the right direction as he has learned in his long years of successful golfing. Surge is lucky to have a talented son to help Surge develop better golfing instruction for you and others.

3. It seems that T Medley is ranting about things that are not about learning golfing. Please take a deep breath, sit back, and try to think positive, and only post things that are relevant to golf. As Surge says "Stay positive" which makes golfing more enjoyable

Thanks, we all can use all the help we and even Pros can get. Pros never stop learning and so should you if want to be more successful.

Surge, I've always been somewhat of a low-ball hitter, so today I tried your tips on hitting the driver higher at the range, and wow! What a difference it made. I just flexed my right knee a little more and pre-loaded a lot more weight onto the right side at address, causing my shoulders to tilt more as well. Quite a bit higher launch was the result.

On another note, I've been working with a buddy on the Swing Surgeon swing, and try as I might, I can't get him to lift straight up the tree. Invariably, he starts lifting, but by the top of the backswing, his left arm always seem to angle back rather than staying over the toeline, causing him to get laid-off with his hands over his heels. I've tried putting a stick on his toeline and getting him to cover it up with his left arm so that he can't see it, but that doesn't seem to work for him.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get him to lift straight up and keep his hands and left arm over the toeline?
