Remember to Protect Yourself from the Elements

Thu, 04/07/2011 - 20:32 -- Don Trahan

Since we all play the game of golf, it's important to remember that being out in the sun all day can have a negative effect if you don't take the proper precautions. I, for one, have taken steps to ensure that my face, neck, and other areas exposed during a round of golf are fully protected from the sun's rays.

One of these steps was to start wearing a full brimmed hat. I used to wear a visor every time I played, but unfortunately it did not protect my whole face, most notably the sides near my cheeks. I have had a few procedures as a result, and now I try to protect my whole face by wearing these types of hats.

However, what was good for my skin was not good for my game. Because of that hat being so wide, I was knocking it off of my head after I recoiled from my T-finish. Subconsciously, I started getting wider at my finish, to avoid knocking the hat on the ground. This was not good, and so when I finally realized it, I simply started taking off the hat before each shot and then I put it right back on when I'm finished.

So make sure you are protecting yourself out there. Whether it's wearing sunblock, a wide brimmed hat, or sunglasses, we all need to take care of ourselves so we can keep coming back to play the game we love.

Keep it vertical,

The Surge!

Don't be a sexist pig. If the ladies want to grow beards, mind your own business.

If the golf thing don't work out for them, they could always get a job with a carnival. Hey, times are tough out there.

Hope it clears up for you folks soon.

Dad is 75, and in great shape. He is a blast to spend time with. Golf is really only an excuse to spend time with him. He has become a great friend He has treated me like the son he never had since the day I married his daughter. Kelly Jo is the oldest of 4 daughters. He does not have the same relationship with any of his other "sons." It is really too bad. The other guys are all big city guys. They don't know what they are missing on having this man as a friend instead of just a father in law. He is just a simple country man who does not fit in with their crowd. He and I are like two peas in a pod. One of Kelly Jo's sisters told her she is jealous of how much time dad and I spend together. I told her to get a set of clubs and come on. At family get togethers it is always dad and I standing in the yard talking about golf and shooting and the other guys standing around in the air conditioning talking about stocks and cars. Guess we all have priorities.

Don't worry too much about dad. That old man is dangerous and cunning. No elderly abuse going on out here. Haha.

Eldon, it's great advice and everyone appreciates it, but very rarely would there be any specific response to something from "Surge's staff." Your original post was not a question but a statement, so there wasn't anything to answer.

Interestingly, though, if you look at the two latest videos from the Texas golf school, you'll see that Surge is now wearing a solid cloth hat rather than the woven mesh straw hat he had in this video. Clearly he and his doctor came to the same conclusion.

Thanks. I know it will rough especially on my grandkids, just like last December was.

I will draw my strength to carry on from the same place it always comes from.

Best tip I got years ago about sandtraps. Put the sand behind the ball on green and your ball will also be on the green. If the flag is near the bunker I hit the sand about two inches behind the ball. If the flag is on the otherside of the green then I take less sand, about one inch behind the ball. The length of your swing will also depend on the distance to the flag.

My only idea on the best sunscreen technology Roy is Neutrogena. High SPF and it is dry to the touch once it dries and not very smelly.

Extra distance comes to those who embrace new technology and are open to change. You are living proof that I am no Steve Jobs. My driver shaft is every bit as revolutionary as when Apple brings out another iPod, IPhone or iPad and sales shoot through the roof. The howling mob of detractors here remind me of all the people (Microsoft backers) who for years were Apple detractors and predicted the demise of Apple.

There are stages of adoption of new technology -- first is denial and denunciation of anything that isn't coming from the established order.

And one more tip on new technology R2 -- the world really is round and you can't fall off the edge.

The first step is to properly learn the Surge Swing, and if you don't have the Foundations Manual and PPGS Swing Series videos, you're going to have a hard time with that. The Spring Tune Up Sale is still going on. Get a good deal on some great videos that will transform your golf game if you're willing to put in the time and effort to read, watch, and learn them well.

Eldn60--Robert F's response to your post is better than I could have written, but I'm posting another reply anyway.  I'm sure that there are a lot of people who read your helpful post about hats, but they may not feel a strong need to reply with a "thank you" note, maybe being reluctant to take up blog space for such a note.  Others of us have become so comfortable posting little notes.

Rest assured, though, that if you ever posted a question on some element of the Surge Swing, or post something with a conversational tone, you'll get responses.

I rode a cow once. I jumped off my horse and grabbed the steer by the horns and was supposed to flip it and tie the feet. I slipped coming off my mount and ended up on top of the cow. I went for a heck of a ride. I was laughing so hard I forgot to jump off. When we came to the fence, he helped me dismount.

Some times I have to learn the hard way. As my 1st sgt in the Corps used to say "Life is hard, it is even tougher when you are stupid."

Amen Surge on this Video. I have been teaching golf for nearly 15 years and never took into account what the sun can do to me unto last year. My Dermatologist cut three very large holes in my back last year to remove cancerous areas. She fussed at me about protection and it took me nearly a year to take her seriously. She had to remove two more areas recently. My golf shop now smells of sunscreen.

S2:

I have offered (several times) to have my fitter bring back to SC some shafts made from the new technology (Doc doesn't know what it is - he thinks he does but he is wrong) to give Surge a demo. I will pay for the airfare. You must have missed those messages.

I have not seen if Doc or Surge have accepted this offer. So the ball is in their court as to whether or not they want to see a technology that is new to both of them. This new technology will add at least 30 yards to Surge's drives.

jb51 reports that a friend of his in the SD area came upon a new material in a shaft that was delivering 40 more yards. Maybe it is this new material that I use or maybe some other maker in San Diego has also leap frogged anything and everything that Doc can sell as of today.

What we do know is that there is one and maybe 2 offerings on the market now that supply a huge leap in added distance. What I use and maybe something else. My fitter is not shy ... he does indeed talk a lot to anyone and everyone ... so I have no idea who jb51's buddy is or if jb51 was trying to smoke out details and make me reveal what is in my shaft. All I know is that tour pros have seen it, some use it and no one else.

What shocked the heck out of me was seeing the German guy hit my driver and have the ball go 360 yards straight as an arrow. At 66 going on 67 it was fun to hit the ball as far as he can with his brand new R11 Taylormade deal. My head on my driver is an old R7.

DJ is so much more gifted as an athlete than I am and so schooled in how to hit the ball straight that I am guessing he would hit the fairway 80% of the time using my driver and his drives (supposing there is no reason for them to be shorter) would wind up between 340 to 360 yards from the tee. And misses would be very close to the fairway. No Rory type massive hooks to the left. And he would do this using a 75% effort 3/4 swing.

The real deal is this ... the whoosh would happen way way past the ball. DJ would be instantly offput by the massive amount of feel from my club but this is really the club adapting to his swing (like magic) as opposed to what he has now -- too stiff for him and he has to adapt to his driver shaft.

The creator of this shaft I am thinking would even personalize a driver shaft just for DJ but DJ could use mine til it was finished. He would want to get it refinished - I slammed it into the top of launch monitor booth at Stadium.

And a member of the Callaway Staff is being fitted for one of these shafts. That could mean it could be an OEM selection there. I am the person who got him to try my driver. So if or when Callaway can supply it to you then it will fun to see all of you eat crow. yummy hmmm hmmm good. Same with Surge. I think he will want to purchase 30 yards. Rolls off the years real fast.

Now if we can just introduce Gideon Ariel technology to the yahoos here then you can start have a direction for optimizing your body to swing the club in the proper PPGS manner. Feel and real are two different things.

I needed a reason to smile tonight, and you never let me down.

Dick, Take it off and then replace it after your shot ; - ) Someone was on about sunglasses G.Kay I bought a pair of sunglasses here in Dalian. They are, I think for those who take part in cycling, marathons etc. They have large lenses, and inside the frame, they have an inner removable rubber lining. This keeps dust and cr*p out of my eyes, when it is windy. The arms of the glasses which go over the ear, are contoured to the shape of the head, and have an adjustble elastic band through the end pieces. They are comfortable to wear and no way would they come adrift during your swing. Just a thought!
For all. The vast amount of things you can buy here in China, contrary to popular opinion, are not cheap tat! Compared to three pairs I have bought here [two for me, one for the wife], the expensive Nike ones I bought in UK were cr*p. Comfortable to wear, but the coating on the lenses started 'pitting' and they lost their UV protection.
PS for Brian Harris, they are UV protected and distortion free.

Good posting -- and timely too. My father owned and operated a small construction company for many years -- always out in the sun 10 to 12 hours every day. At the age of about 70 he began developing skin cancers that had to be removed.

In addiotn to the wide brimmed hat, his doctor also advocated a full beard for more facial protection. You might give that a thought too. Of course this idea does not work for Kim or JanetM!

Not really. You just go to Wal Mart, buy some peel and stick Velcro strips or dots, and one quick push up of the left brim, keeps it up until the swing is done and one little pull frees it to drop back down into place. Gotta love Velcro.

Hahaha! Not so helpful for us girls no! I remember my mom telling me a story. I can't remember if it was me or my brother, but dad had a full face beard when one of us was a baby. Then one day he shaved it, and it totally freaked us out and we were so upset! And confused! Because we recognized the voice but that was not the face that went with the voice! Personally I'm not a fan of face fuzz, but to each their own.

Now it is important for everyone to remember that we ALL need at least 20 minutes of unprotected sun exposure every day so our bodies can produce vit D3 the natural way. And use an organic sunscreen if you can - the less chemicals the better!

I owe it all to Ronnie. He had a birthday recently. I was hitting some balls at the range. I was singing the happy birthday song, because I had his birthday on my mind. I realized that if I said "Happy" when I started my take away and "Birthday" as the club contacted the ball, my rhythm was perfect. I have been using that ever since, and it works for me.

I guess we all just have to find that "right" phrase or tempo that works for us.

I am just blessed that the right song for me did not turn out to be a rap song. I think I would just have to give up golf again.

What a wonderful day for golf in central Oklahoma. It was about 82 degrees when we finished playing and the winds were light all day. It has been a long time since I wore shorts while playing. I think I scared a few people with my German/Scottish white legs. I am just so happy to not be playing golf in long johns.

I clipped dad's tail feathers by 6 strokes. Nothing real remarkable about the game today. Well, except I was on the green in 1 on every par 3. 1 birdie, 2 pars, and one dreaded 3 putt. I hate 3 putting worse than just about anything.

I know, stop whining, at least I was out there. I am going to try to play a round tomorrow, if the weather holds off on the rain. Then, no more golf till Monday. I will spend some time at the range on Saturday, then work at the course on Sunday after church. If I am able to get out tomorrow, that will make 5 rounds this week. I almost went back out to play another 18 after dad left today. But my loving wife called with a short honey do list. Priorities! I may have to get an unlisted cell number to keep that from happening again. Haha.

Who else got to play today, and how did it go?

Thanks. You are right. I know sometimes we think it is being dramatic when we tell some one to make the most of every moment. But it is true.

One of the worst duties that ever feel to me as a law enforcement officer was when I had to go to a family and notify them of a death. I can't count the number of times they told me the last words they spoke to the deceased were harsh. They were crushed that they would never get to tell that person how much they loved them and they were sorry for what they said. Kelly Jo and I have an understanding about that. No matter what the problem is between us, we always put it to rest and tell each other how much we still love each other before we go to sleep or one of us has to leave for work. You just never know what will happen before you wake up or get home. I don't want the last words we spoke to be harsh. There will always be time to settle the disagreement when we get back to talking about it.

Thanks for your friendship,
Dick

I knew the Surge Nation would be there with their support, thoughts, and prayers. I also knew that you and several other family members who have been touched by this would be able to relate in some ways the average person would not.

From your lips to God's ears.

Your prayers and those of the other members mean so much to us. I have shared the replies with Kelly Jo. Between the responses when both boys went back down range early and now this situation, she is starting to understand what a special bunch of people are in the Surge Nation. When I first started using the slogan "The sun never sits on the Surge Nation", she just thought it was me being funny. Now, as she has seen the places where the replies are coming from and the times when they are posted, she is starting to understand. This morning she said she was amazed so many people from all over the world were on this one blog and that they even cared enough about some small town cowboy to take the time to reply.

It makes me proud to be a member of the Surge Nation.

You all know the old saying, "When it rains, it pours." It was raining when both of our sons got sent back down range early. Well, it just started pouring in our lives. We just got a phone call informing us that Kelly Jo's ex, Bill, the father of our youngest son was diagnosed with lung cancer this afternoon. It is stage 4 and he is not expected to last very long.

We have not passed this on to KP yet. He is already away from his wife and working crazy hours down range. We will probably be able to talk with him tomorrow. He and his dad have a "different" kind of relationship, but Bill is still his dad. The ones I am really worried about are my daughter Missy and my 3 grandkids out here. We lost their grandfather on the other side just before Christmas last year to cancer. They are just so young to have to go through this again.

The good news is that Bill is in the right place with our Lord. That is most important. Please join me in keeping Bill, KP, Missy, and my grandkids in your prayers.

I guess sometimes how many rounds I got to play this week, or being the class clown have to take a back seat to the "real" things that come up in life. Bill is an unusual guy. He can be tough to be around at times, but he has a big heart when it comes to his kids and grandkids. He served our nation in the US Marine Corps where he served in combat in Vietnam.
