I'm seeing more and more hybrids on the Tour. It makes sense. They're easier to hit and they get the ball into the air. But amateurs tend to think of them the same as irons in terms of choosing one for their bag. I asked our Director of Club Fitting, Lynn Griffin, to make a video on tips for buying a hybrid.
In this video, Lynn shows you the difference between a 3 iron blade and a #3 hybrid. They aren't the same in many respects, loft being the most important factor. The loft of a 3 iron is usually about 23 degrees. But the loft of a #3 hybrid is 18 to 20 degrees. The head is lighter and the shaft is longer by about an inch and a half.
Lynn says that a good rule of thumb when you purchase a hybrid to replace an iron is to go up a club. For a 3 iron, that would be a #5 hybrid.
If your clubhead speed is slowing down a bit, a hybrid could be the answer.
