Should You Wear a Golf Glove While Putting?

Thu, 01/30/2014 - 12:00 -- Don Trahan

Some people like to golf with a glove on. Some like to wear two gloves, while others don't like to wear any at all. Most players will wear one glove when swinging all their clubs, but when they putt they remove it. That's how I play, but how should you play?

In the end, the choice comes down to your personal preference. With different textures, sizes, and styles, it may take awhile to figure out which one works best for you. We've all got different hands, so do some testing before you make your final decision. Jim Periman wanted to here my take on the topic, so today I'll discuss why I don't putt with a glove.

What is your opinion on Golf gloves? I practice almost everyday Putting and never wear a golf glove. Then when I play I always wear a golf glove. Don't really know why except when I learned how to play everybody wore a Golf Glove. I never bothered to take it off for Putting, but, I noticed alot of Pros and non pros take it off for putting. I have taken it off in the past for putting and I forget to put it back on for the next Tee-Shot. As you know the mind is the second thing to go, the golf swing being the first. What is your feeling about Playing with a Glove??

Some of the game's greatest players never even wore gloves. Fred Couples is one major champion that comes to mind. Now competing on the Champions Tour, he still doesn't wear one. In contrast, Jack Nickaus used to put his glove on at the practice range before a round and wouldn't take it off until he walked off the 18th green. It really does come down to personal choice.

I like to wear a glove during a round, but I always take it off between shots and while I'm putting. I just automatically stick it in my back pocket because I've been doing it for so long.

There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to putting with a glove. Tommy Gainey plays and putts with 2 gloves, and he's a former winner on the PGA TOUR. If you're not sure what's best for you, try out all of your different options. Maybe wearing a glove will end up helping you drain some more putts and shoot lower scores.

Good luck and keep it vertical!

Don,
I like most of the tips and information you send out in your videos but they are far too long. Over 11 minutes to discuss if you should wear a glove......wow, you could have delivered the same message in less than a minute. Stay on point and keep it concise. This would make your tips a lot more useful. We don't need to know how much you sweat or how many ways to put a glove in your pocket. I can never get to the end of your videos...you lose me after 2 or 3 minutes. Just my two cents.
Thanks

We?
Certainly Sydney, It was your two cents. It's a shame you wasted those two cents being critical. Trying to recall if I recognize you from other comments. Hmmmnnn.. not off hand.
Is that all you have to contribute is your personal critic of Don's efforts to to cover several different golf related subjects every week? If you don't like his style why waste time here? If you like some of what he shares when have you said something positive or helpful? I normally don't respond any more to unappreciative jack wagon's like you but your arrogance of saying "we" did it. Yes speak for yourself and better yet keep it to yourself unless you want to share something helpful.

I'll summarize Don's 11 minute and 20 second video in three words........it's personal preference. If you guys got any more out of it, you have a good imagination.
Dream on duffers.

Not to be overly critical but Don does go on and on. I appreciate the effort, I really do, but 5-6 minutes is generally enough time to make a point. If he golfs the way he teaches it must be a verrry long round.

gargoyle, what you see of Don on video is what you get. when he gets started on a subject , he exhaust all he knows about it.I play a lot of golf with Don and if nobody is holding us up we will play our round in 3-1/2 hours. Thank you.

Don really didn't answer the guy's question. My former instructor (before I met PPGS) told me to always take off the glove for putting because it enhances your feel and touch. I even take off my glove for chipping around the green. Nothing ticks off your golf buddies more than chipping in for birdie. Hah!

Sodak, I do chip-ins regularly too, but like Jack Nicklaus I put the glove on at the start and take it off at the finish, like the man said, it's all about preference.

Like you instructor said "it's all about feel" then why take the glove off and change that feel between clubs, makes no sense to me.

We are all the same, but different, LOL.

Yep. There is no answer because it's whatever we feel best about. Tommy (two gloves) Gainey has done pretty well for himself.

Some people use a glove and take it off on the green and some people use a glove and don't take it off.

I've never hit a golf ball with a glove on in my life. I did buy a glove one time but on the first tee a member of my group was about to have a panic attack because he had forgotten his glove so I gave him my new one. Never looked back and never bought another one.

If I thought it would benefit me I would wear one but my hands don't sweat and my hands are nothing but callouses anyway so I can't see a need.

Steve, indeed it is personal preference. Funny you mention your calloused hands. I cannot allow my hands to get rough or calloused because of my occupation/profession. Even as a kid learning golf my Dad started me with a glove. Just got used to it. I've tried with and without while putting. I can putt just as good or just as bad with or without while putting. I have even played with two gloves like Gainey. My normal preference is glove on from the first tee and on until last putt on 18. My wife prefers no glove at all is playing better every week. She had 4 pars our last 9 out shooting a 42. She just started playing two years ago so great progress. No glove, one or two, it is all what feels best and gets the results while playing.
