How To Choose A Hybrid

Sun, 03/06/2011 - 18:09 -- Don Trahan

I'€™m seeing more and more hybrids on the Tour. It makes sense. They'€™re easier to hit and they get the ball into the air. But amateurs tend to think of them the same as irons in terms of choosing one for their bag. I asked our Director of Club Fitting, Lynn Griffin, to make a video on tips for buying a hybrid.

In this video, Lynn shows you the difference between a 3 iron blade and a #3 hybrid. They aren'€™t the same in many respects, loft being the most important factor. The loft of a 3 iron is usually about 23 degrees. But the loft of a #3 hybrid is 18 to 20 degrees. The head is lighter and the shaft is longer by about an inch and a half.

Lynn says that a good rule of thumb when you purchase a hybrid to replace an iron is to go up a club. For a 3 iron, that would be a #5 hybrid.

If your clubhead speed is slowing down a bit, a hybrid could be the answer.

Nike VR full cav graphite 3 iron 21*, 39.25" long, SQ Machspeed 3 hybrid is 21*, 40" long (+.75")
Nike VR full cav graphite 4 iron 24*, 38.75" long, SQ Machspeed 4 hybrid is 24*, 39.5 long (+.75")
5 " 27*, 38.25" " 5 " is 27*, 39" " +.75")
6 " 30*, 37.75" " 6 " is 30*, 38.5 " (+.75")
For Nike the above generalization of degrees and length don"t wash -- research what you buy
