Hitting High on the Clubface?

Sat, 05/28/2011 - 19:25 -- Don Trahan

Ouch. Ball marks high on the clubface will tell you instantly you'€™ve got a problem. You are obviously not hitting the ball in the sweet spot and, most likely, you'€™re hitting pop ups all over the place. But have no fear, the cure is pretty simple.

The first obvious clue is that you'€™re teeing the ball too high. That'€™s simple enough to fix. There are some golfers that swear teeing it high gives them a better advantage off the tee. Some say teeing it low is a big help. Bottom line, ball and sweet spot must meet at impact. Don'€™t complicate it.

Ball position is another easy fix. If you'€™re teeing up too far ahead, you'€™re probably lunging for the ball, moving forward before you even get to the ball!

Then there'€™s alignment. If you'€™re aligned too far left (or right for lefties) you'€™re going to be coming over the top and struggling to get to the ball.

Tee height, ball position, alignment: check out those three to stop hitting from the top of the clubface.

Keep it vertical,

The Surge!

Blame Steve Jobs for being so hard-headed when it comes to flash.  I own an iPad and two Macbooks myself.  Although the iPad is my wifes :)

Gil:  Thanks for the great reply!  I wish I knew where the video was in last year's archives -  it was truely amazing to see what the Surge can do with the golf ball.  Anyway, I'm 100% with you in that we need to find what works best for each of us and stick with it.  Take care and keep hitting 'em straight!  R2

Thanks Robert, I thought it was about right and it felt good, I hope it is another piece in the jigsaw puzzle and will help with the bannana shots with the driver a little!
Looking forward to hitting some balls and putting it to the test, hopefully tommorrow!

 Hi,

Sorry to say but hate the new video format which seems to stream extremely slowly compared to the YouTube format. Please change back or at least give us the original as an alternative.

Grip,1
I am reading the manual again and think my grip hasn't been quite right but now is comfortable. I think my left hand pad was too far over to the left side so basically my lifeline on my left hand was over the centre of my club grip so didn't assist fully in lifting the club thus causing me to role/flip the wrist over.

2
The problem now though is as the left pad is more on top of the grip, I then have to role the soft part at the bottom of the thumb over to the right which now feels like a strong grip and a very different feeling to what I have been used to so is taking a few attempts at squaring the club face to hand/grip. Is the pad directly on top or slightly left, in the manual I get the impression on top.
Doing it this way seems to make lifting the club easier but feels strange as I am not used to it.
I have not tried this hitting a ball, just practicing swings in the garden. So before I go and change my grip your views would be welcome.
Thanks Keith

It would be great if we could recover them, as it represents a tremendous amount of knowledge and insight.  I know Tech Crew has put it out to Rhig1 that we'd be interested in his help if he's willing and able to provide it.  Hopefully he comes back to the blog soon and sees it!

Like Robert, I watched it yesterday when it was posted on youtube and had no problems with it. Today with this format, it started immediately but paused for about a second to buffer then ran out in its entirety. I am using firefox as my browser as well.

I haven't posted much lately, because of health reasons. All is much better now. Just want to brag on Surge a little. Took a lesson from Greg MacDonell about two weeks ago. Last weekend I came in third in my flight for the senior clib champion tournament.
Yesterday I had a hole in one on a tough par three. I won a $100.00 credit for the eating establishments here. There were 24 players in the group and the bar ended up with all my money.

Surge,
This question is off topic but I would like to know if the hands should be perpendicular to the ground on ALL shots viz. pitching, chipping and bunker shots as well as driving and other full swings.

Thanks

I have just had a fair few practice swings with grip 2 and got to say it feels good, I feel more in control and after only a few swings can feel the left hand last three fingers and under arm muscles activating! I am still feeling them as I write! So I must have activated them, just need to strengthen them now as I obviously haven't been using them as much as I thought I was.

Been away from my computer for the last couple of days, so I just looked at this posting, and was I surprised to see that the Surge was addressing my question! I'm very impressed with his diligence and his concern about his students, and obviously, that he reads the blog. Kudos to the Surge and to all the other individuals who took time to post a suggestion on how to approach my problem. I didn't know I was joining a family when I started using this site several years ago, but I am proud to be a part of it.

Ha ha! I am close to one of the smallest metro areas in the US. I learned pretty early on after getting a computer that I might as well be patient.

Awesome outing, Mike. The thought process you went through was really good. I hope you can do it every time you practice or play. Good luck!

I was going to say that as best I could figure out your description, Grip 2 sounded about right. You can exercise those fingers and those muscles by swinging the club held just by them. Don't try to hit a ball that way, but it's good exercise for the fingers and arms.

I am willing to do this. Please have someone call me tomorrow so we can discuss this. You have my phone number. If not email me and give me a phone number to call. Surge has done so much for all of us, so maybe I can give a little back.

We will still use the YouTube as well.  This player/delivery method actually plays at a higher quality and better for the majority of people.  We now have our own content delivery network to push video around the world without being banned or blocked like YouTube can be.

In the future I will put a link a the bottom to view the youtube version.  As with everything on the internet: your locations, network speed, computer, other applications you are running, etc. all factor into video playing as the new video player is true streaming video.  If you notice you can hop around in the video at will now, you don't have to wait for it to buffer.  Therefore, if you have a internet connection being share by other people (say in your house) then that can impact the video streaming to your browser.  Like I said, there are hundreds of variables when it comes to playing video over the internet.

It's your computer and the browser you use. Firefox plus an updated(clean) system and you'll run faster. Mine takes about 5 seconds at the most. I have a computer wiz step son (in house) that helps. Find someone young to look at your system.

 Steve,

Thanks a lot for that image. I was a submarine pitcher in my high school days and hit all my longer clubs better back then. I would never have connected the two together.

Hi Surge,
Still hitting my irons great, straight or slight fade, but recently my driver is fading way too much and sometimes a nasty slice. Video shows that I'm not in SBG, but I'm till coning over the top and I can't stop it. Any drills to get this straightened out?
thanks,

Great advice Surge however the issue of tee height wasn't addressed as I thought you might. I was having an awful time with my driver until I started using tees with graduated height marks on it. I played around with different heights until I found the perfect tee height for me and my swing.
It made all the difference in the world and now I approach the use of my driver with a hell of a lot more confidence, which breeds more confidence. This aspect of the use of proper tee heights doesn't get touched upon very much but it can make a huge difference. By the way, I addressed this same issue with my fairway woods, which I use off the tee on shorter holes and these too were a real difference maker. I'd suggest to anyone to take some time to examine the tee heights of your woods and what works best for them. As we're all aware of, the toughest distance to conquer is the 5 inches between our ears, and this facet of the game is very worthwhile. Thanks again for info Surge. Also, love the wardrobe.

Robert,
All I'm saying is that if a grip that isn't "perfect" is what works for you and doing what is "perfect" isn't working, go with what is working (at least on the course).
More than likely there is an underlying problem that you are correcting by rotating the grip and it would not only be fine, but advisable  in practice to fix that underlying cause and then be able to return to a more "perfect" grip.

BTW. It's pretty funny that we are on this topic because my wife and I just went and played 9 holes and I  used a different approach with the driver than I had been using and found it necessary to strengthen my grip a little after I saw on hole one that it might cause a push.
After that I hit some of the longest and straightest drives that I have hit in two years.
The "different approach" isn't even much but it was actually amazing the difference it made in the smoothness of the swing and also the club speed.
All I really did different was instead of thinking of a sidearm motion like skipping a rock (which works great on my irons) I used a motion much more like a submarine pitcher (see Dan Quisenberry) . It's funny but as soon as I did it (actually last night) it felt exactly like I used to swing 2 or 3 years ago when I really could hit a driver well but didn't have a clue how I was doing it.
I don't know for sure what it looks like but it feels as if I have much more lag, drops inside the slot at the start of the down swing (maybe too much?) but is accelerating through the impact area much, much more.
I'm going to try to get back out to the course after while and try it some more.
