Your Brain, Posture And The Accordion Effect

Thu, 06/16/2011 - 14:00 -- Don Trahan

O.K. Just stand there. What keeps you standing? Leg muscles? The way our bodies are built? Actually, it'€™s your brain. A certain percentage of our brain is devoted to keeping our posture. Any guess how much?

There'€™s the old saying we only use 10% of our brain. While not wanting to get into that argument, science has proven that 90% of our brain is used to keep us in dynamic balance. Ninety percent devoted to posture. I guess the Surgism that '€œsetup determines the swing'€ may have just taken on a new meaning for you.

We'€™ve had some really great conversations going on the blog lately about everything from width of stance to getting into the correct posture, the '€œaccordion effect,'€ as I call it. In this video I emphasize that when I give a suggestion on where your feet should be or how much to bend your knees, it will be pretty much the same for everyone, but everyone is slightly different. That'€™s where your brain comes in, you individuality. Increasing or decreasing the positions I talk about so they fit your setup is just fine. Let the 90% go to work for you.

Keep it vertical,

The Surge!
