A little while ago I did a tip on "The Bump" and how important it is to make good solid contact with the ball at impact. Well, as it happens, that inspired our Director of Club Fitting, Lynn Griffin, to go even a little deeper. He wanted to emphasize the third element I touched on...club length.
In this video Lynn gives an excellent demonstration of "The Bump" and what it actually looks like. Lynn's emphasis is on club length, especially the driver. He shows that if the driver is too long it's physically impossible to "bump" which is key to power and distance in the Surge Swing.
Club length also has to do with your ability to consistently hit the sweet spot with the driver. If the shaft is long, it's harder to control and lack of control means the possibility of more errors. Lynn uses his own "8/10 rule." You have to hit the ball in the sweet spot 8 out of 10 times. If that's not the case, check your club. (Of course my personal rule is 10/10, thank goodness Lynn can take some kidding.)
"The Bump" is power. "The Bump" is distance. Don't swing without it.
Keep it vertical,
The Surge!

Seeing how you were playing
Seeing how you were playing into what in other parts of the country would be a straight-line wind storm, Robert, very nice round. Happy to hear your new sticks arrived today, can't wait to hear how they go for you.
ÃÂ As to my day, besides the little knife snafu, it couldn't have been any better. Now like you I eagerly await my new sticks and getting down to business and my 3 year plan. Which Doc told me shouldn't take that long if I continue to practice with the clubs and swingrite.

I knew George & I were looking at different clocks but I was waiting on "that fitter"ÃÂ for clarification.
I usually don't think too
I usually don't think too much about other people's swings because I don't do quite a few things "right" myself. I went out and tried my best to return my hands to the address position at impact and still have a ways to go. Looking at some other swings it seems many of us are swinging our arms too much out with the driver causing us to either pull up, in an attempt to keep the shoulders square, or have them open at impact (which looks much smoother but still isn't quite right).
Just something else to work on.
Check my attempts from today and you'll see that I have a ways to go.
I wouldn't want to hit
I wouldn't want to hit against you in any competition

Cool. That just helps confirm for me that it is good. Thanks.
I don't know if I can explain
I don't know if I can explain this very well, but I think of the bump as the same thing I do in a baseball swing.ÃÂ When swinging a bat at a baseball, I'm standing with my shoulders turned away from the pitcher, and when the ball is coming at me, I kind of step into it to hit it.ÃÂ For me when I'm swinging a golf club, it's kind of the same feeling, except I keep my foot down.ÃÂ (Plus the ball is on the ground and there's no danger of getting hit in the head.)ÃÂ Is that even close to what it is?
Well Doc, you asked for it. I
Well Doc, you asked for it. I hate to say it but the facts are the facts. I made some what I thought were pretty nice swings on 1 just a little while ago and it clicked nicely every time.
I wasn't even intending to do anything like that today but when I got home my wife was out in the front yard with the SwingRite (she was just joking because I had told her that I expected her to swing it every day).
I showed her how it worked and she made some swings on 9 and she did OK but had a little bit early release.
Then I put it on 8 and she was still OK but she had couldn't make it click on 7.
She asked me what I could put it on and make it click and I told her that I did 2 yesterday but it seemed fairly hard. I put it on 2 and made about 5 or 6 swings and it got easier with each swing.
Then I told her that everyone says that 1 is really hard and I moved it to 1. Same as on 2 it seemed like every swing I made it was easier than the swing before, and seemed like the less I TRIED to make it click, as I had done yesterday, the easier it was.
My wife just looked disgusted and said "well that figures" and went back in the house. LOL
ÃÂ Just a normal golf swing like I would hit a three iron for a shot over 230 yards worked very well.
I think it explains why I hit shorter clubs much farther than even the guys that are much longer than I am with a driver. My driver swing is just not as efficient a swing due to the length of the club and having to go through some unwanted and unneeded contortions to make the swing. More and more I'm thinking 43 1/2" or 43" might be what I need for a driver length, and I doubt if I would lose club speed or distance.
Hey Cerveza,Good luck with
Hey Cerveza,
Good luck with the Bar.
I never had to take a test that hard but if you are anything like me the "not knowing if your ready" is the hardest part.
I took the state real estate broker'sÃÂ test one time and had heard all about how most people fail it and not wanting to be one of them I completely over studiedÃÂ expecting it to be a "bear".
When I came out of the test someone asked me if I passed and I said I didn't have a clue.
He said "Well you passed it then. People that walk out thinking it was easy and thinking they passed it are usually the ones that didn't".
He was right. I made 100% on it.
I wouldn't have studied so hard if I had only known. Ha ha.
At least those real estate laws are a limited segment of law. I can't imagine having to expand that to all laws. I don't think I have that many available brain cells.;-)
Hey Lynn, try this test:

Had anÃÂ epiphany today
Had anÃÂ epiphany today after watching Doc show the bump. IÃÂ had a hard time breaking the rotational tendencies, now I can feel that vertical down and up to the T finsh. Finally this game is fun againÃÂ especially from the short grass! Surge it took me a full year but I think i have it now, Thanks
RM:ÃÂ Glad you're liking
RM:ÃÂ Glad you're liking the new "tool".ÃÂ I pretty much stay at a "5" since that is where my timing, tempo and lag feel the most natural/comfortable.ÃÂ If I swing faster my "internal clock" gets all screwed up and bad things happen.ÃÂ ÃÂ Anyway, take care and hit 'em straight!ÃÂ R2
Doc:ÃÂ ÃÂ If you were to
Doc:ÃÂ ÃÂ If you were to shorten a Driver to the 42.5 or 43 inch length, say for someone only 5'-7", how do feel about going with a 210 gram driver head as opposed to the standard 200 gram? ÃÂ This should be as easy to hit as a 3 wood, only with a 460 cc head.

You just gave a short class
You just gave a short class in being a blow hard. One more time, this video is not about how to hit with a long shafted driver. This video is about why, IF YOU WANT TO PERFORM A SWING SURGEON VERTICAL SWING, you cannot do so with a long shafted driver.
People are on this site to learn the Swing Surgeon Swing, which is usable for all clubs to hit pain-free, on target shots if you learn the techniques and don't have equipment that gets in your way. If your only interest is getting your hands around a long shaft, go find a different site. If you're interested in learning about and talking about what is ACTUALLY being taught and discussed here, then please take some time to learn a little about it.
Hope you have a great time on
Hope you have a great time on your travels (by that I mean get a few rounds in at each stop), when are you planning to do that?
Things have been alright here, not so much golf, the weather has been pretty crappy and not so good for golf, unless you like playing from soggy fairways.
Had a bout with the fats for about a month, so was gettin really frustrated with my game, bit better now, but like always...work in progress. A highlight for me recently was my first eagle! It was on a short 300 meter par 4, and in an unlikely fashion too! The hole tees off on a very elevated tee of about 30-40 meters, tee shot was right of the fairway leaving me with about 30 meters to the hole. thought I overcooked the 60* wedge well over the green, but bugger me dead if it didnt drop about a foot from the pin and roll in! high fives all round!
stuff like that is what makes ya love this game eh?

As always thanks for input.
Once I progress in lowering number to consistent "clicks"', I should stay at that number ?
Starting pt cow milking soon to increase swing speed...lol

So true, Steve, if it'll just
So true, Steve, if it'll just go where we want it. I was happy to end the swing session with a couple of good ones that seemed to go where they were intended. Strengthening the right hand will help me out as will continued practice with the swingrite, now that I have the time.
ÃÂ The experience was a blast, even if i was sweating like I was atop the penthouse roof in the powerhouse, lol
Doc, did you take my advice
Doc, did you take my advice and double if not triple your swingrite stock?! Looks like everyones getting one now. I should a bought stock!
No confusion, I knew what you
No confusion, I knew what you were getting at with the chicken wing. I had the same problem for a while with my forward arm. Like you, I have to focus on a full extension of it, at impact, to mirror my address position.

I think what I going to do is play around with the length on my R9 driver itâÂÂs at 45". It has three screw in weight ports. I have a old R7 5w that I bought at a yard sale for 10.00 that is the same way the heaviest weight in the R7 is heavier than theàheaviest weight in the R9 and they are interchangeable. I am going to weigh all the weights out of both of them to see if I have wiggle room that way without having to mess with lead tape. I am going to start at 44" first and see how that works at the range for a while and then maybe go down to 43 1/2 and then to 43àand keep notes of the results knowing that the shaftàwill get a little stiffer. Then go back and discuss doing somethingàshorter with the new driver later.ÃÂ
ÃÂ
I was intending on rebuilding the ping but the smash factor on the new driver head was way higher than the ping which equates toÃÂ more yardage so I could not pass it up.
Plus I have the Ping and APII's sold after I get my Mizunos and new driver back.
I will post my results after I get done playing around.
Hi Craig. Thank you for your
Hi Craig. Thank you for your comments. I am continually trying to improve my technique and I welcome all the supportive comments that we get from all our friends on this site.
As I have said before, this is a work-in-progress and, as in life, we learn something new every day - especially if we are receptive to constructive comments/criticism.
For the record, my comment that Robert F had told me to 'forget about it' was a slight play on wordsÃÂ (English humour) between us earlier.
I have to say that on a few occasions when I have not been particularly thinking about the 'bump', and it has 'just happened', I have really enjoyed the ball strike. I really, really, really want this to happen more frequently !!!!!
Hasta la pronto - as they say in Spain.
Cheers.
Brian

I gave a lob wedge some
I gave a lob wedge some consideration, but, I tend to hit all my irons high, and my SW is higher than most guys lobs already. Also, the Wishon PCF Micro wedges impart some bite as well. There are a lot of second shots which are coming up 15 to 20yds short of rolling onto the front of the green, that I think a 2 hybrid might help with. Maybe!
Roy, Thanks again for your
Roy, Thanks again for your high recomendation of the swingrite. Got down to 5 last night and still felt in rythym. Did it gradually over about 30 swings. Then I switch to a regular club and take another 10 or so swings. Loving it so far and as I said it has improved my grip and iliminated the slice.
what are you doing on line?
what are you doing on line? shouldnt you be at the post office with a parcel to melbourne? lol I kid, I kid.
Im really looking forward to see if this device can straighten me out for good. I figure if it works as good for me as it does others here on the blog, I might actually break that 80 barrier one day!

Looking forward to working with it.

Are you looking at the
Are you looking at the stopped preview image? That's Doc showing what you'd have to do with a longer club to get it back to the ball. Look at about 2:32 in the video to see the demonstration of a SSGS back swing position.

It was very relaxed and laid back.ÃÂ Hey, I'm that kind of guy.ÃÂ He had 3 bottles of water and left one of my towels soaked.ÃÂ LOL
I will say this, and it's repeating what Boog already said, he was as nervous as a new bride.ÃÂ I guess that's what happens when you're in the company of a legend.(now that is funny)(and I didn't say LOL)(saying I didn't say LOL isn't the same as saying LOL is it?)

So you watched the first 10
So you watched the first 10 seconds of that video, rather than watching that Don swings EVERY club that way. That video shows Don Trahan, the Surge--the guy whose swing method is being taught on this site, the guy whose swing method we're concerned with learning--swinging every club in his bag. Understand, we all know that it is correct that if you want to swing a driver with a long shaft, you have to flatten your swing. But that's looking at the proposition backwards. We're here to learn THIS swing method. The Swing Surgeon Golf Swing, which is on a maximum incline vertical plane. In order to do this swing properly, you must have clubs that are the proper length for your body to perform this swing.
Boog,ÃÂ Two thing I wish I
Boog,ÃÂ Two thing I wish I had done more soÃÂ at my fitting were, # 1 take notes. These guys are deep and say lots of great things about club specs and the swing that we hope to remember but don't. Oh you could actually bring a clip board to take your notes on LOL!!! and # 2 take lots of pictures and a side by side with Doc :) These are a golfers memories of a lifetime.
Sounds like you're ready for
Sounds like you're ready for Doc :)
You already have a range
You already have a range finder Robert. You have an android phone. Golf Shot Tracker is a free download that allows you to measure each shot and select which club you hit the shot with. It will then average your shot distances for each club.

You are most welcome. I am very pleased with the set and their performance.
Ha ha! Not much talent here
Ha ha! Not much talent here on my end, except maybe with the putter.;-)
I'm curious about how the new driver works out as far as shaft dynamics so keep us posted.
There are so many things involved that to get it truly correct I am more convinced than ever would take a fitting like you did.
Most people that do it themselves as I have done and others have done might see some benefit, especially trying to swing vertically, but I am very sure we leave a lot of performance in shaft dynamics out of the equation. Just adding back weight isn't the entire answer.
Hopefully Doc will be along
Hopefully Doc will be along shortly to answer the more technical part of your question, but I can tell you from experience that he prefers the 355cc heads over the 460cc heads.
Also, it bears repeating and repeating and repeating that the length of your shaft is principally dependent on your wrist-to-floor measurement, not your height. Height is a factor in estimating lie angle, but it is only important in estimating shaft length in so far as it affects how far your hands hang from the ground.
Robert, it so happened that
Robert, it so happened that the UPS man came into Doc's place as we were finishing up. He was making a delivery and Doc had a pick up as well. I envisioned him coming into the place in about 7-10 days to pick up a few boxes routed to Pinson,Alabama and nearly got the vapors!
As to the clubs and the wife sharing the bed,I'll have to sleep on that one and get back to you in a couple of weeks,LOL

ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ Here's one for Steve Smith:
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ On the par 4 14th hole I pulled my drive well left, hit the cart path and landed in the rough some 226 yards from the tee.ÃÂ I had an excellent lie in the rough, but a medium height tree was blocking the direct path to the green. I told myself, "You can hit a 6 iron over the tree and maybe make the green"ÃÂ Turns out I couldn't (at least not this time) but I did hit the "95% air", just nicked a few leaves and landed about 5 yards short of the green with a hole cut about 5 yards from the front of the green.ÃÂ I looked the situation over, told myself "A little long on this chip is OK -- just be sure to get over the approach apron and on the green" -- Then a Redneck SA moment occured -- the thought "in the hole woild be better though" LOL -- What followed was a perfect pitch/chip - over the ramp, landed about 18 inches on the green and rolled straight into the hole for my only birdy!
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ To add to the enjoyment. the Maintainence Supervisor was making his rounds, and watching me play the hole.ÃÂ His comment was "Just the way you planned to play this hole - right?" with a chuckle,ÃÂ ÃÂ I answered, "Of course -- who says you have to hit fairways and greens to get birdies?" LOL!!
