Proper Swing Thoughts

Sun, 05/01/2011 - 19:25 -- Don Trahan

What should you be thinking about on the driving range? Should they be the same thoughts as when your out on the course?

I think in order to effectively utilize the Surge Swing, you always have to be aware of the elements involved in the swing. For example, to simply go out on the course and only worry about your aim is doing yourself a disservice.

Now, I'm not saying to go out there and be so mechanical that you lose your feel. But, you always have to incorporate what you practice on the range when playing an actual round on the golf course.

Keep it vertical,

The Surge!

Those whole house speaker systems are great. It frees you up to just go about doing things without having to stay put in one room. I had one in my home in Florida. When we buy a home out here, I will put one in. The internet is great for that stuff. Most of our TV cable companies over here have all types of music stations on them. We have like a hundred different type stations to choose from.

Good tip.

Civilization is way over rated anyway pal. If the big cities in the world are what civilization is all about, I will pass on that.

Did they get your power back on yet?

Hope you had a good day.

We did not have a single person get out on either course today. It has been cold and raining and lightning all day. The good part was that I got to come home early. My loving wife had diner ready when I got home. Homemade pot roast, with all kinds of good veggies, sweet glazed carrots and asparagus spears. That was topped off with a hot fudge brownie and vanilla ice cream.

So, I think I got it all in here, current events, golf or in this case non-golf, and the food channel.

Please remember that switching to a new swing is a process. If you watch the videos and study the manual, and work hard at it, it will work for you.

You should look at the video of Surge swinging through his bag. You can also use the search function to look up a recent daily video Surge did on finding the top of the backswing.

Hi TMedley,
As I wanted to have my clubs available for play today, I met John in Sudbury - his shop is in his home. It took about 1 1/2 hours for him to do the club checks, then we drove to a golf course/driving range (not covered) about 15 min from his house. The range fitting took another hour and a half, so it was a pretty long day, with the 2 hour drive each way. We got lucky Saturday on the weather - cloudy but no rain and not overly windy. He says a very windy day messes with the range work.
The club evaluation and fitting was very informative - as I surmised, my clubs were way too long (I'm only 5'1") and not at all matched either to each other or for what I need.
He waited until the end to make comments about my swing (that I wasn't vertical) which in retrospect I wish I had known earlier in the fitting, but then swing thoughts would probably have crept in and really messed things up, so that's probably why he waits until the end.
He will be sending me edited video of my swings on a CD and two demo clubs for me to try, then we will meet again in Mansfield.

Hope you are able to get your fitting scheduled soon. My leagues start this week, and I don't know if that will be a "go" either...Hubby and I played today at GreyHawk in Lagrange and conditions there were surprisingly good, they even allowed carts. Had 3 pars, the rest we won't talk about! :)

My distance off the tee and with irons has improved greatly in the last few weeks after nearly a year.I could always hit it straight but lacked distance using Don's swing. However playing a practice round the other week I had a feel of my right hand going under my left on the downswing and then up to the t finish.I hit the ball really well with this thought and analysed what I was doing in the last couple of holes.I was with the right hand doing what Don calls skimming the stone and I think this created some lag and clubhead speed making the ball go alot further.I tried to get this feeling before but thinking of skimming a stone I think I got too much body movement.Thinking about pushing my right hand under and then up to the t finish seems to have automatically caused the small bump action in my swing.May be wrong but it has worked for me and improved my golf immensely and may be worth a try if you are struggling with the swing.

Kenny,
I'll leave your first inquiry alone and to the more advanced of the group. As to the second, I'm now almost 52 years old and started playing this game at 15. I've had some great contact over the years( but not as much as needed, nor the control I desired) yet I can't recall one swing where I actually saw the club contact the ball. Maybe it happens so fast that I can't see it or maybe it's simply because I'm watching the spot about an inch in front of the ball. So of the two, I wouldn't necessarily worry about the latter.
I'm sure someone else will comment on your post & questions, happy swinging,

gman: I have a short memory, but it seems that a few blogs ago, Doc Griffin mentioned that, "concerning the 3/4 swing, the end (of the 70* turn) comes when the LEFT shoulder stays at the LEFT side of the chin, and NOT UNDER the chin. From there, it's all vertical lift." As to how much vertical lift, there is a drill that Surge introduced a while back. Take your left hand, grasp your right wrist and make the backswing. You can only lift your left arm so far before it touches the left side of you chin. That is the end of the lift in the backswing and your elbows should be parallel to the ground and form the "triangle" we talk about. Hope this makes sense. Maybe others having a better recollection can add a little more light on this one. Anyway, hit 'em straight! R2

Hey TinaB,
I am lifting the entire way to that imaginary point on the toe line where my left arm, the entire shaft, and club head are on the toe line. This point will be a little higher or lower in the back swing for different people. That point is even a little different for Don and DJ. (But in fact DJ's has changed recently).
I even extend the club behind me in pre-shot to that position to get a feel for where it is. When I miss it is almost always because I've missed my mark and gone too far which almost always causes a pull or even a pull hook.
The important thing is that the club has to come back down on or just inside of the toe line in the forward swing or you'll come over the top and slice it.

It is the only successful way I've found to keep me out of the SBG (At least when I do it right). Everything else I tried it just turned my swing into a well documented mess with a whole plethora of problems.

I, on the other hand, love it. I liked the same music when I was a kid but it wasn't on country stations then.
Charlie Daniels, Marshal Tucker Band, Eagles, Dirt Band, Lynard Skynard, Credence Clearwater Revival, all favorites of mine. Along the way I found that the only way I could hear that kind of music was on country radio. Another funny thing happened along the way also. I started to like people way more country that I wouldn't have liked when I was a kid.

A question for Surge. You keep telling us allignment is important. I know you have a couple of lines painted on your backpoarch and you have sticks to give you allignment at the tee. But when I go to the golf course to play a round, I don't have sticks and while recently playing with one of my daughters, she told me my toe line was not in allignment with the target. If I alligned myself with her instruction. The ball flew towards the target. Otherwise hooks and slices. Not really, just not alligned properly. How do we establish the toe line without the aid of parallel sticks?

I have no idea what you mean by our minds. It has been my experience that both men and women tend to get more enjoyment from a stiffer shaft. I however, think It's time for me to go to at least a senior flex. I got my 9-hole round in today and managed a 45, with a couple of pars. I got busy, and forgot to call John, but hopefully I'll make a call tomorrow. I'm hoping the range in Mansfield has a covered place to hit from, so the rain won't matter.

Kenny,

What is probably happening, and it is not necessarily a bad thing, is that when you shift your weight to the left, you get back on your left heel a bit, which allows your left foot to pivot (flare out) as you do the FUS to the T-Finish. As long as your foot is not sliding and widening your stance, you should be fine. How much do you flare your feet during your setup?

Can you be more specific as to which of us dickheads have you all unsorted?

1. Is it the ones who are talking about what damage was done to their homes by the storms?

2. Is it the ones who are talking about how glad we are about that scumbag getting killed?

3. Is it the ones who are talking about what we had for dinner?

4. Is it the ones who are talking about dealing with alignment and doing the bump?

5. Or, is it the ones who never post anything on here, except when they want to whine?

Just wondering. Ok, not really, I don't care which ones of us you are whining about.

Tina, I'm not sure if it was Surge or Doc that give me the insight on what your having trouble with but here is what helped me. I had video'd my swing and noticed I was layed-off at the top of the back swing and slightly in the SBG. From a down the line view, I was near 10:30.
I didn't publish this raw video to youtube but commented on it, just as I have with you. Someone, I think it was Doc (with T, giving me a blog link to match) told me I really needed to feel like I was exaggerating going vertical because while it may feel like I was doing so I was indeed not. So I was crossing the toe-line into the SBG, After a couple of sessions on the range and consciously making what, to me felt like almost outside vertical lifts of my arms and rechecking my swing I found that I was pretty close to where I needed to be and within the parameters of the swing and the good thing, I didn't have to think about it anymore.
Now at the top of the BUS, I have the club set in line with the soft part of my right shoulder.
Hope this helps,
~Boog~

Played yesterday for the first time using Surge swing. I was pleased with my iron play, any problems were more with alignment . My drives werent so good. I think I might not be raising my hands high enough on my backswing , because I was so concerned about a limited turn. How high should the hands be at the top of the backswing, head high ? I think Im stopping at my shoulders . My drives were low and after about 150 yards , seemed to leap left

Tina,

Good tip in Boogm's reply about exaggerating the vertical swing to point where you think
it well over the top. Iv'e videod myself on numerous occaisions and found this out. Also
don't forget about the right elbow at the top of the backswing, it must be parallel with the
left, I even make mine a little higher.

Roy,

It is sort of like Steve said, destruction all around and the center of my little town is safe. These things come from the southwest, straight up the highway. Just before they get to us, they veer either straight east and rip across the south end of town, or veer to the NNE and rip the north end of town. That is what happened this time just after dusk. I actually watched it from 7.5 miles away - no video.

Things are quickly returning to some sense of normalcy for some of us. The response from around the country with assistance has been awesome. The Emergency Response people are unbelievable! Someone mentioned in an earlier post about folks helping each other and that is indeed what is happening around here. When I see what others went through and are going through, I have absolutely nothing to complain about. Although, I thought I gave up shaving with cold water out of a bowl 30 years ago when I took off my uniform for the last time LOL.

Hey everybody.
Civilization has returned to Dekalb county. Well maybe I wouldn't go quite that far since most would say (with no argument from here) that we never were civilized to begin with.
My swing thought on every swing is to get the club head to the toe line (not in front of or past it but as exactly as I can) on the back swing. If I get that successfully accomplished, and I am aligned correctly the rest of the swing is easy. Almost to the point of being inconsequential (small degree of hyperbole).

Kevin McGarrahan's picture

Submitted by Kevin McGarrahan (not verified) on

Good points, Robert. What I have started doing, and it works well for me, is to stand behind the ball, pick my target line, lay the club down between that and where my toe line will be. Then, when I set up parallel left and get ready to pick up the club, I can readily pick out spots on the line from the club to set up to.

Seriously though, it has been shown that the brain only responds to the action words and not to "don't". So all your brain really hears is,'screw this up'. The same is true for,"don't" hit it in the woods or "don't" hit it in the water, etc. You need to be thinking thoughts such as, 'down the middle' or 'in the hole'. Our last thought is often a prophecy so make them positive.
Down the middle,

I have been having 2 problems as of late. The first is my Left foot which keeps flaring out after I swing, more so on my drives No matter how I try it kind of "jumps or slides" to the left. i thought it was a weight transfer thing so I concentrated on shifting more weight to the left side on the downswing, upon impact and the follow through, but this made me feel very off balanced and created other aiming problems.

The other is "not seeing the club impact the ball", so I am closing my eyes or looking away.... any suggestions on either of these two issues?

Not sure what your issue is. I think that the posters on this site are all nice people and I have no problem with any of their post.
I am here for the duration it is the surge swing or bust for me.
Besides I like all the Dickheads that are here they are down to earth people and as far as some of their post not being golf related who cares it makes this site seem a little personable. All golf related questions that get asked seem to get answered.

Maybe that was what she meant but I was just making sure. In the words of the "great",LOL, philosopher Juaquin Andujar, "You never know!"

The courses immediately around here are fine except for electricity.
When we went to play today I spent about an hour between the front nine and the back nine helping the owner of the course try to crank the generator.
They may have power now since we do here at home.

The course we played in Chattanooga had some trees down but that was it.
The course out at Rainsville is probably a different story but I haven't been out there. Same with Trenton Georgia.
