Golf School, Day 3: Body Movement Meter Test

Fri, 05/20/2011 - 14:22 -- Don Trahan

The Surge and Derek Hardy finished off the final day of the Swing Surgeon golf school at Golden Bear Training Center in Carrollton, Texas with a discussion on how much the students improved. They joked about having to take away the range ball bucket from two students in the final hour because they wouldn'€™t have stopped, they were hitting the ball so well. After three intense days of instruction they were still filled with energy and pain free. Their ages? 74 and 76.

Both Don and Derek agreed that the biggest problem every student faced was excess body movement like folding the left knee in which, in turn, made them drop their shoulders. Don brought up his '€œBody Movement Meter Test.'€ He asked students to think of a meter and, on a scale of 1-9 (9 standing for a great deal of movement), where they were before the school and after the school. The results were dramatic. The Surge Swing'€™s signature '€œwide knees'€ in the setup and throughout the backswing keeps the lower body still. And since there'€™s no big rotational turn, even the upper body has less movement. The students said their movement was cut in half thanks to what they learned.

I tried the Treosoft and have better feel with e5s.  I've also tried Noodle Easy Distance and it plays about the same as the e5 for me and currently at a better price. My clubhead speed is slightly higher than yours and with the new driver maybe low 80s. My distance seems to be about the same for the e5 or Noodleand they react about the same around the green.

My drill sergeant at Fort Knox (a maniac like me) guaranteed us that we wouldn't get more than two hours of sleep at any time during basic training.
Most of the guys thought that was going to be rough but I just thought "hey, just like home".
Then he set about proving that he was a man of his word. When other instructors would ask who our drill sergeant was when we said his name they would always shake their head and say "I feel sorry for you".
I always thought they should have seen my football coach if they thought he was rough.

Robert, it was a bumpy back 9 but that bunker shot on 17, has to have lifted his confidence for tomorrow's round. I had a telephone call right before then and got back to the shot-tracker and let out  a cheer in front of the class when I saw that he holed that one.I'm sure it'll make tonight's highlight reel or it had better, lol

Using the definition you just provided, I guess my golf swing would not qualify as that, since the different parts don't work together or compliment each other and there is nothing harmonious about it.

I feel your disqus pain.  For the past few days everytime I go to the RSS feed all 25 posts are exactly the same with 25 different names attached to the post.  I like the e5s, but I get about the same results with the Noodle + Easy Distance.  Golf Galaxy is running a special, 2 dozen for 25.00.  I won a dozen Nike Vapor Speed in a drawing there one night that claim to be soft, but not great results for me and they were a bit pricey.  I'm alternating rounds with the e5 and then the Noodle.  If I see anything that stands out I'll let you know.

 Amos,
Usually for me it is really easy to predict what kind of game I'll have. It is all based on how many days it's been since I worked.
The day after work (like today was) I can usually claw my way around and sometimes have a decent score as long as I can putt. Today I really had nothing to fall back on. I wasn't even good at the mental game. Made some mistakes on chips and flops that shouldn't be made.
When faced with the decision whether to hit a flop shot or some other type of chip it has to be a committed decision.
Twice today I hit a half-hearted flop shot with terrible results. I forgot a motto that my son and I try to adhere to. "The closer you are to the hole the more aggressive you should be."
It's easy to fall into playing golf just the opposite of that by getting closer to the green or to the hole and trying to play it too safe from fear of messing it up.
When I have my best mental game I am not afraid to hit any of my shots, and not afraid to commit to them fully.
Tomorrow is another day though and I'll probably go play and try to redeem myself. Not having an idiot around costing me my concentration should be worth at least 5 strokes and having another day since working should be good for another 5 which would put me at 67. Hmmm. Why not?

 Hello All,

I'm usually just hitting my tee shot on the tenth hole at about 10:30 pm.  Usually finish up at about 11:40 when playing on the par 3 course.  If I tee off before 9:30, I can finish nine holes on the regular course by about 11:45if I'm playing alone.  Still time to go to the range for awhile before the sun sets.

Well, Dad, My daughter,Kimberly and I made the trip to Clam Gulch for razor clams today.  It was a bit disappointing, due to the small size of the clams.  We quit after about an hour and a half, and headed back home.  We'll clean what we got, and have them for supper tomorrow night.

I play in a skins match tomorrow, so I better get a good meal in me. and head to bed by dark, (about 12:30am  :0)

Yak at you all later,
Bob

I only really have one problem. I just can't seem to ever win the lottery. Of course I have never bought a ticket but something told me a long time ago that if the time was right a voice would whisper the winning numbers to me so I would know to go and buy a ticket.......Still waiting on the voice.

I was going to answer under your post about the Swing Tech aid, but for some reason, none of your comments during that time frame are showing up on the dashboard page, and no replies were left on the blog page. I also did not receive the usual email notification about your reply. Over night Gremlins I guess.  I have a big gap that goes from comments 1hr ago, to 9hrs ago for the next, so any comments posted between 1hr and 9hrs ago are not showing up on my page. I wonder what happened to that 8hr gap of comments.
Anyway, I tries several of the bridgestone balls, e5,e6, a couple of the high priced B-series, and for me the Treosoft out did them all. Bridgestone claims that the xFIXx will out perform the Treo, but what else can they say. I'll let you know when I try it.
In regards to the slide adapter, keep me posted on your progress. If I were still working and had access to the materials and tools, I would of had one made already. Here is my latest replies from Ralph at SwingTech.

Terry
The original Pro Adjustable Attachment is no
longer available so I designed and had a machine shop make 50 attachments just to accommodate Swingtech customers.  Just parts and labor cost $35 per unit so they will sell for $50 which includes S&H.  I am working on a Home Adjustable Attachment that will sell for about half of the Pro model.  Soon I will have both models on www.swingtechgolf.com.

Let me know if you have further questions or
comments.
Ralph

Terry
The Pro Adjustable consist of a metal strut with a metal coupler and is what you need for working with beginners as they will put a lot of stress on the attachment.  I am making the Home Attachment out of a bifold door track so it will not stand much stress.
Ralph

Terry,
I will be assembling some this weekend so I can
ship the first part of the week.

Lynn: Thats interesting - I'm doing the same thing. So far I can't tell if there is any real difference between the e5 and the Noodle, but the e5 seems to work better for me around the green. I also tried the Vapor balls but I don't hit them as well as the e5 and, like you, I find they are pricey - even at WalMart. Let me know if you come across any other "tryers". Thanks for staying in touch. R2

First off I'm happy Don that you are back and I really enjoy your video's.  I was wondering if you are planning any training in the west so we can try to make it and have you teach us in person?  It always seems that teachers like yourself always go to the area's in the east, south  and midwest and they alwways seem to forget their following out here in the west.  Thanks again and I think if you could show us one of your students on the driving range while you are teaching them it would help us understand what you are trying to make them do!

Regards,
Mark-in Utah

I just think that was his personality. He seemed like a nice enough guy and not too bad a golfer. He just wouldn't shut up. When I am playing well a train could be running close by and it wouldn't distract me but when things are already not going well any little thing can throw me off.
I wanted to ask him to stay quiet while I was hitting but I didn't want to come across as mean so I just bit my tongue, as I should have.
As aggravating as he was it wasn't his fault I was playing poorly.
The two really good shots that I hit were hit when he wasn't close by. One was a 180 yard 7 iron to 3 feet. He drove up after the shot and said "Where's that been?"
I didn't have the heart to tell him that it was because he wasn't there when I hit it. LOL

Mine was the same way. I was Air Force, but our DI, Drill Instructor, thought he was training Marines. It was the only time in my life that I was able to instantly fall asleep within a few seconds. When he said fall out on a march or drill, I was almost sleeping by the time I hit the ground. After the fourth day, he allowed us to smoke when we fell out, so the cigarette became more important than the sleep. I managed to give that 4-pack a day habit up in 92, one of the hardest things I've ever done,  I probably would have been dead by now, if I had kept smoking much longer. I sort of look at life now as Dick does, every day is an extra day. For me, I would never of had these days, without the Lords help to stop killing myself.

No one can say how well you will play with the Surge swing because of your injuries and it's possible you may have to make an adjustment or two depending on the injuries. One thing is for sure though. With that much restricted movement it would be better than a rotational swing.
Have you tried playing right handed? If I could only have strength in one side I would prefer it to be my off hand side, if the arm is weak. (With the lower body I guess I would prefer the strong side in the back.)
P.S. Don't worry too much about not being able to run a 100 meters in 9 seconds. I would bet double my next pay check that there isn't a player on the PGA Tour that can do that. I would even bet the check that none of them can break 10 seconds.
Ah what the heck. After thinking about it I'll even bet the check that they can't break 11 seconds.
I think I heard someone say that Sam Snead was fast so I might not have made the bet back when he played.

Keith,

Don't worry about it. Surge loves guys like you that he doesn't have to break down and rebuild. You can ignore those points that do not apply to you (i.e. - all the anti-rotational tips). This swing is really easy. Just do what the videos and manuals tell you to do, and you will do fine. You are actually lucky. I had (have) over 40 years of bad habits to get rid of and it only took me two months to get the hang of it. I've been working for the last 8 months on developing consistency. Every so often (emphasis on often), one of those old habits slips in. Fortunately, you don't have those to worry about.

Anyway, thanks for the update and I will let you know when I come up with something that works. I've got several ideas - just need to round up the parts and see what I can put together. Should be cheaper than what is being proposed. Stand by for news. Also, my Discus is acting up - not sure what is going on. Hopefully things will get "fixed" soon. Have a great day. R2

Hey Mark, Derek Hardy does do regular schools here in the west (down in Southern California). You can always hover your mouse over the Golf Instruction tab at the top of the page and select Golf Schools from the dropdown list for dates and information.

I also hope that sometime in the not too distant future Surge is able to arrange the western Swing Surgeon tournament weekend that was canceled because of the issues that led to the breakup with his old partners in Peak Performance Golf. So it's clear, while THOSE GUYS wouldn't tell you about it, Surge was never actually gone. Just moved here to his own site where he has control of the direction and the message.

I can't believe they have internet up here. Well, I've got a meet and greet set up with St Peter, so I have to get going.  I think a lot of the deaths will be from the flooding of all our recent rain and flood waters, after the big earthquake hit's that is supposed to cause all of the graves to open. So it might still be needed by those left behind. The actual earth destruction event won't follow for another 5 months according to Harold Camping.  In any event, I have a Sunday afternoon Tee time, so I'm really torn by the early departure.

God is great.

I just got in from my all day conference.  The phone rang, and it was an Air Force veteran whose son lives out here.  She lives in some God forsaken state, I think it is Arizona.  Her son has a mold problem and they want me to get it squared away.

So, as always, I ain't done with work yet.  I have to drive up a half hour, do the job and drive back.  They have a check book, so I have to go.

I will be home in a bit and check in with you folks.  I guess I will wait until after 6 here just to make sure my truck don't get into a wreck when I get Raptured.

Welcome to the Surge Nation.  While I am not at the physical level you are at, we share a lot of the same damaged body parts.  My back and shoulders prevented me from playing for 18 years until I found the Surge.  I now play from 3 to 6 rounds a week.

I don't have the distance I had prior to my injuries.  I am getting better at this swing all the time, and my distance is increasing.  I might not ever get back to being a scratch golfer again.  Frankly, I don't care.  I found a swing that works for me.  I am out there having lots of fun.

Most importantly, I am playing pain free.  Some times I play 36 holes in the same day, still no pain.

I would suggest that you purchase the video and manual package, and get busy with them.

I wish you the happiness with your game this swing has brought me.

Keep on keeping on,
Dick, in Oklahoma, USA

The Treosofts are being phased out and replaced with the xFIXx. The last time I was in Dick's they still had plenty though at 15.00 a dozen. I already have 3 dozen so I bought a dozen xFIXx to test out with my new clubs. I might as well get used to the xFIXx, the Treosoft will be gone before too long.
