This past weekend I played #11 at Woodfin Ridge Golf Club 25 times. No, it wasn't the ultimate bogey hole. I was part of the Heart-in-One Golf Classic, a charity event I was invited to by Donna Ivey, Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation at Spartanburg Regional. Donna and her team got me back into playing condition after my heart operation. Helping the 25 teams who came through #11 was the least I could do to help the rehab program's cause. And it was simply great.
After the tournament I sat down with Donna to talk about her program because I think all Peak Performance Golf students should know about it and maybe consider something like it in your part of the world. Bottom line, the tournament raises money to put defibrillators in every school in the county where I live. And they've done a fantastic job. That little machine saves lives every day.
This was one of those “give back” moments you hear professional golfer talk about. They talk about — and do — give back to the community, to the game. Did you know the total of money raised by the professional tours (PGA Tour, Champions Tour, LPGA Tour and Nationwide Tour) totaled over $120 million in 2009 alone? And our little tournament here (which raised thousands) isn't part of that number.
Take a look at the video. It just makes you proud you play golf.
