News flash from the Arnold Palmer Invitational. DJ's grip change greatly improves his performance.
There's a new scoring challenge out on the PGA Tour. I got a hint of it on the putting green last Tuesday when I was out there with DJ and he started talking with Nick Watney and his caddy about shooting some really high numbers. This scoring challenge is the opposite of golf where they try to go low. On this one they try to go high.
I remember DJ saying he was only shooting about 21,000 on this one. He was absolutely amazed that he had heard Luke Donald had scored something like 81,000. Watney said he was doing O.K. but still not much higher than DJ.
I just let it slip my mind and didn't think anything about it until Sunday when we were having breakfast. We were discussing how his back was and I was very happy to hear he was feeling pretty good.
When we were done eating DJ just sat back in his chair and picked up his iPhone and started moving around with his fingers on the screen like was going to make a phone call.
All of a sudden I hear all these crazy noises coming out of his phone and shooting, kind of like you hear on Pack Man.
Sitting right behind DJ was Tim Clark, sort of like back to back at the table on the side of us. When he started hearing the noises, he kind of leaned over and started talking to DJ about it.
They're playing a new game called “Doddle Jump.” DJ said again that the best he's done is 21,000. He said he heard that Luke Donald shot an 82,000. He said he couldn't believe that could happen. Tim leaned over and said, “Yeah, I got 89,000 last night.”
DJ said, “No way! How'd you do that?”
Tim said, “You just have to be quick with your fingers. He leaned over and looked at DJ and said, “No wonder you're not doing any good. You've got the wrong grip. You're holding it with one hand and you're shooting with your index finger on your other hand. That's no good. When you're doing it that way you're hiding part of the screen.”
So with all of that, I just decided to bring you up to date on this. So I went and Googled Doodle Jump.
It said, “Doodle Jump is a action game developed and published by Lima Sky for iPhone OS and Android. It was released worldwide for iPhone OS on April 6, 2009, and as of now it's had over 3 million sales.
“Gameplay consists of guiding a four-legged creature known as the “Doodler” up an unending series of platforms without falling in an attempt to gain a high score. The character is controlled by tilting the gaming device in the desired direction. Players can get a short boost from various objects, such as propeller hats, rockets, springs or trampolines. There are also monsters that the Doodler has to shoot or jump on to eliminate. You can aim your shot by tapping on different parts of the screen, sending a laser in the direction of your finger. There is no definitive end to the game, but the end for each gameplay happens when you fall, jump into a monster, get sucked into a black hole, or abducted by a UFO.”
What Tim did was he took the iPhone from DJ and he said, “You can't do it one-handed and tap with your index like did because your finger and part of your hand hides too much of the screen. You have to cradle it in your hand, sort of like you're in good hands with Allstate, and tap the bottom of the screen to shoot. You tap with your thumbs. That way you can see the whole screen all the time and you can actually move the phone around as you need to move the Doodler.”
He was really firing off. While Tim was doing that, DJ also mentioned that he figured out that you needed to keep the audio on because the bad guys make certain noises to give you a clue they're coming so you can be prepared for them.
It's pretty wild. I guess it's a great way to release tension and relax and give yourself a challenge of your eye-hand coordination and your quickness. The only irony we could say about this stuff is, just like golf, having a better grip helps you improve your performance.
So with that, I'll close and say, if you've been told your golf grip isn't that good, you might want to think about changing it. Having a better grip, no matter what you do, whether you're Doodling or playing golf, it's going to help you improve your performance.
That's it for today. Tomorrow, after this light-hearted update about what's going on in the background of the PGA Tour, we'll be back on some solid golf instruction.

The Surge!
P.S. Important Update: My marketing team sent out an email for me yesterday, introducing my new Peak Performance Putting Videos and priced it incorrectly.
The price they set was $67.00 (what you saw yesterday), I decided that I wanted this video series reduced to more like 1/2 that price… so that I can get it into as many people's hands as possible. It's that important to me.
I can't think of an easier way for you to lower your scores than to improve your putting.
So it's still just $1.00 to try it for 30 days, but at the end of the trial, if you decide you want to keep the videos, it will only be 1/2 of yesterday's price.
Now, if you are one of my loyal customers who purchased the Putting Videos already, rest assured… I'm going to honor this lower price at the end of your 30 day trial, just like everyone else. You have my word on that.
