Tuesday at The Heritage

Wed, 04/20/2011 - 14:55 -- Don Trahan

I walked 18 holes with DJ as he played his practice round Tuesday. The course is in magnificent shape and there's nothing better than coming home!

DJ talks about how he has recently rededicated himself to working hard at his golf game after a slow start to the 2011 season. We talked about a few other things on the practice green following the round as well.

The Heritage means a lot to not only DJ, but all the guys on tour who love playing this event. The first Heritage tournament was won by Arnold Palmer in 1969, and names like Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Johnny Miller, Nick Faldo, and Greg Norman have all been winners here.

With such a rich tradition, it would be a shame to see this tournament not find a corporate sponsor for the upcoming years. So, hopefully we'll be back next year to enjoy the beauty that is Harbour Town Golf Links.

The Surge!

Surprise. I hit the driver very well at that length and swingweight. I used impact tape and it was consistant and longer as well. The tour flight lowered my ball flight where I wanted it. Next time I will start marking the grip with tape and choking down to fine tune it.

Maybe. My reshaft fee is $80. My new club fee is $100. New for $100 or old for $80?

Hello Robert,

A friend of mine had a set of Snake Eye game improvement irons built, and loves them. Ask Leith if he has some sample Snake Eyes that you can try on the range.

Thank you for responding. It started raining so I will try and hit the club tomorrow. I am pissed that I failed to get the adapter on properly. I usually get the silk screen lined up right for what that is worth just in case UST aligned the spine right (not likely), however it seems I can find the spine by turning the shaft around to different settings. I do like to tinker but it has certainly cost me in the long run. If I had my druthers" I would get fit. It is always about the $$. I also started with long shaft with the plug in the hosel because it is a tour flight with lower ball flight so it softened the flex a bit I hope. It is very difficult to be stuck inside my head.

Even though it has a dark wrapper, it is a surprisingly mild smoke with a spicy overtone. I think you would like it. You might be able to order a 5 cigar sampler. That way you wont end up with a bunch of cigars that you don't enjoy.

Thanks for all your input on my post concerning golf balls.

I finally got all those balls sorted out. I had no idea how many balls it takes to overfill a 5 gallon bucket. I think I could open a used ball store. Never mind, no one wants my used balls, even for free. I have tried giving them away.

I found 9 Bridge Stone balls in the bucket. 6 of them are the e6 several of you mentioned. I am going to take them out when I play again. I will just have to use them when I am not playing with dad.

I will let you know how it goes,
Dick

Dick Lee:

Yes - it is my "home" course -- I usually score anywhere from 88 to 95 - usually a function of my chipping and bunker play. I have shot an 80 there on one or two occasions and 81 a couple of times -- but those represent "going low" for me -- like a tour guy shooting a 61 or 62 -- it happens, but not often.

Forgot to mention == only 2 bunkers hit today with 0 sandies, but two "very near misses"

Also on several fairways on the back nine, I was playing arund "sprinkler man" -- dodging sprinklers, or hitting soft spots where the water was just turned off.

Leave it to you to jump on my typo -- it should have been an anomaly -- and it is NOT in my shorts! LOL

It is a lovely old style tree lined course. a real shame that it has fallen on hard times, and is receivership currently. The good news though -- NEW owners are supposed to be announced this month.

Great minds think alike. I order from JR about every two weeks. I really like the JR Alternatives. Often times, they are better than the originals.
BTW, the next time you order, try a bundle of JRPAM. I think you will be pleasantly surprised by the awesome nose hit that it provides.

Darn it Robert,
I was hoping to get the chance to play against some of you guys one of these days but with ya'll getting outfitted with the right equipment I wouldn't be able to compete.
I would feel like a guy showing up at a turkey shoot with BB gun.

For real, I hope you enjoy the new clubs. Make sure you sleep with those things though. I'm still not sure Lynn is sleeping with that driver. He thinks I'm kidding but I'm not. LOL

Robert Meade:

Yes it is nice to be in the short grass, and chip and putt well also.

The course is not intended to be semi-private by any means. It just seems to work out that few people are out early on Wednesday mornings. By the tim I fineshed up at 10:00, the course was beginning to fill up. The "older folks" that play on weekdays seem to be a mixed group -- a few are early risers, some sleep in an come out later.

Robert, I just made a quick check after your comment. It's only a problem with internet explorer and is not present with Firefox. It's also only on a few names such as Roger, JB51, Rvphelpsjr , etc. Must be one of those IE problems again. That's another reason I am preferring Firefox now. I generally have multiple programs running in each at any given moment though. Firefox rarely seems to have a problem, while IE can be a bitch at times.

I really like the looks of those irons, with the black finish. I never seemed to like the glare of the polished chrome finishes. Good looking blades.

Way back when I learned golf, I was taught by my father and a golf teacher to chip with any club in the bag depending on the situation. It gives you so much more control.

Coach I have returned JB to the "No fly zone." I have not read his last several posts.

I encourage everyone to do the same. He is gone, let him go.

I agree with everything you said. I have watched your posts to him. You have done all you can, and more than anyone could expect from you.

You are a man of honor. We all respect your opinion and the help you give us on this blog.

Put your paddle down, and just walk away.

Wow, what a beautiful golf course and area Hilton Head Island is. My wife and I drove around there last December and I thought I was on the set for 'Gone with the wind' it was so classic and the homes so pretty. Saw the 18th fairway and green from the top of the iconic land mark- the red and white striped light house. Awesome. Was almost drooling at the thought of playing there.
Good luck to Deej this week. Place it and putt it well!! I'll be watching with great interest.

Dick, Robert F has informed me of a software program called Dropbox, I've checked it out and downloaded it to my PC. If I Understand it correctly, I can put all 10-video lessons into one folder and will be able to share the contents of this folder through their program with any valid email address. When I enter your email as a sharing partner to this folder, I think you will receive an email with a notification and instructions on how to access the shared folder. This is new to me also, so hopefully it will not be too difficult for us to figure out. I have already set up my account and am downloading all 10-videos into a separate folder as I type this. Once I receive your email address from Doc, I will attempt the next step, which should result in your receiving an email from Dropbox with instructions to access the folder of interest.

Robert,
Good luck with your fitting and club making. Doc Griffin fitted me last week and is making a set of KZG irons with hybrids in the 4, 5, and 6 irons which he recommended. Did you read where K.J. Choi didn't have an iron longer than 7 in his bag at the Masters? He had 4 hybrids as his longer irons. I think Doc is right as far as the use of hybrids is concerned.

Anything better than your average is a real good game.

The maintenance boys love to play hit and run with you when it is a slow day on the course.

I can't say I am sorry. I have been silly and laughing till it hurts today. I have been on the blog all day and I am punch drunk. We have been swatting trolls all night. What a blast. I knew you could take it. Your skin is as thick as mine.

Your course sounds cool. Hope the new owners turn out to be good for your golf community out there.

Glad you got out. I am going to try to get in a round tomorrow. I will let you all know.

I am going to turn it over to you other night owls and hit the rack.

Sleeping with your new clubs is completely understandable.

However, there should be no inappropriate touching of your putter or your shaft.

Well, sooner or later, somebody is going to ask, so I might as well fess up now. It was a cold, cloudy, and windy day. I stunk the course up pretty good. Three putted almost every green and not one single GIR. I had a few pars, no birdies and a whole lot of doubles and a few triples. It was one of those ugly days where you wonder if you EVER knew how to play this game. Other than that, I was on a golf course with a bunch of friends, so it ain't all bad. End result was a miserable 52/49, I couldn't even break 100 today, But, there's always the next time! I love this game.

As a rough rule of thumb, 1/2 inch off the butt corresponds to approximately -3 swingweight points according to a 1999 manual from Dave Tutelman, so all other things being equal, you will need to trim about 1 1/2 inches to get down to D4.

Hey T,
If ya'll want to send private messages using your U-Tube site is a good way to do it. I don't know if Dick has one but I know you do (in fact I am a subscriber, waiting to see your swings). Charlie Y and I chat a good bit through the messages on U-Tube. Usually about intricacies of learning a skill which is probably too boring for this public arena.

We will just wait until they get all new pretty matching clubs, and then we will show up to play them. We will look like the Beverly Hillbillies showing up.

I think we should find us a jacked up 4X4 golf cart to ride around in. We could turn up the country music and do donuts in the fairway. Kind of a redneck version of Caddy Shack.

If it looks like we are going to hit someone with a ball, we just yell "Far."

Do you remember the song "I am a member of a country club?"

That is my life,

Good to hear from you. I was just getting ready to hit the rack. Glad I caught your post.

I type like I talk.

I hope I get out. They are calling for 40% rain. We need some of your rain here and down in Texas. Send a couple of bottles my way.

Nope, no floating balls. The guys told me my Pinnacles are as hard as rocks when I hit them. Well, they float like rocks too.

I will just stay around the house and swat trolls if it rains tomorrow.

Hope you had a great day today, and I wish you a blessed day tomorrow.

Good night my friend,
