The Rubber Band Theory - Wide Knees Outward Pressure

Mon, 08/29/2016 - 06:05 -- Don Trahan

Wide knees, outward pressure, and flared feet. Three key aspects of your stance in the Peak Performance Golf Swing. But how much pressure should you be applying in your legs? Today I have a tip that came to me during a recent lesson on how to visualise and gauge your stance pressure. A rubber band as a great visual tool to understand how much pressure you need in your legs. Too little and your setup is not stable; too much and you are under too much stress - the band breaks.

I realized a couple of weeks ago that what Don is teaching about wide knees/outward pressure is also what creates torque in the PPGS...and as most golfers know, torque, when released, creates power (and you don't have to twist way around in rotation to get torque). In fact, if you don't have that pressure, the speed you create by swinging your arms can be, in a sense, lost ...it can sort of get diffused, rather than channeled into the ball at impact; which would make for a weaker shot. If you bump correctly, get on the outside of the forward foot you are going to release a lot of energy into the ball simply by keeping the pressure until the correct moment of release as explained in the video. And if you are stable like this you don't have to be afraid to swing pretty hard.

This past Tuesday, I drove up to Lebanon, TN, to have a fitting with John "Hugo" Huheey, a certified PPGS Fitter. He is excellent and had me properly fitted in 4 tries: 4 different club heads and 3 different shafts.

What that has to do with this topic is that, with my old Cobra Driver with a 45-1/2" shaft and 460cc head, my attempts at maintaining the wide knees/outward pressure were problematic. Most of the time, I would get really close, but was hitting most of my drives low on the heel.

After getting fitted with a 43" shaft and a smaller head, all of a sudden every drive was almost perfectly on the sweet spot. My carry distance increased over ten yards and went from pull fades to mostly straight with a slight draw. The fitted club is the first driver I have ever held or swung that felt totally balanced. The various clubs I have used over the last 50 years never felt anywhere near this one. As the saying goes, "You never know what you don't know," and I never completely understood what having a properly fitted club could do for my swing.

I found getting the wide knees with outward pressure easier to set and maintain, and I stopped getting on my toes on the FUS, which had been causing me to swing over the top - pull fade.

I cannot wait to get my fitted club in 2 weeks. John Huheey is absolutely great and I would recommend to anyone in Northern Alabama who needs a certified fitter that the trip to Lebanon, TN (3-1/4 hours from Arab) is well worth the time and money.
