Impact Happens: Forget About It

Sun, 05/22/2011 - 15:46 -- Don Trahan

At one of our golf schools, a student had the Surge Swing down pretty well. In the mitt, up the tree, good T-Finish. But he was lacking one important part: power. Watching him swing was like watching the Surge Swing in slow motion. He was getting half the distance he could get. I was pretty sure I knew the problem, but I let him tell me.

I asked him what he was most focused on during the swing. '€œImpact,'€ he told me. He was focusing on making sure his clubhead was square at impact. And that was his problem.

Impact happens in one half of one thousandth of a second. In the Surge Swing, if your toes, knees, hips, torso, shoulders and eyes are parallel left of your aiming line, and you'€™re toe up in the backswing and forward swing, your palms remain perpendicular to the ground throughout the swing. That means you'€™ll be square at impact every time.

Impact happens. You can'€™t see it. So just swing and you'€™ll be square.

Keep in vertical,

The Surge!

I'll be sure to make the time to get out, as well. We'll have at least a threesome.

Dick,

My wife and daughters buy the plastic gardening stakes of various sizes, so I just borrowed 3 of them. If you look closely at my video, you can see them (I left the white labels on) - $1.98 each at Wal-Mart. They come in lengths from 18 inches to 6 feet. Mine are 30 inches.

It seems to be working okay now on my end.  Refresh your page and see if it comes back for you.

Before you get to this point though surely you need to have the swing ingrained so you don't have many swing thoughts, I feel I am getting to this point now after 9 months but at first my head was full of allsorts swing /set up thoughts!

Dick,

I don't use mine very often, but I take them to the park with me sometimes and the family uses them for a game that we just made up.  We also like to use Homer buckets as targets.  If a ball goes in the bucket, you are rewarded with a beer.

I'm gonna head out and play a quick 18 at Tanglewood.  You folks have a great evening, and keep the path to the storm cellar clear.

Absolutely Dick. We'll have to get it on film and photo. Wish you and many others could join us. The only thing about it is the week of July 11th will be about 105, all things being normal. So hopefully we'll get an early tee time.Either way it'll be a blast. Been blogging with Amos on the old and new Surge site for three years.Surge stalworth who loves golf and has a hell of a short game. Don't be modest Amos. Met Robert F a few weeks ago at the driving range. Nice guy (as we all know). Hopefully we will all(as many of the Surge Nation as possible) meet each other at Surge sponsered tournament later this year.

Whew!

I just thought you guys were  giving me the cold shoulder.  Glad to hear that it's a technical problem, and I didn't say something to make everyone angry with me.

Steve
I just went to the weather channel website and found the clip you referred to.  The reporter's reaction put a human face on it.  We tend to think of these thing in numbers that we hear reported and it takes personal stories and interviews with those that lived through it to hammer home the human loss.

It's true that...Faith is only faith when that's all you have left to hold onto.

Well, we knew you had the SPIRIT of a 17 year-old. Good to hear that your doctor agrees.

Went out for a quick nine saturday. the swing is coming around . What I did notice was that while I thought i was properly aligned to the target , I was only half way there. My feet and knees were fine , but I noticed that my right shoulder  would naturally hang  out more to the right, stick out if you will. When I moved my right shoulder back a bit, I noticed much straighter and solid hits . This is something I overlooked for years. So I guess when we say the setup determines the motion , think not just about your feet and knees , but also the shoulders. Once set up, turn the shoulders, head still, and let it fly.
