Dan sent in a question about golf gloves. He's new to the game and wondered if the wear on the glove would tell him if he had a good grip. That started me thinking about what a golf glove can tell us.
In this video I show you three of my gloves. One is really old and pretty dirty. There's slight wear on the heel and thumb. But other than that, there is no wear. Ditto on the second. The third is a new glove and it looks it. All three also show I have a good solid grip.
If your golf glove does show signs of wear, and pretty quickly, then that tells you there is something wrong with your grip. You might be holding the club too lightly or too firmly. The glove will show you if you're holding the club too much in the palm of your hand. It will show if you're letting it turn.
Dan, most golfers do wear gloves. They feel they can grip the club more firmly. That's what I feel. And, yes, it will tell you if you've got a good grip by showing no wear in any one spot.
Keep it vertical,
The Surge!

I picked up an inexpensive Orlimar bag with 14 nicely sized individual slots a while back, but it's a stand bag, and you'd need a cart bag. It's always a tricky process finding the right bag for you.
I'll be interested to see the Jumbo Max grips in person.

There are tons of visual demonstrations in the videos and manual.ÃÂ Have you perhaps looked at those?ÃÂ Also, it's DJ, not TJ.ÃÂ Minor but it is a name and that's pretty special.
Hi Guys,
Hi Guys,
I had a pretty good round today.ÃÂ Started out with a ten on the par five first hole :0)ÃÂ I lost two balls right off the bat, but recovered with a couple of pretty good shots and a one putt.ÃÂ Finished the round with 41 on the back nine and carded 89.ÃÂ Finished up just after 11PM.
My putting was terrific for most of the round and included a couple of anacondas of over thirty feet.
I hit my driver and irons with authority all day long.ÃÂ The biggest contributing factor to my improvement was getting my weight over my right haunch during my setup.
Well, I better get some sleep.ÃÂ I have a dentist appointment tomorrow morning to have a root canal in preparation for a post and crown on a broken tooth.ÃÂ Big Fun!
Hit'em Long and Straight,
Bob
P.S.ÃÂ Good Luck on Your move Dick!

Hey Robert,
I was starting to wonder if you were lost out in the tundra. ;-)
Glad your irons are getting straightened back out. Always something isn't it?
It seems like I am having a little spell where I am missing more "easy" putts than I am used to missing but I am rolling the ball as well as I ever did.
Just slightly misreading putts....Just enough to lip it out.
Oh well that's golf!
If I roll the ball exactly over the spot I want, with a perfect roll, that's all I can do because the only other option is to get smarter,,,, and that's NOT going to happen. LOL

I put that grip on a test club for guys.ÃÂ It's a pretty neat grip.ÃÂ You'll need to get a larger diameter bag to accommodate them all. LOL LOL

Hi Steve,
Hi Steve,
I'll be playing in the Midnight Sun Tournament on Saturday. I'm looking forward to having a great time in a really fun tourney.
I agree with you on the spine angle issue. I try to exaggerate sticking my butt out during the setup, and then relaxing that part of my setup a bit before hitting the shot. This helps to keep me in good posture, especially late in the round when I might be getting a bit tired or lazy.
Bob
I am interested in starting
I am interested in starting another branch of questions in regard to gloves. Brand, type or style, and cost. I have mentioned in the past that I recently started wearing a glove on both hands to omit all of the band-aids and tape being applied to my arthritic right hand. The testing process is going well, and I prefer it over all of the tape and band-aids on the ware spots. I will now be paying twice what I used to for gloves.
Do any of you have a preferred glove or price range. I know people who feel as strongly about which glove they wear as which ball they play, or which grips they use on their clubs.
Last year I discovered two good quality gloves at Wal-Mart for $5.00, one is a Wilson brand synthetic, and the other is a Club Champ synthetic. Both grips have the extra padding layer over the palm area, where mine tend to wear first. Unfortunately they have nothing in that price range for the right hand. ÃÂ I used to get all my gloves through Master Grip on line, so I went back to them for the right hand gloves and found their DynaGrip cabretta on sale 2 for $10.99. At that price I bought a dozen which should last for several years.
What say the rest of you in regards to the actual glove brands and price ranges. I'm sure some prefer synthetic and others cabretta or other leathers.
Robert, I have owned Datrek
Robert, I have owned Datrek bags in the past. They are good quality made bags, but not cheap.

Robert, I'll check them out. I presently use the Jumbo Chamois, but have the vibration dampening inserts. Make sure you ask your fitter about them. The extra cost is only a couple bucks per club, but they really help with the vibration.ÃÂ
Oh, I thought he might mean
Oh, I thought he might mean TJ Hooker. You know, Shatner's been doing all sorts of stuff these days. ;-)

Hey Robert,
Glad you had a good day......Or I don't know if ya'll call 11:00 day or night. Ha ha!
Maybe you played the first hole in the "day" slot, and the rest in the "night" slot. So maybe you had a REALLY good night. LOL
Hey something that I've been working on is when pre-loading heavy right making sure the spine stays at a good angle and straight and doesn't slump any. I noticed that I hit the ball better if I pay attention to that and it's easy for me to let my back slump over if I'm not paying attention. It doesn't take much to throw things off a little.
Oh, on the video watching
Oh, on the video watching question, did you try the "Click Here" above for the flash player to see if that would work better where you are?
Surge, thanks for that info
Surge, thanks for that info on our glove(s), in my case it's 2 because I need to protect my hands for my job. Anyhow as you said holding our club too much in the palm and not firm enough can cause more wear. CONGRATULATIONS goes out to DJ for a good tournament this week. Alot of great players missed the cut on a tough golf course. DJ's T15 finish will help him move up but more importantly is a good sign his game is coming around again. He really putted well and over all his stats showed he's working hard and seeing some positive results.
Looks good for the second half of the season.
Good luck in that tournament

I recently started using a glove and, after some trial and error, found that FootJoy SofJoys in Cadet Medium size work best for me. I got my first one at the pro shop for $14.99 and I bought 2 on sale at Sports Authority for $10 each. Since I'm relatively new to using gloves, I have no idea how long they will last. I have roughly 65 hours of wear on the first glove and maybe 25 hours on each of the other two. So far, none are showing any signs of wear. Once I put my glove on, I usually keep it on until I am done playing; I even wear it while putting.
I may try wearing two gloves - the backs of my hands are not tanning evenly LOL.

i just read a book by jack nivklaus,"golfÃÂ my way"- the thing i was most immpressed by was his approach to practice.at the range,he stresses the same wsing fom 2 irons-thru 9 irons. (if you can hit a 2 or 3 iron). what i likes was his statement that by alternating a long iron with a short iron ehen warming up(i.e., start with a 9,go to a 3,then an 8,then a 4,,etc,) it make your swing "uniform" .your comment(s), please.

Dragonhead, Did you notice if the cotton gloves seemed to shrink and also stick to your skin when wet. I am remembering an old Sienfield episode, where George talked the N.Y.Yankee's into switching their uniforms from a polyester to cotton fabric. He claimed the cotton would breath better and the team would stay cooler in the heat. All was well, until it rained and the uniforms began to shrink and stick to their bodies.
I am thinking about getting some of the Wonder gloves from Master Grip mentioned by another yesterday for wet play. I already wear other Master Grip gloves and I have a great deal of confidence in their products.
I hope your move is going well. Do you have an actual date when the physical move will take place. You probably have mentioned it before, but, it is easy for me to forget dates, (among other things) as I age.ÃÂ
Cheers, I hope this is correct.

Hey Campy,
I always start any practice with long irons because I hit them so much more consistent than a shorter iron. Plus the mental let down that comes from starting off a pre-round practice with a really bad short iron shot (if it happens) is worse than the mental let down of hit a really bad 3 or 4 iron (if that happens).
P.S. I've said that on the blog before but I promise I won't get all bent out of shape if someone makes fun of me for saying it again, or even if someone "likes" their comment. LOL

Hi TM Will get back to you on
Hi TM Will get back to you on the cotton gloves shrinking or not, when I start to use them in NZ. Arrive there all being well [Chilean volcanic ash causing cancelled flights in Australia/New Zealand] 7days from now. Golf will not be on the agenda immediately. Not being 'homeless' is priority one.
Initial finding on the cotton gloves was impressive. Thin and snug, hardly fealt as though I had anything on at all, they were so comfortable.Even though the grip on the driver was soaked, the gloves kept a secure hold on the club on every swing. That was sufficient for me at the time. I won't forget an update when settled. As it is 'Winter' [if you can call it that hahahaha in NZ]and usually wet, I am sure that they will be used sooner rather than later.
Busy with last minute dotting of 'i's and crossing of 't's etc. The experience of moving from here gives a whole new meaning to Red tape. [ ÃÂ Ripoff Every Departee ; - ] ie had to send my clubs in the shippingÃÂ container, as, even though within our weight allowance, it would have cost as much as they were worth to have them as accompanied baggage by air! Figure that out.Like when my old Ping Zings arrived from NZ by courier, I was taxed several times what they wereÃÂ worth before customs would release them.
All in all, things outside our control, we just get on with them.Whatever it takes is our mantra. Would be a good one for Surge's concept swing.
The Chinese you wrote is perfectly correct [what programme did you use for the characters, if it is not too rude to ask?] God Bless You too my friend, and all others in the Surge Nation.
Swinging coming along steadily, still getting over the ministrations of the [Christian]Chinese Traditional Medical Dr! but swinging pain free and become more 'fluid' by the day : - ) Slowly, slowly catchee monkey as the say.
Will keep an eye on the site[had a few problems the past three or four days,ie, click on the video and got advertising from China telecom instead etc, etc] up until the actual move date. With luck will be on 'reverse cycle' [Dick Lee will enlighten you on that term, I am sure,if you don't know it already]for the US OPEN from tomorrow,2130 our time[13hrs ahead of Oklahoma]ÃÂ watching it live online! An interesting Open in prospect. Now who will win, hahaha!? What better way to pass the last days here ; - )
Thanks for all your tips and assistance, keep on keeping on TMedley, hit it long and straight. Will just go and 'skip a rock or several.
God Bless All

Hello Surge Nation guys and
Hello Surge Nation guys and girls, I've been having re-gripping issues that has been frustrating the heck out of me. ÃÂ Even when using the Swing Rite I find that when I line up the logo at 12 o'clock in my grip sometimes it will move to the 1 o'clock position, i.e. opening the face. ÃÂ I also do get wear on the heel pad of my glove. ÃÂ I know its probably because I'm not maintaining a uniform grip pressure throughout the swing but is there anything else that I may be overlooking. ÃÂ The thing thats baffling me most is I don't have a clue as to where in the swing I'm actually re-gripping. ÃÂ Regards, Craig
P.S. I did see some footage of DJ on the weekend, it was a long bunker shot on the last hole.

ÃÂ Robert, Checked out the Jumbo Max. Their price is comparable to the Winn oversize. Which I used on my old clubs before switching to the softer and much less expensive Jumbo Chamois. Do you know what your size spec actually is. The Jumbo Chamois is only 1/8 over, but the price, for re-griping is only about $3.00ea through Ebay and I do them myself.
Since my clubs were designed with the Chamois weight considered, I probably will not look for any changes, but, would like to see/feel the Jumbo Max.ÃÂ ÃÂ

Surge, Your lesson on Gloves
Surge,
Your lesson on Gloves was really good.ÃÂ Last summer, when we were having those 90 to 100 degree days, I found out that I was having a hard time controling my golf club due to sweating in the hands area.ÃÂ Soon my leather gloves would get wet and everything seemed to want to slip causing me a lot of bad shots.ÃÂ A friend told me about the Wonder Glove that is made by MG Golf.ÃÂ This glove is thin, light weight, and machine washable...but the best thing about it is the wetter it gets the better it plays.ÃÂ I love a leather glove in the cooler weather like most other golfers but when the temperature passes the 90 degree mark, my first choice is MG Golf's Wonder Glove.ÃÂ The price is really great too.ÃÂ This year so far we have had several days above 90 degrees and my game has been much better because of the Wonder Glove.ÃÂ Check them out,ÃÂ You can find them online at www.mggolf.comÃÂ look under the catagory of GLOVES at the top of the page.ÃÂ
NO, I don't have any connection with this company.ÃÂ I just like this product.ÃÂ ÃÂ

Good luck with the move on Thursday. I will think of you while playing my Thursday 27. God bless you and yours.
Hey Bob,
Hey Bob,
You definitely at least need to take the time to come up at the end of September to watch DJ at the Justin Timberlake and we can probably arrange a Robertx3 tee time somewhere (there are one or two courses available around town). It's only a 4 or 5 hour drive from southern California (maybe more if you hit traffic getting across to the 15 though--I remember once taking 9 hours to get back here from Santa Monica, but the first 5 were just trying to get across LA).
All of the products from
All of the products from Master Grip are good quality. They stand behind their products.

Kubined, Your approach to portch question seems honest hearted an well intended. I would say that #1 we are very blessed that Surge offers this free advice from his back portch. Do you have the very affordable pald for versions of his teachings? That is where the complete lessons on grass are found. If you buy those you'll be able to view his and DJ's swings any and every day. His heart is fine now. He is out giving lessons and 1-3 day golf clinics nearly every week. He also spends many week days with his son at PGA events. Doing these tips from his backyard are convenient for him and we are thankful. We can hope that he continues to share his generous golf wisdom for years to come. I wish you good golfing.
thanks for sharing your golf
thanks for sharing your golf wear, but you did not answer the question... what can a golf glove tell us? If you see wear here, you're doing this, if you see this wear you're doing that, you need to be more specific, your story told us nothing, other then YOU'RE wearing your gloves correctly. I have a wear at the bottom of my glove, heal as you said, but please be specific, what is the heal, is my terminology the same as your's, please don't assume, I am new to the game and your instructional videos sometimes don't take that new person to golf into account. thanks
