PPGS Power From Centrifugal Force, Not Rotation

Tue, 01/29/2013 - 12:00 -- Don Trahan

We all want to hit the ball farther. Whether it's to keep up with your friends or your kids, being able to hit the ball with more power is a common desire. Rotational swingers do this by turning even more than they already do. Just the thought of turning that much makes my back hurt! So, how do we increase our power using the Peak Performance Golf Swing?

Dr. Bill Ammon sent in a comment about losing power if he doesn't turn. Though we turn to the toe line, you don't want to get in the habit of thinking you have to make a bigger turn in order to preserve or increase power. That's just not how the PPGS works.

I seem to have a problem with my turn. If I swing I seem to turn before I reach my ball but if I don't turn I lose power.
Dr. Bill

I think the turn that Dr. Bill is referring to is in his forward upswing. Anytime you start your downswing (which we call forward upswing) with a turn, the turning will automatically start pulling your body forward, ahead of the ball. That's why we see a lot of rotational swingers slow their swing down by moving downward so they don't get too far ahead of the ball. They will often arch their wrists as well to get the club square. I feel like all these movements take your whole body out of balance because you're changing major angles during your swing.

Dr. Bill says he loses power when he keeps his body still and centered. You've got to understand the differences between the PPGS and a rotational swing. Rotational swings primarily get their power by turning the body fast and using the body to pull the arms. We're just the opposite. We get our power from centrifugal force. Because we swing vertically, we're working in harmony with gravity. If you get rotational, it takes more energy to swing the club because you're now working against gravity.

We get our power by keeping our body more still and swinging our arms faster towards the target. If you want to hit the ball longer, you've got to have arm acceleration. You get arm acceleration by keeping the body quiet, so you want to avoid torso rotation.

What's the number one PPGS rule? The fewer angles the better. Set up with good angles, and then maintain them. Keep the body quiet, then accelerate the arms. Try this and I'm confident you'll start hitting the ball with more power.

Keep it vertical!

Steve

I enjoy all four of those things too. I will say that playing chess is the only one you listed where I have not hurt myself.

I think what people have to understand is that Surge's daily video is not a quick tip, but a disertation and an answer to a question about an area of the swing that someone is having trouble with. You have to wait for the tip, or the answer, and that is what make's this site so unique. I really look forward to checking my email every morning to see what the discussion will be about, and what the usual suspects have to say about the information given, and their fierce protection of Surge when someone questions his theories or philosophy. I have seen nothing but improvement with my game since stumbling onto this blog, and even though sometimes you have to wait for the pearl, it's always something that rings a bell, and is a technique, or swing thought that makes a difference. As the Master said to the student on the old TV series Kung Fu, "patience, Grasshopper" good things come to those who wait. So, settle back and relax, and enjoy the ride. If you want a quick tip, go on YouTube, and search the golf videos, I'm sure you'll find something that suits your fancy. Mike

Mike

You made some great points partner. It is good to know there are other folks out there who are not caught up in the whole microwave food, drive through fast food, and the I want it right now mentality.

Glad Surge is helping your game, keep up the good work.

Good to read your comments,
Dick

Mike, that was one of the most clearly spoken true statement we've had in quite a while. Well said indeed. Very astute. Don really cares about us and our progress. It is so true that it is reflected in his thoughtful answers to golf questions as you said. I have had the honor to meet and spend time with him twice. It's been two years now so I'm ready for a third and hopefully soon. He is a true American through and through. Conservative and sober yet has a great sense of humor. It shows up on the videos on occasion. He is the same in person as we see in these dailies. We are all lucky to have found him. He attracks people just like you Mike. Hope I have the chance to meet you some day at a Swing Surgeon event. It's gentlemen like you who quietly watch and learn that we love to hear from more often.

This is the best advice I've ever received about centrifugal force. When you combine this with the extra weight of the Enlow Grips it's a great combination. I've had several conversations with Bill Marshall (PPGS club fitter in Lakeland, Fl) and he really helped me understand this combination.
I'll be 74 in March and I thought my best golf was behind me. Not true. If you live in the Central Florida area give Bill a call (863-670-7478).

Surge,
A few months back, maybe as much as 6, you mentioned in one of your videos, a brand name of a driver that you have had in your bag for a number of years.
I was wondering if you could tell me that brand name.

Thanks,
Bill

Hi Robert:

Thanks for the comment. As I recall, I paid for something from Don years ago (thought that was why I have been receiving the tips)...but I'm old and forget stuff so maybe I'm mistaken. So I decided to take your advice and try to order what I want (the hard copy of the basic swing) online. It wouldn't work. I went to the Surge shop and highlighted the basic swing option, but when I hit "hard copy" a message box popped up saying an error ocurred. I tried it several times and got the same message. So I called the toll free number, told the gal what happened, and left my name and telephone number. She said that someone would contact me about ordering what I am trying to get (a DVD, which will work better for my situation). Hopefully this will solve my problem.

Thanks again for your reply and suggestions.

Dave

Was likely Debbie you talked to. She'll get you some help for a certainty. If it's possible, they will make it happen. Be persistent and if it is not possible, let me know and I may be able to make you a hard copy of the fundamentals video. Likely not needed as I think they will be able to help you.

Good luck and keep us posted. we're a family here and want you to succeed.
