There's been a good deal of discussion on the blog about positioning the arms in addition to over-reaching. One comment reminded me of the old golf days when I was new at teaching. It had to do with positioning the arms correctly in the setup and your fist.
Remember, I draw a straight line from the top thumb knuckle of my left hand up to my chin to get into a better setup and have the proper reach to the ball. Gill came up with the old notion that he had heard the proper distance was a fist away from your thigh.
This kind of gets into my 'myths and misconceptions' about the golf swing. The fist usually isn't big enough, but then how big is your fist? Draw the line from thumb knuckle to chin. Then you'll know you're right.
Keep it vertical,

No offense intended guys but
No offense intended guys but I think ya'll are "reaching" as much as Moe Norman's set up to find similarities in his swing and Don's.
Moe is bent over more at the waist with very little knee bend. He stretches out his arms to become almost completely, and in some cases completely in line with the shaft at address. Then uses this plane created by the shaft and the arms to, in effect, have one long "shaft" consisting of the actual shaft and the arms.
This (virtual) long shaft is a main power source for his swing with (I'll give this one to ya'll) a limited turn.
He swings everything on the same plane back, and yes through the ball. He only brings his hands and the club back close to the head at the very end of the back swing. Halfway to three quarters into the follow through he is still on a pretty flat plane.
You can draw a line from the club head at address up through the shaft and the arms and the back swing and the forward swing follow this path back and through.
Don is not bent over at the waist as much because his arms are hanging down. This creates an angle between the arms and the shaft (not present in Moe's swing) that must be returned to in the forward swing returning from vertical, making Don's swing a two plane swing.
The power source for Don's swing to make up for the severe extension in Moe's swing is the mechanics in bringing the arms down vertically on the toe line. To me the speed and power of these mechanics more than make up for (and surpass) Moe's extension on a less powerful plane.
So what I see is not much similarities. I see two, limited turn and little or no divot.
All of the Moe followers don't take what I see personal. I only see what I see.;-)

If a ball falls in the cup
If a ball falls in the cup and know one is there to hear it, does it make a noise?ÃÂ NO, Because it never happened. I always liked the commercial where the kid is out playing by himself. He makes a hole in one, looks around and sees no one. All of a sudden a grounds person drives up in a cart, and says nice shot kid, you know what that means. The next scene shows them at a Coke/Pepsi machine with the kid buying.
Half a dozen is pretty good in my book. I have hit the pin several times and have been within inches on others, but nothing yet. I have only been present to see two in my foursome at various times. One was such a bad miss hit, the guy turned away in disgust, and didn't see it. He thought we were ragging on him when we said it went in the cup. He wouldn't believe us until he got to the green and saw it there. The other was a well hit shot that had pin written all over it from the time it left the club face.
In regards to the social aspect of golf and life in general. A very wise individual once said, "It is not good for man to be alone"

Steve, there wasn't another
Steve, there wasn't another reply open in the section above where you told your drafting ball teams strategy. I coached the boys for several years and I remember back when Matt, the now second oldest, was in T-ball and I became the Coach by default. The guy that drafted the team picked Matt in his first spot and it went down hill from there. We lost every game but one and I was always looking for something positive to say to the kids after the game. I used up most of the good game, had fun cliches and the like when I looked around after one game and told the kids, " They may have beaten us, but our Momma's are prettier!" They all went to nodding their heads, Momma's and Daddies began smiling and I never bought another coke or hot dog for the rest of the season!
I am having the same problem,
I am having the same problem, I solve the problem by keeping knee flex, (you are probably standing up to have a bigger turn) and beginning the swing with a hip turn, not sway, and lifting the club as I turn. ÃÂ Timing seems to be better. ÃÂ I am longer and straighter.
Robert,
Robert,
Rule 14-3 prohibits the use of any artificial device:
"Except as provided in the Rules, during a stipulated round the player must not use any artificial device or unusual equipment, or use any equipment in an unusual manner:
a. That might assist him in making a stroke or in his play; orb. For the purpose of gauging or measuring distance or conditions that might affect his play; orc. That might assist him in gripping the club, except that:
(i) plain gloves may be worn;
(ii) resin, powder and drying or moisturizing agents may be used; and
(iii) a towel or handkerchief may be wrapped around the grip"
As I read it, using that technique might violate 14-3a, but I think that it might be okay as long as you remove the string and put it away while you make the stroke. In my mind, doing so would be akin to taking your stance, laying your club down to check your alignment, retaking the stance, and picking the club up. I believe you can use anything you like to get aligned, but must remove it prior to initiating the swing.

You sure do like to see your words in print.ÃÂ I think you are funny.ÃÂ
You obviously don't know how to use the edit function, or the spell check function, or how to figure out if a sentence is structured properly.ÃÂ If you golf like you write, that is sad.
The only problem with using a regional insult on someone is that if that person is not from your region, it means nothing to them.ÃÂ Calling me a bell means nothing to me.ÃÂ Well, I hear a ringing in my ears when I read your posts.ÃÂ Is that what you were talking about.
Your personal attacks on the regulars on this blog mean nothing to any of us.
Run along now, the big people have real stuff to talk about.
I am putting you back under the bridge with the other trolls who show up on here and try to start crap.
Drop back in and let us know when you get a happy face.

I am happy to report a good
I am happy to report a good day of golf. Played 27 holes and every tee shot was either in the fairway or just slightly into the light rough. I had more GIRs today, then all of last year combined. I also had more birdie putts as a result. Unfortunately I missed them all, some by fractions high and low, and some an inch or two short but at the heart. I did make several pars though and managed 41/42/41, All three could have been 39s or less IF the putts were falling. I also hit several drives longer than my longest of last year. The longest today was 230yds. My old driver averaged 180 and 210 wasÃÂ my longest with it all of last year. I was using impact tape on the driver today and making adjustments. The 230 drive was still 1" off of the sweet spot, so I have hopes for some 250s or better when the timing, tempo, speed, and sweet spot all come together. It is still a work in progress, but the work is becoming much more enjoyable. I am still amazed at the ease of my two hybrids in reaching the long par 4s in two. I was on greens today in regulation, that I haven't been on for years in two. I was also well inside the 100yd markers of all par 5s in two, with a short pitch or chip to the greens. Today was the most golf fun I have had for years, as far as scoring goes. If any of you are considering getting fit for clubs, DO IT NOW.
Better golf is just a fit away. This stuff is for real people. Thank you Doc for making me see the importance of being fit. Thank you John for fitting me and making my clubs. For once, golf was more fun than frustration. My only bad swings/strokes were on the putting surface, and those by mere fractions.
Thanks. I was a little
Thanks. I was a little skeptical going into all of this, but I am a firm believer now. Better golf IS INDEED just a fit away. If it can help a hack like me, it can help anyone. I heard an awful lot of Nice Shot comments today. It has been about one week now and I am ready to sent a good progress report to my fitter John.
I've only ever seen a hole-in
I've only ever seen a hole-in-one once. My oldest brother hit one. So to say you've personally hit 6, that's damn good in my book. Back when I was in college, every round for a month I hit the flag on one particular par 3 at the course I played twice a week (and sometimes 3 times) but the ball never dropped in. I even once wrapped it in the flag and it fell 3" from the hole. C'est la vie.
Best of luck on the move, Dick.
