Yesterday I talked about how overactive shoulders can cause you to come over the top, creating a cut. As is often the case, our Director of Club Fitting Operations, Lynn "Doc" Griffin, had another take on the subject.
Doc reminded me that there are at least two other factors that may cause you to throw your club up and out as you begin your downswing. The first is that your club may be too long for your swing and you may be subconsciously trying to compensate for this by coming over the top. This, in and of itself, isn't as big a problem for rotational swingers because they can just flatten their swing a little more to make the adjustment. But as I have said many times before, when you are swinging from way back in the Sacred Burial Ground, all sorts of things can happen to keep your swing path and none of 'em are good! So check to see that your clubs are the proper length for your swing and not some club manufacturer's estimate of what the average golfer needs.
The second thing that Doc mentions is that having too light of a club for your swing speed may be the culprit. So if your clubs seem to be the right length, you may want to visit a Swing Surgeon Certified Club Fitter to check your swing weight and the M.O.I. (Moment of Inertia) for each of your clubs. To find a Certified Fitter in your area, place your mouse over the Golf Instruction tab above. Then, click on the Instructors and Fitters tab to see all the fitters in your region. Can't find it? Just click here for a direct link to the list of instructors and fitters in your area.
