Where Should Butt of Club Point in Setup?

Sat, 03/14/2015 - 12:00 -- Don Trahan

It's important to understand that my swing methods aren't just based on my own personal opinion of how to swing a golf club. The PPGS is the best way to swing a golf club because all of its elements are derived from the laws of physics and physiology. It's all based on facts!

One of the biggest differences you'll see in the setup of the PPGS is where the butt of the club points. Most instructors today will teach that the club should point at your belt buckle. In the PPGS, you will have a slight forward shaft lean in relation to your target because the butt of the club should point at your left hip (or right hip for lefties).

Having the butt of the club pointed at your left hip will allow for a neutral impact position, with both arms straight.

Watch the video above and I'll show you an easy trick to having correct grip and club position every time you set up to the ball.

Keep it vertical!

Thanks, Don!

I think the only other instructor I ever really had in golf, the guy who taught it when I took it as my phys ed requirement in college, must have read your book all those years ago (we are talking the late '80s). I always learned to have the butt of the club pointed at my left hip and when people tried to tell me later to point it at my belt buckle, that just never made any sense. The hands FEEL completely wrong in that position.

There are a few PPGS elements where Don and I agree to disagree, but this is not one of them. The forward shaft/hand press is spot on. Point the butt of the club at your left pant pocket or hip at set up and you're good to go. For me, this is my takeaway trigger. Reminds me of where to return to at impact.I can feel it.

Is the ever a time when the butt of the club points at the belt buckle?

Yes…at times when you chipping or pitching, per Kenny Knox video series. But other times….there it is again…that forward shaft/hand press is in play.

If you have not, just spend the $30 for the Kenny Knox Short Game series.
It's some of the best online instruction available. Best of Kenny and Don. From 50 yards Kenny cozies it right up next to the pin, effortlessly and repeatedly.

The best golf shot I ever made was a long putt with a 4 hybrid, per Kenny.
Don and I both learned something from Kenny Knox.

Great tip for me,Surge. I fight an over the top move and a flip at impact which never leads to anything good. One of my golfing buddies, who is very rotational points out the fact that I'm losing power and distance. The flat left wrist at setup naturally points the shaft at my left hip and maintaining a straight left arm corrects the problem with out even thinking about it. Weather here is starting to warm up and this tip is a great way to finally get out and get the rust off.
