Golf School, Day 3: Body Movement Meter Test

Fri, 05/20/2011 - 14:22 -- Don Trahan

The Surge and Derek Hardy finished off the final day of the Swing Surgeon golf school at Golden Bear Training Center in Carrollton, Texas with a discussion on how much the students improved. They joked about having to take away the range ball bucket from two students in the final hour because they wouldn'€™t have stopped, they were hitting the ball so well. After three intense days of instruction they were still filled with energy and pain free. Their ages? 74 and 76.

Both Don and Derek agreed that the biggest problem every student faced was excess body movement like folding the left knee in which, in turn, made them drop their shoulders. Don brought up his '€œBody Movement Meter Test.'€ He asked students to think of a meter and, on a scale of 1-9 (9 standing for a great deal of movement), where they were before the school and after the school. The results were dramatic. The Surge Swing'€™s signature '€œwide knees'€ in the setup and throughout the backswing keeps the lower body still. And since there'€™s no big rotational turn, even the upper body has less movement. The students said their movement was cut in half thanks to what they learned.

Following DJ update, a rough stretch of putting on the back was just helped by his holing out his bunker shot on 17 for 0 putts on that green. One over on the day, two under on the tournament heading to 18.

I refuse to wish bad luck or scoring on anyone, BUT, Toms is starting to have problems. I feel bad for Toms, because I really like him, but, Who knows?????????? If a couple of the others have problems as well, anything is possible.

Really good video, especially for us guys who think more is better.

Part of the strength of SSGS are the affiliations. Derek Hardy is one of the best instructors on the planet. Simplicity is a trademark, and the western U.S. is in good hands. So, he and Don are spot on with this video: LESS is more. Keep it simple.Ejb, a video of your swing may be most enlightening. "Is that REALLY my swing? !I had no idea...." was my response. I had the good fortune of good video and an instructor who first started by quieting down my lower body. Your wrist question is a good one,
and hopefully someone can get a closer look.

John, Check your system, the sound is fine at my end at 1/2 volume. If you are using a lap top, that is a common complaint, due to the small internal speakers.

Surge warns us often to be careful about the tips we see in magazines and on the golf channel, or even watching the people we are playing a round with.  It does not take much to put the wrong swing thoughts in our heads.

If we see it, we are tempted to try it,

Steve: Thats funny!!! My son-in-law went to Idaho today to do some fishing and stopped on the way home and bought three tickets. NONE of the numbers were on any of his, either LOL,LOL. Small world. Maybe next time! R2

Steve:  I got these numbers in a Fortune Cookie at Panda Express yesterday (really).  I'd have to drive to Idaho to buy a lotto ticket, so I don't need them.   Maybe they will work for you:  3, 24, 41, 42, 47 and 55.  Good luck and get your ticket before Saturday at 6 pm. R2

I felt bad for Toms last week, he's a good guy.  Gotta give him credit for the way he's come back this week.  He is one of those guys you have to root for.  Would I feel bad if DJ beat him by a stroke?  ;0)

Surge,

I was at the range with our High School golf coach yesterday.  I asked him about the vertical swing that Don Trahan teaches.  I told him I like the idea of keeping the club going down the line longer in the hitting zone and I like how high I can hit the ball with this swing.  He told me he believes we should use the big muscles when we swing and the rotational swing is the way to go.  He also said you don't want to hit the ball too high because the wind will blow it all over.  How do you answer people like him?

Hi Surge,
I am always amazed that you continue to come up with a topic that is right on. I am a high handicapper and have been following your swing for nearly 2 years now, but I continue to go to the weekly golf clinic at my club, mainly for the social interaction with the other ladies. I just filter out the "bad" advice from the really nice (cute) young pro and focus on your swing. Yesterday, we were working on chipping and pitching. I was able to groove my stroke so that I was hitting the target fairly consistently. The pro walks over and tells me I am using too much arms and to swing my hips through earlier. Like a dope, I listened to him, and my swing broke down trying to move my hips and calm down my arms. I think this will be my last clinic.Deb

Looking back at my last 10 or 12 score/note cards, I seem to have a "Jerry reed" golf game -- "When I'm Hot, I'm Hot - when I'm Not, I'm Not" . That is I shoot 4 or 5 rounds in the 80 - 85 range, followed by 4 or 5 in the 88-95 territory.

The high rounds seem to be a function of 1) an errant tee shot (not neccesarily the Driver) 2)  a failed "get out of jail" recovery or 3) and "off day" with the short game.

Keep hitting them STRAIGHT and SHORT

T: A couple of the guys in our foresome play the Treosofts and really like 'em. I tried them but can't hit them as well as the Bridgestone e5. I also tried the Noodle Easy Distance and the Nike Power Distance Soft, but still hit the e5 the best. But my swing speed is really slow, right at 75 mph. Let me know when you try the xFIXx; I'd like to get your input on it and I may give it a try too. R2

After putting those numbers on a public blog it would be interesting to see how many people go play those numbers. LOL
Don't you need 7 numbers? Or is it 5? You can tell I'm a big lottery player.

Practicing the setup and swing motions in front of a full-length mirror can help you ingrain the balanced, stable stance and swing without excess lower body movement.

As for "back on the net," fortunately Surge was never gone, but because of the rulings of an arbitration judge he was limited in his ability to contact his old subscribers. Glad you found your way home, MW.

 Hey Jack,
I can only tell you what I would say. I would say that I can bring my hands straight down from their position at the top, on the toe line faster than he can turn his body with the big muscles. We are talking about speed, not pushing a truck out of the mud.

Then I would tell him that I can hit the ball as low as I want to hit it with this swing the same way that I would with any other swing. By letting the hands lead the club head more at impact.

Then I would show him why the left arm coming straight down along the toe line from it's position at the top on the toe line is a much more powerful move than pulling the arm from behind the body toward the ball.

Then I would tell him that I am still using every muscle that he is using, just in a more limited (but not less powerful) way than he is. Just more efficiently than he is, and with much less stress on the back.

Then I would pull out a three iron and ask if he would like to have a little contest on who could hit it the farthest and straightest.

It is getting the balance I think that is key, even though the swing seems quiet in terms of body movement, there is movement. I took the wide knees, quiet lower half, limited turn, vertical etc all to the extreme so movement was basically all arms with very little turn and all lift. Now we know we can't swing a club with just the arms and very little turn with really good results.

If you look at slow motions of Don and DJ there is a lot going on, they just make it look so smooth and effortless.
One thing that is key I have found is the transition from the top of the backswing to the bump, I am finding it the most difficult aspect. Over do it or over force it and you are all over the place.

 Amos,
I didn't play very well today. Just too tired to get anything going. It was like I would summon up the energy to hit a good shot and make a birdie and then coast along with a couple of bogies to follow it up. Missed a lot of putts that I should have made. One was an eagle putt from 3 feet. (Ouch!)
My team played well enough to almost win back the cost of the round so all was not lost.
For the "last day" I would have thought I would have played a little better.
One of the guys on my team probably cost me a few strokes because he just would not shut up when the rest of us were lined up and ready to hit our putts. He always had to say something like "make sure you get it there", or "it breaks a little more than you think" right as I started my backstroke. (Hope he doesn't end up on my team again).

Guys like Steve Smith and others are far better at explaining the swing than I.  However, in my simplistic way this may help, because I have the same trouble from time to time.  If I concentrate on a proper rotation of the wrists during my back swing I tend to not allow the club-head to drop behind the toe line.  When I forget to do that I tend to cock the wrist (an old nasty habit), then its anyone's guess where the ball is going to go.  Hope that helps somehow.

Just to also add I had only been learning golf for 1 month when I took up the Surge swing(been 9 months now), so I didn't have any movement or golf swing feeling at all. So a rotational swing meant nothing to me, I don't know if that helped me or hindered me as mostly what Surge preaches is to rain in the big turn rotational swinger.

I know I would be the last one any of you would expect to hear this from at this time of night.  I am hitting the rack.  I have to get up early in the morning.  I have an all day class with the state inspectors assn.  I will hopefully learn a lot.  More importantly, I will get the 8 hours of CEU I need to renew my state inspector's license.  It will be an all day affair.

The great news is that if the Rapture does happen at 1800 hours, I will have my credits by then.  That will mean I can keep my license current in Heaven.  If any of you that make it up there need a home or mold inspection just call me.  I am set up over on cloud 9 west.  For those of you who are still here after the Rapture, you can call my competitors.  They will probably still be down here too.

Could not help myself,

Hope everyone who is getting to play tomorrow has a great round.  I will catch up with you all when I get home.

Till He returns,
Dick
