Throwback Thursday: A Good Release is a Controlled Release

Thu, 03/20/2014 - 13:00 -- Don Trahan

I'm busy putting together a whole batch of new daily videos for the Surge Nation, so today I thought I'd share an oldie but a goodie! Back before I had my "Backyard Driving Range," there was the "Back Porch." I shot many daily videos from my own back porch. This video was shot over 3 years ago, but the message in it still rings as true as it did then.

In order to have a good release, it must be controlled. You don't want to get the idea of rolling your wrists. That's not the proper swing thought. Instead, think about your arms moving together, from the shoulders all the way down to the wrists.

Enjoy today's "Throwback Thursday" video while you're taking a break from all the NCAA Madness!

Keep it vertical!

I think that it's a very good idea to repeat some of these gems from the past. With my memory anything three years old has been long forgotten!!

Surge,
Thanks for this throwback. Like all of your videos they all impart knowledge to we hackers. Sometimes even the basics need hammering home to us. I have found in reviewing some of the old videos points that were either missed or forgotten. We Surgites are blessed, no doubt about it. Videos, and other Surgites views give a much fuller picture and allow us to better understand this unique body friendly swing.
Strange how there are even other Pros now 'quietly' advocating a more 'upright swing'! Who would have thought it?
DH&DL two happy hackers improving by the day.

Great idea Surge. Love the repeat the classics concept Surge. As I have reminded the Surge Nation many times there are 1000's of free valuable lessons stored in the library video vault now that anyone can access. I hope you will continue to do this each week as you see fit.
Todays was golden as I often over release in my effort to gain more distance and draw the ball. A fast, wild release requires perfect timing that only happens randomly so control is a smart approach. I find that if I am swinging up and over the shoulder as you teach I don't have to think about timing the release it just happens. Swing up and face the target, not left field.
Been working hard on my lofted irons the last few weeks. My 59* LW and 55* Sandy. Those 35-75 yard shots are where I get in scoring position or not. Yesterday I had a 45 yarder after a really good drive and hit the LW to 10 inches. Those are putts I can make:)
Hope the warmer weather is getting every one back out on the golf course and back to commenting on this blog. I look forward to hearing from you all as the 2014 golf season kicks in with the big thaw.
