Make the Swing Your Own

Sat, 03/19/2011 - 16:03 -- Don Trahan

I was watching the blog the other day and noticed a conversation going on between Lynn Griffin, our Director of Club Fitting, and Robert F. about ball position. Lynn said he played his ball a little further ahead than I taught because his clubhead speed wasn'€™t as fast as mine. Robert wondered if he should move the ball around. My answer: yes.

Let'€™s review ball position. We play wedges through 7 irons in the middle. Then the ball gradually moves forward until we get to the left heel with the driver. I want everybody to understand that what I am teaching are standards. But I want each and every one of you to experiment a little, find out what is best for you.

The key here is that we'€™re all different. I want you to use both your strengths and weaknesses to find out what is right for you. My job is to help you maximize your body to fit the laws of physics. Some of us have issues with bad ankles, bad knees, and bad backs. The Surge Swing has helped you minimize those issues, but we'€™re still all different.

Even though I give you tight parameters, it'€™s up to you to if you want to bend them a little, one way or the other. Experiment a little. You'€™ll always play better when you make the swing your own.

The Surge!

Sorry to hear about your challenges Ronnie. Seems you have a way to keep a measure of your sense of humor. I always wondered, is that rotwhiler or a bear in the picture?
Hang in there buddy. It is good to see you back with us today.

One o'clock from what view? Do a search for "Swing Clock Defined" and you'll see the correct range for where the club shaft should be at the transition from back swing to forward swing. It's between 11 o'clock and 12:30 if you're looking down the line, but should be going to somewhere between 1 and 2 o'clock if your son is looking at you from behind or head-on (if he's standing at the side of the tee box as he should be rather than the back of the tee box).

Steve and Lynn

I never did get to catch up on how both of your last rounds ended up. Hope you both had great games.

I have seen several posts in the past about a swing training aid Surge and Doc recommend. Can anyone give me the name of that thing again, and about what I should expect to spend on one?

Possibly more important than Vit C for increasing immunity and decreasing illness/disease is Vit D3. I've been reading about this a lot, and have stepped up my daily dose. Now that it's warming up outside, I need to get outdoors and get my D3 the old fashioned (and free!) way! This article on Dr. Mercola's website explains how critical Vit D3 is for overall health and wellness: http://articles.mercola.com/si....

Robert I truly wish you the very best in your recovery. After all we are here because of our passion for the game except for maybe WK, but then he also seems to have a lot of knowledge and passion mingled with a strong dose of BS. In my neck of the woods that could be knocked out of him. That is my great dog Moses and the love of my life for the past 9 years. He keeps me going. I kept stealing him from my neighbors when he was about 6mos. when it was 90+ and he had no food or water. When the kids came home from school he was back on the short rope. Finally the lady over there asked me if I would like to have him because they were thinking of buying the kids rabbits. Neither of us looked back and to this day he won't even look that way when we walk. He is special indeed. In my case with my hands I did not stress rehab and wearing a splint at night enough. My crap usually comes back anyway. It is time for you to get your sorry butt up and go to the range.

Simply Golf, Thanks for the kind words, but my problems are minor compared to what a lot of folks have to endure each day in this world. Too many blessing for me to bother whining about the discouragements. Yes, i am aware of the cortesones diminishing effects. There was a time when i was getting regular injections into my feet for Plantar fasciitis. Luckily i havent had a flare up of that in a couple years or so either. I now wear shoe inserts, even in my house slippers. I also take the supplements you have mentioned, along with a handful of other supplements and vitamins for many years now. Two years ago it was my left knee and ortho-scopic surgery to clean out all of the broken and deterriorating cartilage. I have also had to have three seperate surgeries on finger knuckles in the past 2 years to remove rheumatoid enduced synovial cysts, which tend to form at the nail beds and last knuckles for some reason. Well, that's enough whining, braging or complaining for one day, trivial stuff in the realms of life.I would only add that the vitamin D suppliment should be the D-3, or so i've been told, and also, that Omega 3 Fish oil is good for the joints, i take 1200mg a day. Cheers

Does anyone remember the name of the vitamin supplement company that Don recommended to us quite awhile ago?
