Best Way to Judge Hand Position at Setup

Thu, 06/02/2011 - 13:50 -- Don Trahan

There'€™s been a good deal of discussion on the blog about positioning the arms in addition to over-reaching. One comment reminded me of the old golf days when I was new at teaching. It had to do with positioning the arms correctly in the setup and your fist.

Remember, I draw a straight line from the top thumb knuckle of my left hand up to my chin to get into a better setup and have the proper reach to the ball. Gill came up with the old notion that he had heard the proper distance was a fist away from your thigh.

This kind of gets into my '€œmyths and misconceptions'€ about the golf swing. The fist usually isn'€™t big enough, but then how big is your fist? Draw the line from thumb knuckle to chin. Then you'€™ll know you'€™re right.

Keep it vertical,

The Surge!

Roger,
Believe me I'm not taking anything away from that swing either. I actually can hit the ball really well like that. Did it many times when I was just playing golf and searching for what kind of swing I really wanted to use. A friend of mine was using that swing and just for fun I would do it joking around with him that I could hit the ball better with his (my friend's) swing than he could.
I used to hit the ball fat a lot back then but never hit a fat shot with the arms extended like that.

Maybe you would be better served by using all the time you're wasting reposting the same comment to go watch the videos and read the manual, then take that knowledge to the range.

As to your comments about several of the other bloggers, I think we all feel the same way.
"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but the words of a fool will never hurt me."

Why is it so hard for some of you guys to figure out that your poor disposition doesn't bother any of us?

They say that the definition of insanity is to continue to do the same thing over and over again expecting a different result.  Perhaps you should reflect on that for a few moments, and see if it applies to you.

Just thinking out loud,

Sounds like it's coming along nicely. Make a few of those putts and you'll be rolling.;-)

Edit: Bad news for my game. They put us on 9 hours a day AND Saturdays at work. Just great in this 96 degree heat.
So long golf game. :-(

Surge Nation.

I just received an e-mail from our oldest son.  He is safe and sound in Kuwait.  It looks like he will be stuck there for a few days due to some major sandstorms.

I feel better now knowing that he's not downrange.  He said he should be home in a couple more days.

I will keep you posted,

Thanks pal.  I will be glad when this is done.  I am like a cat, I hate it when a piece of furniture gets moved, let alone my whole house.

All my holes in one came within about a 3 year period.  I was really into the game.  I was playing 18 holes twice a week and 9 holes 3 or 4 times a week.  I was playing nearly every day.  That was back before my injuries and I was consistently shooting in the lower 70s with a lot of sub par rounds.  I thought I was going to reach my goal of playing in some regional competitions.  Then on Jan 13, 1993, along came a drunk driver and ended that dream, and almost my life.

I don't even care if I ever get back to that level.  I am just tickled to be able to play without pain.  I know that if I can do that and keep playing 3-5 times a week, the consistency will come.

You and Steve have really got me looking at this swing a lot differently in the last couple of weeks.  I am trying a lot of new things.  The ball is going farther, and the consistency is coming around.  Dad and I are playing in the morning.  I will let you know how it goes.

Jimbo, I suggest you do as many others with hand ailments and pain have done, including myself. Have everything changed to graphite shafts and jumbo cushioned grips. I use the jumbo chamois, graphite shafts, and also have vibration dampening inserts in the butt end of all my shafts. I am a right handed golfer, but have also recently started wearing a glove on both hands which helps with the right hand soreness. All of these together have made a major reduction in my hand pain and soreness, during and after as much as 36-holes at a time.  Good luck

Carroll,
The back porch is a great place for instruction. The Top gave me instruction on the range but he gave me many more on the back porch and by the time he was finished I knew exactly what he was wanting me to learn. I learned his swing and his thoughts and all about real life.
So these moments with Surge are almost like a piece of home, except I can enjoy them while sitting both during and after. :)
The video issues, sadly, are yours as covered in the other replies.

Great report and great round. Sounds like you are enjoying your new clubs. Was
this the first rounds you played with them?

I had my APII’s rebuilt by Mr. Weitzel at Conquest Custom Golf
last October here in Cincinnati and enjoyed them until my house / basement was broke into this past January when we were out of town they took my clubs and a bunch of tools and some other items in all about10,000.00 dollars worth.

I am playing a set of irons Mizuno JPX 800 tours that belong
to my neighbor he has a to have hip surgery and said he doubts the he will ever
play again. He wants to trade them for a riding mower that I have but I am undecided
on what I am going to do. They are marked as regular flex KBS tour shafts the
clubs that I had I was fitted to were KBS tour stiff for the weight tweaked to a weak stiff.

I like these Mizuno’s a lot especially the feel of these shafts and over all feel. I am tore on this shaft flex thing and am going to talk to him this weekend I am playing in a tournament this weekend and we are paired in the same group. I will have to decide if I want to trade for the Mizuno’s and have them rebuilt or have him make a set from scratch.

The nice thing is I do not have to go through another fitting.

It is one of those psychological gratification things - Most people want someone to witness their accomplishments, even if it is a stroke of luck. For most people, if you accomplish a hole in one and no one sees it happen, then few people will believe you did it.

Great to hear the game is coming along. Seems like the new clubs were the answer. I am set up for Saturday morning for my fitting, and started to get a little pumped. Been trying to get there (Lansing MI area) with good weather for a month. As you know the weather has been nasty.
I am certainly hoping for some improvements in my game as well.

I will post some highlights on Sunday. Hopefully RM will be telling us his adventures by then too. His fitting was yesterday, I believe.

Coach

As I told Robert, that was when I was playing a lot of golf and at a level I won't ever reach again.

I was in a group of 4 total strangers playing together because the starter joined us all up.  Somewhere on the back 9, one of the guys hit a hole in one.  Like the guy in your story he had looked down to get his T and did not see it go in.  He looked back up when we all started hollering.  He thought we were carrying on because his ball had rolled off the back of the green.  He got all pissed off at us.  He would not believe us until we got down to the green.  Then he was really pissed off.  He said "Only damn hole in one of my life, and I missed it."

You just never know.

I suppose now, I am as bad as Hitler too, for simply stating what seems to be facts for the record. Are you really saying the man is as bad as Hitler in your opinion, simply because he ruffled your delicate feathers a bit. If so, seek help, and do it quickly. There are some significant similarities between Moe Norman's swing and Surge's, particularly the shortened back swing with limited turn, the high finish near the left ear, and the focus on nipping the ball off the grass rather than thinking about hitting down.

In terms of this specific question, Surge also talks often about keeping the arms away from the chest so they can swing freely, so no conflict. It's just not what Surge was talking about here.

You can only use a usual device of golf (a club) to check your alignment or read a line prior to making a stroke, not an unusual device (alignment stick, string-bob, etc), so I'm pretty sure, as Dick H is, that it would not be legal to use such a thing in the course of a stipulated round (tournament or, in fact, any round you post for handicap).

A while back Surge gave one of his golf school reports and mentioned that a few of the students had criss-crossed aligment issues. Later that week I ran into a golf instructor and asked him how to verify that I am not criss-crossed. He told me to stand up after I stepped into the ball and come down into the ball in one motion.

While the motion he showed me isn't identical what surge tells us to do, most likely it has the same effect. By standing up straight we square or hips and shoulders to our feet (which hopefully is parallel to the target line) and helps us to come down into the ball with everything in line and ready to go.

Surge Nation.

This post has been approved and cleared by the golf blog police.

This is my after action report for today.

I got to the course an hour and a half before our tee time.  I warmed up for 20 minutes, did some chipping and putting, and then hit a bucket of balls at the range.

Dad's posse and I teed off on the North course at 10:30 AM.

I started off great.  On the first five holes, I had one birdie, one bogey, and three pars.  I ended up shooting a 43 on the front nine, and the 43 on the back nine.  Overall, I shot pretty well today but I did end up having one hole on each side that caused me a problem.  Other than those two holes, the rest of the game went well.  To take a page from our friend Amos, I hit 12/14 fairways.  I had four 1 putts, twelve 2 putts, and one dreaded 3 putt.  I hate 3 putts.  So I ended up with 31 putts.

After dad and his posse went home to lick their wounds, I took a break and had a snack.  It was just too pretty out there today for me to go home.  I decided to play the South course.  I didn't bother to keep score.  I just worked on shots from two or three different places on each hole.  I played all 18 holes and had a great time.  I'm going to try to play 18 holes tomorrow after my doctors appointment.

The good news is that I played 36 holes of golf today.  The great news is I played 36 holes today with absolutely no pain.  First time I've done that in over two months.  God, I love this swing.

Well, that's it from the back patio.  And, I'll be talking to you later.  Had to borrow that from Surge.

I have made two aces and both were odd.

The first was when playing with three members at a club I worked at. One of them had never seen one and he paid for the drinks afterwards. The group later went out for dinner and a fine time had by all. Never paid a penny.

The second was on a hole that gave away a brand new set of Ping irons. I did not have enough spare change for the buy in ticket. When the ball rolled in I thought the assistant hosting the contest was going to pee on himself. He went crazy.

Surge - One thing I do to get the top left thumb knuckle under the chin to mouth is: I took a piece of string about as long as from my mouth to the knuckle. I tied a a round weight to it (such as a bolt washer). I then put the end of the string in my mouth and let the weighted end hang freely down to the knuckle. Adjust your hand position so the knuckle is under the washer in the right position. Dick H

I don't think there is anything wrong with saying the same thing on different blogs.
I've seen comments that were really worth reading that happened to be placed on a blog just as the new one was coming out and therefore went virtually unnoticed.
I probably say the same thing multiple times myself but mostly because I didn't remember saying it.
I've seen some posts that I thought were so good that they should be permanently embedded in the blogs so they are already in each and every one.
Doc Griffin's description of the golf swing is such a post. Funny how many people either didn't see them (at least two of them) or ignored them. (Scratch my head).

BTW. CervezaFria is one of the most respected people that visit this site. It would be a huge mistake on your part labeling him negatively from a "like" that he clicked on. He's had plenty of chances to jump into the gutter with some of the rest of us on some topics but he seems to always be the one with the cooler head, and takes the high road.

This only a thought Robert. What if? "You had your piece of string or whatever, between your teeth and let it go once you were satisfied with set up, letting it fall to the ground?"
Would that still violate Rule 14-3 which Kevin so kindly put there for our edification?

I am not advocating doing so during play. I only used mine in practice. My question follows on from previous discussions on alignment,ie, Checking with a clubshaft along your toes and then removing it prior to the swing commencing being OK.

Keep it Vertical and long wherever you are. Dragonhead, Dalian,China

Great video Surge. This answered many misguided thoughts about where the hands should be. The thought I was trying to convey, which I didn't do effectively at all, was that when I address the ball, I line up the vertical scoring line on the toe of the club with the back of the ball. I do this when I'm standing tall with no knee flex. Then, when I settle in to the address position in the athletic position that you mention, I actually move the club head forward a touch so now the ball is in the middle of the club face and my hands are now further away than the "fist width" that I mentioned previously. I know this may sound like a long process to settle in, but it's only a moment or so, and I made it a part of my routine. Once I settle in, I fire away. Thanks again for taking the time to address this issue and clearing up any misconceptions about the subject. Keep the videos coming, they're first class and very insightful.
Regards,
Gil

I'm fairly certain that the only time I'll hit a hole in one will be on some crazy, stupid bet (like hitting a 100 yard green with a 1 iron). That's how life seems to work for me. My favorite was bowling one time when I left a 3-10 split. I bet one of my friends a case of beer that I could put the ball between them without hitting either pin. He still owes me that beer, too.

I am not sure who is worse the thieves or the insurance company. I have been fighting with them for 3 months on a settlement which we finally came to a agreement. The irons I had 2000.00 in them. The tools were another thing I bought these back in the early 80's and had sockets and wrenches that went up to 2 1/2 " plus impact tools that I bought when I worked construction I ran a slip form concrete paver and need the tools for working on it they were all snap on's an had 5000.00 in them back then I would be afraid to have to buy all them again I bet they would be close to 10,0000 to replace them.

What is the worst thing a golfer can suffer (would be golfer that is) than getting a hole in one and having nobody to witness it? I'll tell you, I know the owner of our little 9 hole course and because I did some work for him a while back free of charge He lets me play free when ever I want ( Its a pay and play course) But, and this is the worst bit, I have osteoporosis mainly affecting my spine and can hardly walk from the first tee to the green leave alone all nine holes, but thanks to Surge I enjoy what I can manage.
