In the blog discussion about power and distance we heard some really good ideas. Gary added another perspective that I think is an excellent observation. It has to do with your senses.
We've talked about clubhead speed, shafts being too long, the importance of hitting the ball on the sweet spot, that shafts have to have the right load and tip points for you, and your club has to have the proper loft.
Gary wrote that he knew when he hit a good drive by the sound. What he heard was the sound the club makes when you hit the ball on the sweet spot. He was hearing what a solid drive sounds like.
It drives me nuts when I see golfers on the range practicing while listening to music or whatever. When you're practicing, focus all your senses on what you're doing. You see the ball, you feel the club, and you should focus on hearing what you're doing. The more senses involved in your swing, the more powerful the feedback. And that makes for a better, faster learning experience.
So listen to your swing. You'll be glad you did.
The Surge!

Dick, My evening dinner
Dick, My evening dinner substitute is a couple of slices of Mantou [Steamed Bread freshly made by my wife every 4/5days], overlaid with a slice of genuine, New Zealand Anchor, Cheddar Cheese. This I grill most evenings, rather than have a large meal. Hahahah glad to see that you grilled cheese. Ice cream has been off the menu for a while for us, though why I have not quite worked out. I have always eaten ice cream year round, even at umpteen degrees below in Germany. Still can't complain at my gourmet Chef's menu, hahaha, she loves cooking and we both like eating.
Was that a chocolate brownie with the ice cream?
Sleep well, your day has been a beaut! Chuffed, stoked, over the moon for you and join the others with a big smile. Now a straight face and wish your 'dad' luck in the next match. He will darned well need it.

See your "would u care to double down on gas/ food + hotel " and double that when you LOSE! BTW ... I never said I would cover your hotel bill, that offer is only for Doc if he ever summons the desire to come to San Diego and learn how to build golf clubs.
What I would like to see is DJ use my driver (after refinishing the head) and have his caddy take the Aimpoint lessons (1&2). We see the ball going in the hole when hit on the line drawn on the screen when hit at the right speed (speed and direction - in math we call that a vector). Aimpoint shows you how to KNOW AHEAD OF TIME how to pick speed and direction.
So his caddy figures all this out ahead of time before DJ plays the course and then tells DJ how hard to hit the ball and how much break to allow. (speed and direction).
Using my driver instead of the one Doc created for him DJ will gain and extra 40 yards and be in the fairway 80% of the time (instead of 43% like he was one day at the Shell). This EXTRA distance and accuracy would translate to shorter putts and with Aimpoint the putts drop like Scotty mcCarron's do.
DJ becomes #1 in golf. Bigger than Tiger ever was..
Doc will do, I am not a club
Doc will do, I am not a club surgeon. (let's not cloud the waters with nicknames)
The shaft is ok. I will work well for those that it fits. That is a small list, but it will work.

Yea, that's exactly how it was working for me earlier, but not now. I just closed everything out, deleted all my cookies and temps, and linked back on. Still the same, the actual comment area flashes into view for just a split second, and then goes to the heading at the top of the video. It works the same from all locations, Rss Feed, Dashboard, and left column, even if it's the most recent comment. Strange, i hope it returns, i really, really, like that function.

I want to run this idea past both of you -
I want to measure Doc's ability to create a golf club for the public against what my fitter can do with this new material that I am using.
So how about these steps (I am not sure my fitter will agree to fit either one of you so this is just a trial balloon for you two and Doc to consider:
Since jb already has a club je fit for himself how about we fit him first with a Doc built club. And we get a three way comparison between the results of my fitter, jb and Doc's club. My fitter has a son so the son can stand out along side where the balls are landing and he reports back the length of each shot. There will be no way he knows which club that jb is using but I also want to figure out a way to test to see if jb is trying hard with his own club vs my fitter's and Doc's -- like wouldn't he just love to be the best of all three efforts hahaha.
If all three of these clubs are something that I can hit then I will also be a club tester and maybe others I know might want to be in the test as well. I pay for a Doc built club for JB and also for his gas and meals. He can stay at his friend's house. So jb publish right here on this forum all that Doc needs to know about fitting you with a golf club and Doc will say if that is adequate.
You can go through trial and error up in Oakland until you both feel that you got the right club from Doc. And you report the distance of his and your clubs right there. If your club beats Doc's we are all entitled to see if you were giving us the straight story so you bring both clubs down here to San Diego and we have a 3 way competition down here. You already have told us all what the shaft you are using (forget the name) but will tell us the rest of the story on your club and Doc can choose to tell what he built and what he was thinking or not.
So even if your own club beats Doc's we will have others to try it as well. Maybe others will beat your shaft with Doc's ... or maybe not.
After this step then you come to San Diego for the 3 way playoff.
Let's say my fitter wins (most likely outcome) ... then we want to test Doc's ability to design clubs for Janet's swing speed. Maybe he creates the best for her and my new shaft at R isn't right for her. And feel free to create a club for her as well but I won't pay for that one.
No doubt you have to get back to Oakland at some point - but it would be nice for you to meet Janet if you want to but I have no idea of her schedule. Twice I thought I gave her a chance to meet me (she has a different version of the facts) so it is best that I never meet her. Wife wondered who that woman (Janet) was who left a message on my machine aieeee!!! (I had even explained to my wife ahead of time the meeting in a public place and all the conditions from this forum etc.)
If you win the competition three way competition down here there is no reason for me to buy a driver from Doc since my fitter is in disgrace and a proven big time loser in public. But given the likelihood my fitter prevails then I buy a driver for Janet from Doc to her swing specification (we would all like to see them published right here) and then we conduct a three way trial. Janet's current driver to be tested as well.
Like what if Janet was trying to get more accuracy and distance via what she has purchased thus far and either my fitter or Doc gives her 30 or 40 more yards straight down the middle. I figure that would cause a land rush of guys to chuck their old drivers and go out and buy more distance and accuracy without doing a thing to their swing (just like I already did).
Surge gave me more accuracy but with some loss of distance following his recommendations. See DJ in the video turn nearly 90 degrees I see he is turning a lot more than I am ... I am only almost up to him because of my new shaft ... so I am haunted by the tip I got from Derek Hardy. Like what if you turn to the mitt ut instead of going straight up go back at a 10 degree from vertical upswing towards the SBG. I have tried to incorporate that idea and it gives me a ton more turn and still no BACK PAIN!!! Flaring out the right foot helps too and I am also just starting balance and agility drills - Eric Jones 5 Keys to distance ... nothing in it conflicts with Surge or Derek as far as I have read.
Got this book via CJ and I never follow any of his tips ... but this Eric guy teaches the way I like to be taught .... much like John Wooden. Like Wooden use to even teach his players how to put on their socks and tie their shoes to prevent blisters. Eric even gets into how the brain creates pathways enhanced by the build up of myelin and how to build habits.
So anyway ... if Doc wants to go ahead and build a driver for Janet that is fine with me but if jb51 beats my fitter then that is the end of the need for competition as far as I can see.

Howdy Gang,
I got tied up with work and have really missed the blogs the last couple of weeks. I'm posting here on the latest before going back for a recap of what I've missed. One quick question, I'm aware of the lightning strike this morning ( I tried getting on this morning when I got home), so would that be the reason I have none of my videos, etc.? I know it mentions a 24 hour period on the homepage but wanted to know if anyone else was in the same boat before I contacted Support.Okay, I'm off to catch up, I'll check back to see if anyone is in the same boat. Congrats, DJ nice run at Bay Hill.

In personal training ... what
In personal training ... what you want is someone who specializes in optimizing your body to play golf. My guy is free for the first session (I will pay for it) so you can take his suggestions and compare that to the one your son recommends. This is what I do. I have my own personal trainer come out to my house twice a week and we work solely at helping me alter my body so it can use Surge's ideas on how to hit the golf ball with a vertical swing.
A huge issue at my age (I was tested at Body Balance and they have a free testing offer now at Stadium that you should try - say hello to Jeremy) is that my hip joint had stiffened and this caused me to stand up and not hold my backswing or stay in posture to impact.
My son does MMA (a couple months ago he held Royce Gracie for over 2 minutes until Royce busted him in the moth to get out) and fitness and he had me work out with his fitness guy. My legs had become as flexible as my sons. The balance of my fitness was pretty much to pot except for anything that was needed in the golf swing.
So it is your call on one free session with my fitness buddy. The fitness guy (I think his name is greg Rose) at Titleist Performance Institute(as seen on the golf channel) is really good at general fitness but he really doesn't know the golf swing. And my fitness buddy doesn't agree with the vertical swing and the prior fitness deal I purchased through Surge was pretty lame. So there is a huge opportunity here -- my fitter hits the ball maybe 360+ at age 57 (if memory serves) and he has a guy who stretches him as well.
I asked my fitter if I could give you his number or vice versa and he says that is ok but he doesn't want you to repeat anything you learn from him (no names or any ino at all -- total blackout) ... all you can report is the numbers you get from swinging his club ... and of course the numbers from your old club and the numbers from the club Doc sends you if he wants to prove his capability vs my fitter and his new material.

Dick,
Congrats on the 78 today! I'm about halfway caught up but wanted to catch you before you retired for the evening. Sure have missed the entire gang, We have demo'd out 3 headers and associated boiler panels and rehung the replacements, now all that remains is to weld everything back.I'm not sure of the weld count maybe somewhere in the 800-1000 range. We hydro the boiler around the 20th of next month so I can soon start my serious golf work. I've carried my wedge down and try to pitch around the yard and pasture where I'm staying but a lot of days it's simply work all night, sleep all day with eating dinner in between, lol.
One benefit is that my youngest son, 23 yr old Matt, is the lead Operating Engineer on nights and I got to flag (signal) him as we were loading those 6.5 ton panels on trailers with his 50T crane. We're also sharing a room at the hunting camp so it's a couple of moments of his hunting tv in the morning followed by my 30 minutes of the Golf channel before we fall off to sleep.
I'm really looking forward to the conclusion of this job so I can get home for my summer job at the hall which will allow me ample time for my golf game.
Have a good week my friend and talk to you next weekend.

I remember when you first started posting here and got into Doc/WK scenario. Some suggested to you at that time that maybe it was a good idea to step back since there were months of history involved that possibly you were not aware of. I've tried to stay out of it as much as possible..not always successfully, I admit.
I have no idea what your credentials are as a fitter, but we all know what Doc's are. I'm the first to tell you I know squat about fitting, but my mother did teach me a few things about manners. When you reply to Doc...I'll read your "crap" later,,, that struck me as being totally out of line. If you want to be taken seriously on this blog that might not be the way you want to go. I'm not telling you what to do one way or the other, it's just my opinion. We all have differing opinions on various subjects here, but civility is something that we need to get back to.

Funny that you use the term "thwack." A very dear friend of mine, a tiny little woman, always envied the sound the guys got when they hit a drive. She would always say, "I just want to get that thwack!" Now her driver is metal, so it's not an issue.

Reply to WK - You previously wrote: "If you will let me buy a driver from Doc for you and agree to the secrecy proviso then I will have you meet him with the driver he already created for you. " I agreed to keep everything secret, and now you're adding a bunch of conditions. You said it yourself -- I'd be crazy not to accept your offer of a driver from Doc, so I am. Now you want to involve another person in this situation by having someone act as an escrow agent. No. You previously were willing to pay for Doc's airfare and everything else to come to San Diego. This is much cheaper. Send him $325, he'll build a driver, and then I'll get together with your fitter to test both drivers at the same time. Here's my offer -- if the driver your fitter has built doesn't get me at least 25 additional yards, I'll pay you $150 and you'll be able to brag to everyone here that your miracle shaft beat Doc's and I'll have a new driver from Doc for $150. Your fitter will be there watching me swing, so he'll know if I'm "cheating," but frankly, I don't know how I can cheat. And I won't divulge his name or anything about the driver he made.
As for Doc's questionnaire, I'm not posting everything here for the world to see. You can email Doc directly through his website and I'll authorize him to give you the info (but what does it matter since your fitter has already built my driver, right?).
That's my offer. It's very simple. No more negotiating, no more new conditions. Take it or leave it.

Did you ever give the little troll your wrist to floor (wtf) measurement, your club head speed, a video of your swing, or anything else a real fitter would need? When Doc does his long distance fittings for our folks he has a whole list of such questions they have to complete. If the troll's fitter can just build you a club by thinking about you for an hour and it all comes to him in a trance, that is pretty cool.
Glad you are done with it,

I agree, so back to my hockey game today. I could not put the puck in the net. I was 1 over after the first 5 holes and really didn't hit the ball solid. Next 4 holes on the front went bogey, par, double and double. Par on the first 3 holes on the back and the wheels came off. Wound up 7 over on the back and 13 over for the round. It was mostly timing and tempo. Just one of those days we all have. It was a 2-3 club wind all day and when you line up a putt and the wind won't leave it alone long enough to putt it you just sorta laugh and think...I don't remember having a tee time at St Andrews..lol. The air was crisp and it was a nice walk, so it's all good.

My fitter is going to have to decide who goes first but I think you have a point that since you accepted first you are first in line .. like I only offered the deal for the new driver shaft to all comers for months here. You have nerve to challenge my fitter since he is the creme del a creme - top of the heep fitters in the world. Why he just told me that Jim Flood sought him out to test drive shafts way way back when Jim headed Aldila.
And to Doc - there are no new material on earth except those that result from nuclear reactions. The carbon in graphite shafts dates back to the start of the universe when all known elements were created around the time of the Big Bang.
jb51 - go ahead and post your swing info here for all to see - the same thing that you will give my fitter.

No Doc,

Hey, JS, As some of the recent videos have talked about, I'd bet that those 3 or 4 pulls are times when your feet are lined up 20 yards right of your target, and in trying to compensate (since your brain knows where it really wants to go), your body ends up going around more and yanking the ball left. When you hit the next one of those shots, before you step out of your finish, roll back to your setup position and put the club down along your toe line. Look where it's aimed and 5'll get you 10 it's right of your target.
Janet:
Janet:
As I moved down the list it turns out that jb51 also decided to accept the challenge as well. What I want to do is buy both of you a driver so we cover more territory for different swings but it would be nice if Doc would agree to return my money on at least one driver if both of my fitter's drivers beat both of his. I want you to wind up with a Doc driver ... am also considering how to tell if you don't try as hard with the driver my fitter has already built for you.
Like I have been offering free air fare for people to come out here for the competition .. and that is still a good idea for anyone who already has a Doc built driver ... and now I get two acceptances in one night .... not even sure which was first ... yours or jb51s.
My fitter is going to make the call as to who goes first. Ladies first or the guy who has never questioned his reality.
Forgot to answer your
Forgot to answer your distance question - with carry I was over 300 yards the last 4 days of last week. Not being a pro a new person shows up at the range every day and I have to run through a list of tip stored in my noggin to get to hitting that far. I have been longer but I am not trying to make excuses for losing that distance ... lots of variables in play. But I should be able to show you a whole bunch of 300 yards drives (total) that are pretty close to the target out of a full bucket of balls after I am warmed up.
The fun thing for me now would be to have Doc send you the very best driver he can make and then have a head to head competition with his best effort vs what my fitter can create for you. Since you and my fitter can get together face to face we should share launch monitor results with Doc so he can do trial and error for you. I want his very very best effort on the table for you to use and then I want to take the very best he can create and put that up against what my fitter will create for you..
I am even offering Doc to have him fly out at my expense (AA supersaver) and pay to put him up at the Holiday Inn so he can spend as much time with you as he can to create his very best driver for you.

I don't know if you saw his post to Phil a few hours ago. I am pasting it here for you guys to read if you missed it the first time.
Phil NZ, your spot on--everything that's been going on is between this WK guy and the Doc. Everything you said has nothing to do with his fitter. If u try and block IP address then you just as BAD as the CANCER between WK and the DOC. It seems like u can have your opinions but know else can have theirs and on top of this doesn't concern you and it's none of your business. JB51
I am not sure why the whole matter is his business and not Phil's business, unless he is connected to WK or is WK. Between his initial rants, his last couple of comments to and about Doc, and this post to Phil, I have had enough of reading his posts. I tried making peace with him, and as you can all see, it made no difference.
I am adding him to my "No fly zone" along with the other people I won't waste my time and energy on. His posts or any mention of him in other's posts will not draw any comment from me. I hope that some of the other regulars will do the same, if any of you have had enough of his stuff.

You came on here immediately after our conversation and said I said I could hit 200. I figure that's so when you would finally see me hit, you could say I'm a liar.
You're right. I would need a driver fit just for me. And there's nothing to say that I wouldn't hit just as far with a driver with a regular shaft that was fit just for me as with one made out of your magic mystery material that was fit just for me.
How about this. Call my # and leave the name and number of your fitter. I'd like to talk to him before I go anywhere with this. I also wouldn't mind having the name of your fitness buddy and the 5'2" LPGA player he worked with.

As to
" I have one Question for u---how is the Doc going to build these drivers for Janet and I if he can't use his launch monitor like he told me when I defended your fitter ?"
One more time ... I have no clue how anyone creates a shaft, club head or puts the info all together -- no clue. I have no clue how to regrip a club. I also have no clue how to build a Jaguar out of raw material. But I do now how to drive one.
I agree on the double standard and if Doc wants to fly to San Diego to personally fit Janet then he has my standing offer of my payment of he American Airlines supersaver round trip.
But the way I see it ... if you best my fitter's best effort then there is no reason for my fitter to compete for best fitter/using best materials prize -- you would have put him in palookaville forever. The Janet competition should only take place if you lose to my fitter. And then only after we have a 3 ways competition between your club (feel free to create a new one when my fitter destroys your best effort) and what Doc will create for you. The first Doc driver I want built is the one for you so place info here so he canbuild you a driver. Then I will send him the $325 for your club from him if my fitter is still #1 champion fitter.
And I think it is not a good idea for you to ever meet him face to face for very obvious reasons. Same with my fitter after what Doc said about him.
But Janet should meet him and they can even take extended time for the right combo if that is what they want to do. At that point I am out of the loop. I supply her the driver shaft from my fitter and I buy her a Doc driver (if we get that far) and then my fitter tells me what happened and Janet can report back too. And before that I want a report from you on the results of the competition between you and my fitter and then the 3 way play off where other people get to try these clubs too. My swing speed and mechanics are under constant improvement and I think I want to try all three clubs as well ... super curious to try out Doc's club and compare it to what I am using. (of course mine is 47" and he won't make one that long for you.)
Hello all
Hello all
Great posts today guys. A great weekend overall.
Yesterday I went to hit some balls and putt at the course I am working at as a marshal. I got to meet a bunch of the other guys who vol there. One of them had the driver I was asking about last night. He had bought it about a year or so ago. It looked brand new. His wife just had him fitted and bought him a whole new bag. (I hope my wife reads that part) I loved the feel of it when I swung it. He let me hit a couple dozen balls with it. I was really hitting it well. I asked him what he wanted for it. He said he would not give me a price for it until I was able to play a round with it. He told me to keep it till I played a round and then call him. I did not try to talk him out of it, I just put it in my truck. Then I had to leave for our grandson's baseball game. As it turned out, he was in a tourney. They won the 2:15 game and had to play again at 7:30. I got home late and still had a mold inspection report to write. I was up too late. I got up and went to church. One of our other grandsons got baptized this morning. After church I went to work at the course. It was cold, windy, with an occasional light rain. Not too many people came out to play. The wind died about 2:30 and it actually got pretty nice. Around 4:00 they told me they were sending me home early. I said "Oh no you don't." I could not go home 4 hours early. You never know what you might walk in on if you show up 4 hours before the wife is expecting you. Besides as it worked out, I could play a FREE round with the new driver. I just took the Marshal flag off my cart, loaded my bag and hit the course, after I hit a bucket of balls to loosen up. I learned a valuable lesson today. I should always play when I am tired and going on 5 hours of sleep. I was killing it today. I will go into the game in a minute. When I got back to the clubhouse, the guy who owned ( that's right, he don't own it no more) the club was there. I told him I wanted to buy that stick. He wanted to make sure it worked for me. Boy did it work. He said since I was new with the program he would give me a good deal. He said if you want it I will let you have it for $75. I did not even try to talk him down. I paid him for it right there. ( I hope my wife does not read that part)
Now to the best news. I played today like I used to play prior to my injuries. I hit all but 2 fairways. One of the misses was with one of my pizza slices. The other landed in the fairway, rolled across the dog leg right and went about 10' onto the first cut. For so long now, I couldn't hit 12 fairways in the same game with my cart, let alone my driver. My longest drive for the day rolled out at about 280 yards. Most were in the 240-260 range. I was even smacking my 3w. I only missed the green on 1 par 3. I ended up with 3 birdies, 6 pars, and 9 boogies. I SHOT A 6 OVER PAR 78. Yes, you read that right, I shot a 78. Oh my God, I was excited when I broke 100, then 90 when I started playing again. Just skipped right to the good stuff. I don't know if I can ever break 80 again. I don't even care. I just wish dad had been there to share this with me. It is kind of like making a hole in one when no one is there to share it with you. Don't tell him about this. I want to see the look on his face if I can shoot anywhere near this again when we play latter this week. I was tired when I finished the round and it was just getting dark. I kept seeing sparks fly off the face of my new driver when I hit the ball. I was scared that I had cracked the face and the parts where sparking when I hit it. But, this old cowboy figured it out after the 3rd time. They have just done the spring surfacing of all the greens. I was getting sand on the ball from the green. When I hit it with the driver, I was crushing the grains of sand and that was throwing the spark. Mystery solved.
I would have run home, if my country butt had not been so tired. When I got home, my loving wife had one final surprise for me. Knowing that I had been working out in the cold all day, that woman of mine had a big pot of homemade soup waiting for me. Warmed me up to the bone.
Am I leading a blessed life, or what?

It works pal. IT WORKS. Don't listen for one minute to the nay sayers, or the whiners who can't watch an 8 minute video without falling asleep. You just keep right on talking and teaching, and I will keep right on listening.
To my brothers on this blog.
I have said it before and I am going to say it again. Thanks for your friendship, your counsel, and your encouragement as I have struggled to learn this swing and get back my game. Today it all came together. I want to do this again. So, don't let up on me. Help me keep my nose to the grindstone. Now I have to figure out how to get to the course for at least 9 holes 3 or 4 days a week.

how much are you willing to give to my charity if my fitter's driver wins? I will pay your charity the same amount if we lose and agree onthe terms.
