Doc Griffin: Shaft Myths (Part 5)

Fri, 07/06/2012 - 22:10 -- Don Trahan

Doc Griffin is back today with another installment on his series about Shaft Myths. This one, in particular, resonates with me since I am constantly amazed by how many people jump on the latest fad or "hot" product without any thought as to whether it makes sense for their own, very individualized swing. As Doc explains, golf swings are almost as unique as finger prints and a shaft that works for a buddy whose swing looks a lot like yours most likely won't perform for you because of differences in swing characteristics that matter: club head speed, length of swing, release point, tempo, and acceleration curve. These things aren't accurately measured by eye and subtle differences can lead to big differences in performance.

So do as Doc suggests, if you want to maximize the benefit you'll get from your equipment, make sure it has been professionally matched to your own very personalized swing.

Note: This episode got "lost" for a few weeks and Doc is already back from his mobile club fitting trip to Denver. He is going to Minneapolis/St.Paul in two weeks and Phoenix in mid-August though.

Keep it vertical!

Doc,
Glad they track down this daily and finally posted it. Hear you'll be out west soon, in Arizona. Just a tad farther than I want to drive. Don't need a fitting at the momment but just wanted to stop by and  say hi:) If you pass through Las Vegas let us know.  BTW, does it look unlikely that an LV tourny is still in the works??

Surge and DJ have been so distracted by DJ's game and Don's loss of Ken, et that perhaps they have not decided either. Time is running a little tight to announce it (if it wil happen early Sept.) so not super hopeful. Maybe we'll hear soon either way.
   Hope you still consider LV for one of your stops. May have Cindy do a fitting with you. She is hitting the new sticks I built her well and improving over all but it would be cool to get your input and recomendations.

Congrats to DJ for a pair of 69's and making the cut. He is really playing good this week. Striking the ball well and his chipping and putting is right on. Seems he made all his 3/4 footers and several in the 15-20 foot range.
Cindy and I played 18 at Los Prados today. Started out poorly but I turned it around on the back nine. Shot a 42/36 for a 78. It was the last six where I had two birdies with four pars. Fun finish. Actually made a couple putts today. My old putter may get  another chance to stay in the bag after all,

Any math whizzes out there?
This is driving me nuts!!!

.21y+y=19.36

y=____.

I got the correct answer by the hunt and peck system but have no clue how to work the problem.

  Why all the "multiplying by 100"?  You have a mental problem with decimals?    LOL

Don't know if anyone caught it yesterday on the PGA telecast. Steve Strcker layed down his club after his shot to check his alignment. One of the commentators yhen said yhat it is also perfectly fine to lay a club down before swinging as long as we pick it up before the shot. I do this frequently as Surge has suggested. It really helps assure parallel left BEFORE the mis-alignment happens. It works great. Cool to hear it re-inforced and Surge looking good as usual.

There is nobody there that I would recommend.  I probably not be back there for at least two years.

   Yes it is good to see DJ doing well --- made two consecutive cuts now -- and reday to "move up"

    On a personal note == I had my best ball stiking day in a long time today.
12 of 14 fairways (both misses just to the rith of the fiarway, but on a perfect line to the hole) -- resulted in 6 GIR and 10 pars, 5 Bogies --- marred by 2 double bogie and a triple.   7 one-putts vs 1 three-putt for 30 putts used.  2 bunkers, 1 sandy.

      10 pars and 6 GIR is my best in "many a year" !!

   Keep hittig them STRAIGHT and LONG

Thanks.
I don't know why but out of 2 semesters of math that was the one problem I had a mental block on. Got it right but it was a matter of 3 guesses and checks. (Third one was the charm, ha ha).

Now I can sleep tonight. I work it slightly different than you but without your help I would have never seen it on my own.
I do it like this:
100(.21y+y)=100X19.36
21y+100y=1936
121y=1936
121y/121=1936/121
y=16

Hey Boog, Thanks,ya Cindy's game is getting better all the time. As you may know she's only been playing for under two years and only somewhat serious (joining me a couple days a week now) for about six months. I got her a new set of clubs (her second set) about 2 months ago. We settled on the Clevland Mashies. Mistake on my part was  we got her the wrong shafts (senior). Just a tad stiff and she still had challenges getting the ball in the air. I searched the web for a good deal on L shafts with a soft enough tip - low bend point. I remeasured her for length and cut them accordingly and reshafted and gripped 'em. Got lucky I guess(on the shaft choice), they fit her real well and she's hitting all clubs much better. She putts well and is really getting some touch around the greens. She shot an 84 last time out. The Surge swing is the only one she knows. Believe me she corrects me when I'm off. Her games coming right along.

I am a senior golfer (82) handicap12. Ihave a mixed set. I live in Knoxville TN.I would
Like to go to a fitter that you could recommend. I am most interested in the proper
Shafts for me. I now have mostly senior shafts but they are not all similar. Thanks

I did it that way because Robert gave me the formula that way. He is young enough that was probably the way he was taught.
I promise you things are different than when you (and/or I) were in school.
The big thing nowadays (for some reason) is to "clear fractions and decimals". Hear it enough and you start to think that way. Another thing is dividing (or multiplying) both sides by 1 (when dividing one side by the other does the same thing). They always write 1 as any number over itself and if there is a variable with a number they use that number to "get the variable alone" on one side of the equal sign. Pretty simple once they drum all of the common sense out of you and you start to use that extra unnecessary step.
In their defense the way they do it makes it almost impossible to make a careless mistake on a simple problem.
P.S. Another thing they all do that I just don't have a knack for but wish I did is "seeing" any number they look at in prime multiples. When I look at 98 I see 98. They see 2X7X7.

Chet,

Sorry to hear you are having audio difficulties. Doc's fitting studio has high ceilings and many hard surfaces so there is a bit of an echo on all of his soundtracks. I can assure you though, that this does not impair the audio quality in any meaningful way.

I double checked the video file and I am confident that it is in good condition so the problem must be on your end. If you have a slow Internet connection, or if you have not routinely swept your computer for unwanted adware, etc. you can experience audio degradation when viewing streaming video.

Hi Doc
I live in Livonia Michigan. Would you consider coming to Michigan this summer and put on a Club Fitting Seminar so we could could talk to you on a personal basis? I would be interested in you, custom making a set of clubs and how much it would cost. I really enjoy your talks and expertise and information on club fitting.
Thanks
Peter

Thanks,
Ron
