Proper Swing Thoughts

Sun, 05/01/2011 - 19:25 -- Don Trahan

What should you be thinking about on the driving range? Should they be the same thoughts as when your out on the course?

I think in order to effectively utilize the Surge Swing, you always have to be aware of the elements involved in the swing. For example, to simply go out on the course and only worry about your aim is doing yourself a disservice.

Now, I'm not saying to go out there and be so mechanical that you lose your feel. But, you always have to incorporate what you practice on the range when playing an actual round on the golf course.

Keep it vertical,

The Surge!

I don't know what it looks like at impact. I am too busy trying to figure out what happens after impact. Well, that and trying to find another ball in my bag.

In that windy tournament dad and I played in on Friday, I played the whole round with the same ball. Been a while since I was able to do that.

Guess I must be learning something on here.

The fireworks are going off all around us. I guess some folks are celebrating out here.

Good Luck with the new driver.

Hit them looong and straight. But show mercy on the boyfriend.

Then came back and tell us all about it.

The shoulders only turn as much as to get the club to the toe line. From there, it's all lift with the arms but it will still causes the shoulders to turn a few more degrees to reach the 70* point. Actually you are lifting from the very beginning as you are turning to the toe line. The key to remember is that the toe line is not the stopping point of the turn however. It's just the outside of the tree. As you lift and it moves the shoulders just a few more degrees which puts you on the inside part of the tree. The shaft will directly over the soft part of the shoulder which is the perfect spot (12 o'clock).

If i am going to play music in the house, it will most likely be the TV Cable provided Classic Country Station. I too really love it. I wish we had a good radio station for classic country in my area, but none that I'm aware of, other than through Warner Cable TV.

Barry: Sounds like you are close. The Surge teaches that we keep slight outward pressure on our knees, and preload "heavy-right" (for right-handers). We keep both feet firmly on the ground thru the backswing, but when we start the FUS with the "bump", our weight shifts to the front foot (left foot for right-handers). At that moment we need to focus on accelerating our swing thru to the "T" finish. I've found that since everything happens really fast as the FUS takes place, the best thing to do is forget about ball impact, and just let the ball "get in the way" of your swing as you focus on and accelerate to the "T" finish. If the swing is performed correctly, your shoulders, hips and knees will square as they should. One of Don's "Surgisms" is "ON,ON,ON", which just means that with the correct FUS, the club approaches the ball ON the target line, impacts the ball ON the target line, and leaves toward the "T" finsih ON the target line. Hope this helps a little. Keep hitting 'em straight! R2

Hiya Skibill- I know this will sound simplistic, but it does work: Hold your club so that it aims at your target from your intended toe line. Get into position as you hold the club on that line. As you look down at the club in this position make certain your toes are touching its line and your body (especially shoulders) is parallel to the club. Basically you are letting the club act as your inner line when on the practice range. It only takes a second or two and will really help with your set-up, which "determines the motion" ala El Surge.

Hope this works out for you.

Ray Gawlak

The club shouldn't be over the center of your head at any time during the swing. At the top of the back swing it should be over the soft part of your right shoulder (if you are right handed).

The only worrying factor is whilst people are celebrating the death of this tyrant there are 1000's more of them in his wake. So I think it would have been the better option for the powers that be in the USA to have done it a little bit more quietly, instead of gloating about the fact.

Proud to be a loyal ex-serving member of the armed forces and a "Dickhead"! Did it ever cross your anally retentive brain, that the death of the man makes golf [eventually] safer, and events less costly to run. That is Golf Fans and players alike, can enjoy high profile events, without nutjobs blowing them up in the name of whoever.
If you are so tied up in Golf, that an event of Global importance, which affects US ALL is to be reduced to Facebook, might I humbly suggest, that you are in urgent need of more than Golf tuition.

I love my Golf too, but not to the extent that I can idly stand by and listen to a whining individual, who is in need of a reality check. After giving a blanket condemnation of genuine Golf loving people, he doesn't know using and classing them as 'dickheads', and asking teacher to sort them out!

Got the update thanks guys.

To initiate the swing, was always a problem of mine, until I started my "right knee nudge"!
When I changed to Surges then PPGS philosphy and a vertical-limited-3/4 backswing, dynamically balanced, ride a 'skinny horse' posture and stance. I thought with outward pressure on the knees, with splayed feet, that was out. Well, it is almost a quiver or a twitch, but it is part of my going from a still relaxed, dynamic position to that of motion. It doesn't appear to alter anything in the sequence from start to the recoil.

Keep it vertical, long and straight where ever you are.

Dick Lee:

That is the method that Surge teaches. However, I seem to better results with picking a distant target, while standing behind the ball, and visualizing the target line. Then I step up to the ball, parallel to the chosen line, and "do my swing"

The problem that I have with the "near target" concept is in FINDING a suitable object ofr the target. The perfect clover leaf, dropped tee, twig, etc seems to always be about 1/4 " to 1/2 " away from the desired target line. At 150 to 200 yards. this would put you several yards to the side of the desired target.

Keep hitting them STRAIGHT and LONG

Hi all ! I have been a Vertical swinger :-) for a little over a year now and participated pretty much on the old site but just getting started on the new site now. I have had limited to very good success with the swing and plan to keep using it. I also travelled two hours to meet a certified "PPGS" (Oops still allowed to call it that ???? ) fitter but have no results to share about that yet. I see the site has many of the same old students of Don and a few new ones and some of the same old problems with the discussions. Well it's nice to be back and I hope to be able to help myself and others get better and enjoy the game more. I can say that for me adopting the vertical swing has done that.

Tina, Thanks for the info. So far I've sent him some of my clubs for evaluation and nothing since, That was about a month ago, so I'm getting anxious. Being that we have to use a local range at his end, I might just be better off meeting him in Mansfield as he suggested. I'm not sure if that range has a covered area or not. Most in my area do, with mats only under the covered portions. I believe you have excited me to action, and I will give him a call tomorrow. I actually play in three 9-hole leagues, Mon, Tue, Thur, but so far, we have cancelled the first two wks of the Mon and Tue. I have played twice on the Thur league. I took a look at the 15 day forecast on Accu weather, 14 out of the next 15, are calling for some rain each day. I don't know how the weather knows, not only the days I golf, but the time periods of each day. If I even think about playing or practice, the clouds start during dark. This has been one crappy spring, so far. I hope we play tomorrow, but it doesn't look good for now. Thanks for the info.

As you might imagine, we have lots of country stations to chose from out here. My favorite is one that plays only classic country. They play the old stuff. On Sunday mornings they have all the old country gospel music. They even have an old cowboy talk show and they do the old trail working songs.

It is great,

Kenny: Boogm is right on about "seeing the club impact the ball". The Surge teaches that on the FUS we should just let the ball get in the way of our swing and our real focus should be accelerating thru to the "T" finish. On the left foot flaring issue, look at a couple of things: are you just doing a little "bump" to start the FUS, or could you be swaying? Some of my new students think they are just "bumping" when they are actually moving their whole body forward - not a pretty sight and causes all kinds of swing problems. Also, this may seem odd, but do you play in regular "spiked" golf shoes, or just flat-soled shoes? My son-in-law used to play in regular-soled shoes and was having all sorts of swing issues until he got some regular golf shoes. There is a reason for those spikes! lol. One more item you may want to look at is your set-up, or what we call GBSAPS, for Grip, Ball position, Stance, Alignment, Posture and Swing. Each of these needs to be mechanically correct or your swing can be affected. If possible, get a video of your swing and that will tell you volumns about what is really happening. Good luck and let us know how things go. R2

Your posts are ill tempered and bossy. You are not the boss on this site and don't make any rules that pertain to anyone on this blog or myself. Get over yourself, we all have.

We will discuss golf and anything else we feel like talking about. No one asks a golf question that does not get answered. Feel free to skip anything you don't want to read.

This blog is family to those of us who come here every day. We, like all families talk about what ever is going on that day, or in our lives in general.

I will be taking one thought with me today and that is to takeaway smoothly to keep the club face at the correct angle.

Hi Boogm and Steve,
Thanks. I saw my swing yesterday, (had my fitting with Swing Surgeon clubfitter John D from Sunbury, OH) and yes, I was in the SBG. My clubs (no surprise) were too long, and I know this is probably contributing to the difficulty getting vertical. The plethora of mis-hits that Steve mentioned is where I am at and it IS frustrating! The good shots are beautiful, but there's too many stinkers! Your tip about feeling past vertical is one I will try next, along with learning how to use the video function on my camera!
Thanks for the suggestions.

Dragonhead wanted to know what was done with Bin Ladens' body. According to Fox News, it was dumped into the Ocean. What they should have done was wad cut it into small pieces and feed it to pigs (according to muslim beliefs, this would desecrate the body and his soul could not go to Allah). Also take his head and mount it on top of the Washington Monument.

There seems to be some disagreement on how he was actually killed, but that he was in fact killed. I was hoping to wait and hear the President comment on it, but, I think I'll have to hope I can stay awake in bed. He originally was supposed to speak at 10:30 my time, about an hour ago. So who knows when he will actually get to the podium. Good night folks. Say good night Dick.

I approach the shot from well behind the ball. I pick out a spot on the ground about 1' in front of the ball that is in line with my target. I use the line from that spot to the ball as my target line. I then just line up my toe line parallel left of the target line.

It works for me.

Don't get your panties in a bunch Jerry Lou. No golf question or inquiry goes unanswered. Do you honestly mean to tell us, when you go golfing with three friends, you only permit golf talk and forbid anyone to bring up a personal issue, or current news event topic. Your life must be very dull, if that is the case. Try to broaden your field of interests and knowledge a little. You might also want to consider trying to develop some actual interest in someone and something other than yourself. There is a wide world of activity taking place around you, and it has nothing to do with you. Open your mind to new possibilities and discoveries. Others exist and have interests that might not interest you. In closing, just allow us the same courtesy that we are willing to allow you, to discuss other interests. Best wishes to you and yours.

Lay down a club across your toes, and one on your aim line. I often use a tennis shoe lace between two tees to aim down. You can hit balls off the shoelace if you tee up the ball. Use driver tees to anchor the lace.

That's a bit strong and think your post should be removed. I like how this blog is not heavily moderated, but think more moderation is needed to stop posts likes yours and to keep posts relatively on topic. Folk have to remember that this blog is part of Surges website and can bring down the whole purpose it is there, yes lets have light hearted banter and chat but lets not get too heavy, I come here to get away from the world, yes I suppose bury my head in the sand!, but can see that if your world has crashed around your feet that you are going to chat about it as you do get to know people. But so far this off topic talk seems to only lead to flamewars, I suggest any off topic chat is kept at a personel level and not news related, otherwise if we ALL posted a news bulliten everyday it would get hijacked.
See, again I have come here and my chat is golf unrelated!

Normally, if we are right handed we tend to end up lined up too far right.(lefties over do left). What can happen is we pick a line or target and set up, then when we look up there is an optical illusion that we are aimed left so we shuffle almost unconsciously until we think we're set up correctly but we are then aimed right. To prove weather you were miss aligned, do as Surge suggests(many times in other videos and articals), and imediately after your swing, put your club on the ground at your toe and step back and look where you were ACTUALLY lined up.9 times out of 10 it'll be way right. Two suggestions, one combine both Amos and Dick's suggestions. That is, pick a far target and draw it back to a tiny closer target (1 or two feet in front of your ball on the target line. Two, after lining up parallel LEFT of that target line, don't allow your eyes let your feet shuffle. Surge has even said that it help to not look up again, just swing. Trust the allignment you've seen from behind and stick to it. AFTER you swing again drop your club at your feet and presto! you'll see it was now correct MORE often than not :)
Hope that makes sense.
