Start Your Swing With The Master Setup Position

Sat, 02/23/2013 - 10:00 -- Don Trahan

What's the first thing you need in order to make a proper Peak Performance Golf Swing? If you answered custom fit clubs, you're right. But, let's assume that you've already visited a PPGS certified fitter and own all the right equipment that was built specifically for you. Still not sure?

Whenever I work with students, the first thing I look at is their setup. I won't even worry about their swing until we've established a solid master setup position first. The PPGS is very unique, and so too is the setup position. It's what sets our angles, which must then be maintained throughout the swing.

John Nora has been of follower of the PPGS for quite some time and was looking for a refresher on the topic of the master setup position and it's importance on the golf swing.

I am an old member of your former site and purchased all of the videos there and cannot get them on your new site. One video you spent on the Master set up position and this helped me get the club started correctly and in position to go up the tree better than anything else. Do you still suscribe to turning your right elbow in to your body (the master setup position)?

Thanks, John

Yes, I most certainly do John! The master setup position is so important because it sets all of the muscles in the right positions to make a simple, one-piece takaway at the right angle and speed.

The first rule of the Peak Performance Golf Swing is that "golf is a game of angles, the fewer the better." The master setup position puts you in the correct spot to have the least amount of angles throughout your swing. Your job becomes maintaining those angles. Remember that we turn only to the toe line, and then it's all lift. WIth the right arm below the left in the setup, it allows you to turn to the toe line with the clubhead positioned toe up rather easily.

The setup determines the motion, so there's nothing more critical than your setup position.

For those of you who have had a similar issue like John and the videos you once had access to are not available on this website, please contact Customer Support here. They will take care of any problems you're experiencing and answer any questions you may have regarding the transfer of pre-purchased materials from my former website.

Keep it vertical!

Thanks Surge for this great video. It cleared up a lot of points for me. I may be guilty of occasionally overdoing the master setup position and opening the club face. I'll have to watch that. Your more detailed explanation of the clipboard drill was also very interesting.

I beleive the PPGS would be a good swing for those golfers that suffer from arthritis, particuarly in the hands, wrists and arms. Can you provide any additional tips for use of the PPGS for golfers with arthritis?

Thanks,
Craig

Craig,
We have talked about pain, inflammation and Arthritis and bursitis several times before. I will post a few for you.
We have quite a few 'old guys' on this site who have one, all and more of the above. You are absolutely correct that this swing is better for avoiding many of the aches and pains we all can have regardless of age. This truly is the body friendly swing. I can attest to that after 4 years of using it. Of course Surge also recommends a Holistic approach that includes ones whole life style. I and many others have made changes to make sure our over all diet, exercise, stretching and supplementation are assisting those health and wellness goals. I can tell you this. I am the only person I know at home or work that hasn't been sick this year, at all. Doesn't mean I may not catch something yet but it does speak to my lifestyle. I do suffer with some shoulder challenges including arthritis and bursitis. I now will never use another golf swing as I am beyond convinced this is the best way not only for the pain but more birdies. love it.

Craig, are you still with me? OMG sometimes I forget the overwhelming wealth of amazing information we have received over the last 4 plus years. To the extent possible I recommend reading the comments of the Surge nation when found below the subject. Not all comments have been preserved but where applicable you will find lots of additional wisdom from many of our readers and blog contributers.

Once again I will inform you and remind countless others that so many of the answers are here on this site IF yes only IF we are willing to do the research.
You'll notice that there is a search bar on the above right of this page below the log in/log out (and above 'Support'). So many of our readers would be able to get most of their questions answered if they would let there fingers and brain do the walking. I also deeply appreciate that very few (if any) web sites have a huge archived library like the one found here covering every golf many times over from every angle and many things unrelated to golf they may help any one looking.

The list I presented is only a tiny fraction of blogs on the subject of pain and the relief of.
They were all found simply by putting such words as wrist, knees, elbow, lower back, arthritis, swelling and 'body friendly swing'.
Then I simply copied and pasted them here. Now with all those articles posted together here all I'll need to do in the future is review them here.
Pretty cool:)

THANKS AGAIN SURGE
