In the blog discussion about power and distance we heard some really good ideas. Gary added another perspective that I think is an excellent observation. It has to do with your senses.
We've talked about clubhead speed, shafts being too long, the importance of hitting the ball on the sweet spot, that shafts have to have the right load and tip points for you, and your club has to have the proper loft.
Gary wrote that he knew when he hit a good drive by the sound. What he heard was the sound the club makes when you hit the ball on the sweet spot. He was hearing what a solid drive sounds like.
It drives me nuts when I see golfers on the range practicing while listening to music or whatever. When you're practicing, focus all your senses on what you're doing. You see the ball, you feel the club, and you should focus on hearing what you're doing. The more senses involved in your swing, the more powerful the feedback. And that makes for a better, faster learning experience.
So listen to your swing. You'll be glad you did.
The Surge!

Say it was Doc trying to give Janet more distance and accuracy and not me .... would Janet's new conditions on Doc prove anything one way or the other?

As to not seeing jb51s specs:
Posted by JB51 ->
"Here's my specs: I'am 5ft 11"---swingspeed--115mph---waist down--60"----long arms---head degree--7.5 degree with a 335 hozzle dia. and not 350 bore---1 wrap of double face tape so I can feel the golfshaft in my fingers and hands---if I missed anything I'am sorry
Do you have enough info now to build jb a club that is right for him? If not ask for more. If this is enough then let me know and I will send you the cash ($350?) to cover its cost. Does the $350 include the UPS or is this extra? I guess you don't have to add sales tax. If you want to tweak it after jb tries it out -- my guess is that he can follow your instructions as well. My swing speed is slower than jb's but I am going to try it out as well and compare it to what I have now.
If you want to meet my fitness buddy with 2 hip replacements I will fly you our at AA supersaver expense and pay for Delta business for your return fare. I prefer proving things rather than making assertions I can't back up. He was at Stadium last night and was carrying the ball 295+ in the air - following breeze and pretty dry warm air - 86 degrees - near sea level. I introduced my fitness buddy to some people who introduced my fitness buddy to a guy with a 170 mph clubhead speed. I told him (my fitness buddy) that my fitter could give this guy with the 170 mph clubhead speed an added 40 to 50 yards and the Jamie guy too.
After he left for a session with a student that is in the top 50 golfers in the world (according to a golfer in the top 10 who has won several majors) a guy started hitting balls right next to me who was stocky, muscular and and 6'1" tall. Had the newest equipment from Taylormade. He is maybe 26 to 30 years old.
We were both carrying the ball around 290 but I was using my driver and he was using the latest and greatest from Taylormade. So I offered my driver for him to hit. And he just looked at me and I repeated my offer. Then he said that he was German and spoke no English. So I stuck out the club to him and indicated I wanted him to swing it. So he accepted it and made one swing with it.
The ball was perfect - went further than anyone who has ever driven with my driver before. It cleared the end of the Stadium driving range about 30 yards above the fence at the end of the range. My guess is that he had hit this ball around 360 yards of carry in the air. With roll on a normal golf course over 400 yards straight down the middle , first and only swing with it. My guess is that DJ would hit over 75% of fairways if he used this club and if there was no limit on why not to hit the driver long would average over 350 yards using my club.
That is why I am pretty sure when jb51 comes down from Oakland with the driver I purchased for him from you and his own that he could use just my club to beat what he has already created for himself and your driver as well I am forwarding jb51's specs to my fitter to see if my driver is good enough or if he thinks jb needs a tad more stiffness. NO WAY do I expect to lose to either driver but I do want to try out what you built and compare it to my own.

You don't understand. It's a "MAGIC" shaft. He doesn't need fitting info. You just build the club and when the person shows up you sprinkle appropriate amounts of pixie dust on it and it automatically change length and flex to fit the individual. Quite simple really..lol.

Amos and Dick, Please forgive
Amos and Dick, Please forgive my tardiness in replying to you. I tried hours ago,but the 'system' would not even open the comments box on the reply.Perhaps as a result of the Lightning strike earlier this morning EST!
To say I was cock-a-hoop at the Martin Laird victory after a real fight back when he went from 3 up to three down in just 7holes.....etc. That was further increased learning that Paul Lawrie, had won the European Tour, Andalucia Open in Spain ; - ) The oldest player at 42years old to win the event. He last won in 2002.
Add to that Dick's 78 off the stick and my day was complete almost. My golf mate in NZ emailed that the Crusaders had won their 'home' match away from home, the NZ Rugby sevens team, won in HongKong and the cricket team are through to the final of the one day World Cup series.
As for singing "Scotland Forever", Amos, I prefer 'Flower of Scotland', which contains such words as, " [Chorus] And stood against them, proud Edward's army, and sent them homeward, tae think again" ; - ) Hahaha!
Dick, Absolutely stoked at your blog, couldn't have been happier for you, had I done it myself.
This one reminded me on a completely different topic. During the Earth lights off day, I read an article about a senior minister in Delhi, I nearly choked when I read her name. This is not a spoof or a poke at you mate, her name was "Sheila Dikshit"! I kid you not.
Now back to Golf. I heartily agree with listen for the solid shot, I always have, and no doubt at all I have heard it more of late. Laird did well and so did DJ and another golfer I follow, an American, who is improving of late, he was also tied 12 with DJ.
All the senses are important when judging a shot. My playing with my eyes closed occasionally. Even in this mode, I can sense, by feel and sound, exactly where the ball has struck the clubface and before I open my eyes I know exactly what quadrant in the sky and what trajectory I should be looking for.
Amos and Dick, Think lucky, Be lucky, Keep hitting them straight and Long and keep them vertical in Oklahoma.
Celebrating Dick? No I am saving it for a couple of months from now when I unload my duty free allowance in NZ ; - )

Thanks for your reply. I
Thanks for your reply. I have not made a video of my swing but it is on my agenda. But the suggestion about the hip orientation if great. I feel that though my feet, knees and shoulders are aligned my hips may be oriented to the right as I developed that habit to enable me to turn more comfortably when swinging rotationally. I am going to check that out tomorrow.
I am going to try your suggestions for those "tweener" wedge shots. I do have the Surge's short game videos. I didn't realize that these shots do not utilize the "bump". I will try that as well.

How about this .... I will put $500 in escrow that goes to you if you can build a driver that beats the driver my fitter created in 1 hour's work today before he has even met Janet. You have one year to collect this $500 and if you win the money covers (in part the driver you have built for Janet). (Like why would she want your driver if the one that is already built for her in an hour beats yours 30 yards?)

Janet, Welcome back, i hope
Janet, Welcome back, i hope you had a good weekend away. As to working with WK, it's entirely your show and your decision. No one on this blog will find fault, even if you decide to just forget the whole thing. If you've read all or most of the weekend post, you see that many of us have concluded to even break off communication and responses to him over the blog. So, it's entirely your decision. If i were you i would take a friend along, when and if you decide to meet him. Good luck, i think you're going to need it.
JanetM:
JanetM:
I didn't see this before. Let me talk to my fitter. So much was said about him I have to go back and see if he will be willing to allow you to hit the driver he made for you.
As to:
"Okay. I'd have to be out of my mind not to take you up on your offer." I would turn it around and tell you that if you didn't allow me to buy a driver for you that you would be out of your mind.
But what happens if I send Doc the money and you come up with a reason why you won't make the competition. Would Doc return my money? I don't think so. I could be walking into a trap and you never show up for the test.
How about this as a solution ... we find some person (like a pastor who we both trust) who will hold $325 that you place there. So if you get the driver that I paid for and don't show up or we don't have a fair competition then I get the $325 you placed into escrow. Once we can find a solution to a no show or fake performance on your part then I will send the $325 to Doc. But I would also like to have the same info you send to Doc so my fitter has it as well.
You have turned my head around like an owl watching a tennis match so often it is hard for me to trust you. All I want is a fair and open competition. And I can't guarantee what my fitter will say after all the stuff Doc said about him.
And in order to improve my odds of winning I want him to be able to change the driver he built for you. But if he says it is already ok or Doc says he wants my fitter to run with what has already been built then that would be for him to take into account as well.
It would be interesting to see if Doc will return the $325 if my fitter's driver beats his.
BTW ... you were right about Reggie Bush attending Helix, I don't mind admitting when I am wrong. Will give kudos to Doc if his driver wins. It was Ricky Williams who went to Patrick Henry. He went on to Texas where Reggie went to USC ... I stand corrected.
I don't intend to meet you .... just connect you with my driver. I am at Stadium about every afternoon if you want to spy on my swing but with so much bad blood .... why not avoid identifying yourself and don't say anything to me.
And again .... no guarantee what my fitter will do. Doc really smeared him and that really wasn't called for. I have no idea if he can create a great driver or not in just an hour but I have seen the driver head he put on your shaft (an R). I want it too but my wife would have a fit if she knew I spent that much on a driver head. And this head is not part of the deal. It is not mine to give away ... doesn't belong to me.
The best thing would you and my fitter work through few fitting sessions -- iterations (I took 2 month+ to get the right set up for my swing) but then again maybe not. Maybe what you have is perfect right now. What I do know is you have prior to this post passed on hitting an extremely valuable and useful driver. Something as good as exists on the face of the earth.
While you are checking things for Doc ... feel free to call the golf coach for Patrick Henry and ask him which three of his players were at Stadium on Monday and how they did in the long driving competition with the old tall guy. Is 285 of carry into the wind on a cool day long enough for you?
Surge, I wanted to comment on
Surge, I wanted to comment on this subject of listoning to and hearing our solid shots. My brother is one of those golfers who is extremly auditory. I mean if he hits a solid shot(particularly the driver) he hardly looks up to see where the ball goes, insteed he'll turn to me and say "I know that was a good one, right on the sweet spot, I can tell by the sound. I am more the kenistetic feel type. If it feels good I'll say so, if it feels bad, that's what I'll say, "I could tell by the way that feels." Notice how great the shots feel, especially off a well hit iron? There is almost no vibration at all. It feels like nothing and yet the ball flys high and far and on line. There is nothing better than the feeling of a solid on the spot iron. Love it.
That's a pretty good check
That's a pretty good check point for the top for most people. Different body types might make it necessary to adjust that a little. DJ's shoulder is kind of under his chin whereas Don's shoulder and upper arm are covering his chin, but DJ has a longer neck and different build. Also more flexibility to raise the arms.

Be careful what you ask for. It is just about that time of day for Dragonhead to make an appearance. Let's hope he has been out celebrating and partying it up. Here's hoping that we don't have to wait too long to find out!

Janet, Do the smart thing and just walk away. There is nothing in it for you. You don't even get to keep the club, he's simply using you as a pawn to try and entice Doc back into the fray. I apoligize for ever getting you involved with someone like him. My best advice to you, is to walk away from the whole thing. Just ignore him from here on in, like many of us have chosen to do. He's not worth the effort. You are just being used by him.

This is proof of what happens to our brains when we stay up this late. That right there is some funny stuff. I have two thoughts right off the bat with that thing.
I wonder if I can get that thing mounted onto a lift at the back of a golf cart. I could just back the cart up to my ball and swing away.
I am sorry, but this is just the way my brain works. I am thinking we could take that and hook all the guides up to a motor to make it powered. The down side would be if you got a control system glitch, it might just go nuts while you are in there and turn into a crazy gyro thing and start spinning you around. If that happens please make sure you have a video camera going. I don't want that to happen to anyone, but if it happens, I don't to miss seeing it.
I think Jeff Foxworthy invented that thing
Dick
Jim, when you take your back
Jim, when you take your back swing and cover the stick behind you with your left arm, where is the shaft of the club? Is that down the line of the stick as well? When I do it I find the club shaft is in front of the stick.
Thanks Andy

I don't mind if JB51 kicks "the crap out of WK in the driving completion." This may be hard for you to understand but all I want is to find out what driver is best and who knows how to translate their knowledge into a product that delivers the highest results.

I am not going to go see your fitness buddy. My son has a close friend who is a personal trainer, so if I was going to see anyone, I would see him.
Sorry about your skin cancer. Really I am. So does this mean that you are currently NOT hitting the ball 300 yards? So if I want to see someone hit it 300 yards I have to go see your fitness guy, who has already achieved 300 yards and will tell me that this new material has given him extra yards?
Why don't you call my # and leave the number of the fitter so I can go pick up the club?

JB51, Since your apology to
JB51, Since your apology to Doc, the blog, and me, I do not believe that I have said anything spiteful to you. The only thing I can think of that even is negative in any way, is wondering how you obtained your wrist to floor measurement. That is why I posted an FYI comment with a link to the correct method, hoping you would see it and appreciate the info. You have claimed to be a qualified fitter, but, by your own admission you said you had never heard of the wrist to floor measurement. You seemed to scoff at Docs need for modern launch monitors and other such equipment. Excuse me, but that seems to be inconsistent with knowledge a qualified fitters would have and use. Other than any comments in regards to those areas, I can think of nothing, and this is my last reference to you that i could find, posted yesterday.
Swing Surgeon Golf School: Day 3 - The Surge's Daily Blog yesterday
Robert, youâÂÂre welcome. I've been trying to stay away too, but you know who, kept making comments about what I said being lies, and I just had to correct HIS errors. As for JB, I think he has a better understanding and has tried to make amends, so IâÂÂm willing to forgive and forget in reference to him. As to the rest, I couldn't care less. I awoke this morning to a fresh white blanket outside again and a temp of 24*
If, after that comment, you have found offense at any thing I said in regards to you personally, then I sincerely apologize and ask that you inform me of what exactly I said that was personally offensive. I understand that you are an innocent bystander and to some measure have been blind sided. I have no ill will for you. I wish you the best in life and will honestly try to refrain from being offensive to you. However, do not take a question or difference of opinion as being offensive. Personally, I hope you kick the crap out of WK in the driving completion. Good luck !!!!!!!!

Also ... Janet ... I just saw from Doc where he has asked you to fill out a questionnaire ... do you have any objection to posting that info here ... so long as Doc doesn't feel questionnaire is his proprietary property. I understand IP issues very well ... thus the secrecy surrounding what you will get.
Your swing data would be interesting to those still following this idea and your results of the test would be guidance to them ... regardless of which driver sends balls longer.
amusing:
amusing:
Janet likes the option of testing her new driver. If she wants to see me hit the ball of course I will do that for her too. I have asked her to have Doc make his absolute best club for her, fedex it to her and have her use it in a head to head competition against what my fitter creates for her. And of course we should also ask her to create numbers on how far she hits it with her present driver. So we have numbers on 2 and possibly 3 combos (3 if Doc chooses to compete head to head against this new material fitted by my fitter - my fitter says that he is 50% of the equation).
If Doc wants to personally fly out to San Diego for the competition so he can optimize his efforts on Janet's behalf I will personally pop for his AA supersaver airfare and his rental car and his motel. If we stage a series of competitions then Doc can get the launch monitor results from all three drivers and keep trying to beat my fitter - as many times as he wishes ... but of course with this new Rambax material Doc might beat my fitter in which case I will be asking Doc to make me driver that is 43 inches long (shorter being better).
Thanks Steve.

Yep, the fact that he said the driver was ready in less than an hour was the final nail in the coffin. I may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but even I know that a club fitting involves more than a couple of emails. There were other little discrepancies, but when we went from me having to get together with his fitter on Saturday to the club being ready today pretty much said it all. I agree -- it's time to just ignore him.
