At one of our golf schools, a student had the Surge Swing down pretty well. In the mitt, up the tree, good T-Finish. But he was lacking one important part: power. Watching him swing was like watching the Surge Swing in slow motion. He was getting half the distance he could get. I was pretty sure I knew the problem, but I let him tell me.
I asked him what he was most focused on during the swing. 'Impact,' he told me. He was focusing on making sure his clubhead was square at impact. And that was his problem.
Impact happens in one half of one thousandth of a second. In the Surge Swing, if your toes, knees, hips, torso, shoulders and eyes are parallel left of your aiming line, and you're toe up in the backswing and forward swing, your palms remain perpendicular to the ground throughout the swing. That means you'll be square at impact every time.
Impact happens. You can't see it. So just swing and you'll be square.
Keep in vertical,
The Surge!

ÃÂ I hold the Federal government at least partly to blame for that attitude.ÃÂ Reason: they take our tax dollars, create something like FEMA (and others) for disaster relief.ÃÂ These creates two attitudes :1) Let them take care of it and 2) the sinking feeling that if I send them a dollar, about .10 of it will get to the folks that need it, The rest goes to the beauracy.

Gotta tell you Surge...
Gotta tell you Surge....everyàvideo lesson you give is really good...but I believe this is one of the best so far. I played a fantastic round of golf last Thursday (74) and was back playing on a course I was a member at a few years ago. On several holes I hit longer drives than I ever did in the four or five years I was a member there. And the three things that constantly strikes me is that Iôm using less effort, Iôm putting a lot less stress on my entire body and above all, I only have to focus on the back swing and follow through (T-finish) and the rest (impact zone)àautomatically takes care of itself, just as you point out in the lesson above. Thanks again / Nick

T: Just wanted to "second" your feelings about the Swing Tech. I've set mine up on a 4X4 post, and it really does work! Like you said, it is very well made. I've tried a couple of things to make a sliding portable adjustment bracket but so far, nothing substantial enough for a full 100% swing. But, I'm getting close! Stay tuned. And the SwingRite is one great learning tool, too! R2

Until I consistently break 80 and or start hitting my drives 25-30 yards longer it's foolish to hit off the further back tees anyway. Not fun! Thanks, Robert. It is not obvious with the jeans I am wearing, but my thighs are at the same angle as my arms at set-up. If I try to get much more knee bend than that, I tend to dip way down and hit every shot fat - like 6 inches behind the ball. So, I try to stand up a bit straighter than most.
Steve,
Steve,
You are spot on about Palms Perpendicular. When I first encountered the Surge swing concept, it is the one thing that convinced me that Surge was on to something different. My first reaction was that was physically impossible. But then when I slowly went through the motions I realized it was what my arms wanted to do naturally as they rotated through an arc. Then with club in hand over a tile floor I began to see and feel what "release" was all about for the first time in 30 years and untold numbers of golf lessons.
Set up on a tile floor with your feet on one of the grout lines (the toe line), and the face of the club square to the target line near another grout line with both palms PERPENDICULAR to the ground. Without swinging or moving your hands backward, rotate your arms 90 degrees so that the back of your glove hand is now pointing away from you instead of at the target, all the while keeping your palms perpendicular to the ground. You will find that the toe of the club is UP and is now directly above the grout line that is your toe line. Slowly reverse your arm rotation without moving your hands but still keeping your palms perpendicular to the ground so that the club head is toe up on the forward side of your swing. Do this slowly so that you don't hit the floor and damage the tile. Again the club head will end up directly above your target line. But what you will see is that the clubhead moves from your toe line on the backswing OUTWARD to the target line where the ball would be, then back in to the toe line. All of this happens automatically without you moving or manipulating your hands at all. The club head creates the proper inside-out path without trying to manipulate it as I had done in the past and is so ingrained by the instructors of the rotational swing. Once this light bulb came on, I realized that the vertical swing taught by Surge would result in more consistent results as there was no need to manipulate the club. When you combine the normal motion of your hands backward and upward with the natural rotation of your arms, the result is a consistent golf swing. Focusing on keeping the palms perpendicular to the ground THROUGHOUT the swing, allows you to make the swing as fast (or as slow) as you want to, knowing that the ball just gets in the way of the clubhead as it automatically moves inside-out at contact.

I noticed today in my own swing, that if I tried to keep watching the ball until almost impact, it kept my lower body and my head more still. This had me getting to a much better T-finish andÃÂ was giving me much better ball striking.

I'm not even any good at golf (funny that I picked up a sport at which I'm not very good) but with even the parts of this swing that I have been able to get down the results are actually amazing, especially for distance.
If it gets better I won't know what to do. LOL
I just wish more people understood the back swing and the start of the FUS. Many say they do, but they don't. If they did they would be amazed at the distances they would be able to hit the ball with little effort and just as straight or straighter than they are now.
Two distance killers:
1. Being able to draw a straight line from the club head at address to it's position at the top.
2. Thinking the tree doesn't have two sides.

I think it is every bit as
I think it is every bit as important in golf as in baseball and much more often ignored in golf. It's really, really, hard to shoot a good score and work on mechanics at the same time.
BTW. I saw several of David Toms' swings in this tournament that looked very dissimilar to the others. Why? Because he was trying to hit a golf shot and win a tournament, not trying to make a swing video.
All we can do is practice the best swings we can make and then go play the game. They may not all be exactly what we practiced but hopefully the mechanics will hold together well enough to not be overly concerned about them while on the course.
The best thing to me about the path of the Surge Swing is that it seems to hold up even under unusual circumstances, like unusual stances and lies. (Once you really understand whats really going on in the swing). And the power you can generate is almost limitless. I just can't wait until I get my driver situation ironed out because all of the other clubs really can't be described in a believable way.
How much more simple could it be? I mean palms perpendicular to the ground throughout the swing. Ask any other student of any other swing where the club or the hands or the wrist are at a given point in the swing and there is no way they could even answer the question other than on the swing plane. The problem with the swing plane is that it is impossible to know exactly where it is at different points. Is it 45* or 48* and how would you know during a swing. The same question asked of a Surge student is one simple answer. Palms perpendicular, no matter where in the swing it is.

George,
George,
Can you make a video of your swing and post it on YouTube? I would like to see how you know that, "You must have a flat leftÃÂ wrist and a bent right wrist at impact and a foot beyond and then the wristsÃÂ rehinge." Like Surge says, that happens too fast for someone to actually know you are doing it. I do agree with the flat left wrist and maintaining it through the swing, but the only way to determine that you have achieved that is from your finish position and the flight of the ball.
Impact is not a position. It is a microsecond (roughly) in the motion of the club. The Forward-Up-Swing (FUS) is one continuous motion from the top of the backswing to the T-Finish. There is no possible way to stop at the exact instant that impact begins or ends to check the position (yes, the ball stays in contact with the club face for a very, very, very short period of time). Thinking about that "fundamental," as you call it, causes far more problems for golfers than it fixes. I know this because I fell prey to it for quite awhile.

Funny how many of us think we should be able to shoot a 65 on that course and how many of us NEVER do. LOL

ÃÂ ÃÂ BOY wa today busy!!
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ played 18 in the morning - then went in for my yearly physical - and home for my daily PT walk -- about a mile on mixed terrain with 5 lb ankle weights on each leg. I am going to "fix" my left ankle -- one way or the other!
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ Good news from the Doctor -- after blood pressure, oxygen check and EKG, etcÃÂ -- "Amos you have the heart of a teenager!" -- and the general health of one many years younger.ÃÂ So apparently playing a lot of golf - even from cart - IS good for ones health!
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ I tried out the new Brigestone xFIXx tofay for the first time. While 18 holes is not really conclusive, my initial impression is that it is a TreoSoft with a new name. May be a couple of longer on the driver, about 1/4 to 1/2 a clubÃÂ longer on the irons, but with less "stopping power" on the green.ÃÂ Also longer on the short shots -- chipping and putting -- I was chippng about 5 feet longer than expected all day long -- putting about 2 to 3 farther than exprcted too.ÃÂ That may be just me -- or maybe an adjustment is indicated.
ÃÂ ÃÂ score: 49 + 42ÃÂ = 91ÃÂ ÃÂ I wasn't really palying for score today -- mostly making obsevations an notes on the xFIXx.ÃÂ
ÃÂ ÃÂ I hit the "rocking chair" position for Monday morning tee times - -the early birds were about 5 or 6 holes out when I was at the first tee -- and nobody behind me when I got to # 6. Allowed me to play balls on several holes, although my scores reflect the first ball played.ÃÂ I managed to get around in jsut under 3 hours - and I did not feel rushed at all -- in fact I took two or 3 "five minute breaks" in the shade near a couple of tees on the back nine.
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ As to todays game -- I was "just a little bit off" -- only hit 6 fairways and one green. The good news - most of the missed fariways were the "good miss" with a good line to the green.
3 one putts, 1 three putts for 34 total putts used. OUCH!ÃÂ ButÃÂ my highlight of the day -- a 20 foot "par saving putt" on # 17.ÃÂ You just never know when Lightning will strike!!
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ Saw Steve Smith's comment regrading "no easy courses"ÃÂ and I heartily agree. Our course features a "reverse Amen corner" -- 12 thru 15 are definitely the easiest holes on the course -- IF you get your tee shot in the right position. - two short 4 pars, on short 3 par(ove water) and a longest, but straight away 3 par.ÃÂ It is for sure the part of the course to go into full attack mode.

I agree on the xFIXxx balls. I got a dozen on sale and they do go that little bit farther with less spin. Bridgestone even says that they are a redesign of the Treosoft, which I was looking for since you all were talking about them. I had been playing e6's, but I like the xFIXxx better - not sure why yet. Maybe because my misses are better and I can still move it a bit, although it is harder for me to hit a draw with it than the e6. Just my weird swing :-{)

Don,
Don,
One thing that can help quite a bit, if you don't already have them, is to get a set of alignment sticks. Inconsistency in alignment causes a great deal of problems. By using the sticks, you can get yourself set up better and develop more consistency. I used to have a problem with my distance from the ball and the position of the ball in my stance until I started using them. I had thought I was setting up the same way every time. When I used the sticks, I saw how wrong I was. The best set-up is no good if the alignment is off, and vice-versa. Hope this helps.

What needs to be mentioned
What needs to be mentioned more often is the position of your hands at impact and after impact. If you reach this postion you will reach your goal of solid impact.WhatÃÂ postion is this:You must have a flat leftÃÂ wrist and a bent right wrist at impact and a foot beyond and then the wristsÃÂ rehinge.Thats it.Follow what Surge is saying but there is no escaping this fundemental. If you ignore it you will flip and breakdown the circle you want which is an in line condition of your left arm with the golf shaft.ÃÂ
