Swing Update From The Surge

Fri, 04/13/2012 - 19:31 -- Don Trahan

Today I'd like to give you all an update on what I've been working on with my swing. Because I conduct golf schools and private lessons on a regular basis, it's important for me to always be on top of my game. If I can't perform the swing that I am teaching, it's likely that the student won't buy into what he or she is being taught.

I consider myself to be the best Surge Swinger out there because I've been doing this for so long. Yet, I rarely practice on the driving range. Most of my practice comes from these backyard daily lessons and any demonstrations I give on a lesson tee. That means sometimes I've got to put in some self analysis on my own game in order to keep it sharp. Recently, I wrote down some notes that remind me that I've got to load my right leg in order to swing up to the finish better. Posture also plays a big role in the loading of my right leg. It all comes back to what I like to call technical excellence. If we don't practice with a purpose and work on the right things, our game can suffer as a result.

As you'll see in the video, I explain how other sports utilize the same loading motion that I'm referring to in the Peak Performance Golf Swing.

Keep it vertical,

The Surge!

Ha Ha, It is almost like all those over weight folks who believe it is their clothes that make them look fat. I can always honestly say it is not the jeans which make their butt look fat. Wonder what else it could be though?

Dick

With appologies to blonds everywhere, especially my loving wife:

A man got on the bus with both of his front trouser pockets full of
golf balls and sat down next to a beautiful (you guessed it)
blond.

The puzzled blond kept looking at him and his bulging
pockets.Finally, after many glances from
her, he said, "It's golf balls."

The blond continued to look at him for a very long time, thinking
deeply about what he had said.

After several minutes, not being able to contain her curiosity any
longer, she asked . . .

"Does it hurt as much as tennis
elbow?"

This week, DJ has some "pretty good" company -- like Ernie Els and Padraig Harrington also missed the cut.
I think the guys that played early Thursday, late Friday got the worst of the weather.  True it is a "rub of the green" thing - but it would explain a few things - probably to the tune of 4 or 5 strokes over the two days.

Goodnight Dick,

I hope you are safe and well. Rained off and on all day and evening here,  but no high winds.

EDIT; You must have been typing at the same time as I. Just saw your post and am glad to hear you are safe and doing ok. Once more though, I will say goodnight Dick and hit the hay. Just looked out and it is still raining here. I will start on the Ark tomorrow!

I would like to know how many customers that you took advantage of. I bought all of your products on Peak Performance Golf a few years ago. All of my videos, that I bought, disapeared along with you. I really thought that you were one of the good guys. How could I have been so naive? My game was improving until revolution took over and screwed up my whole swing. I thought that i was still following your teaching until my just fell apart. You have taken the fun out of golf for me and I doubt that I am the only one that you treated this was. What a great honost man you are. I am poor but I guess that you needed my money more. So that you could continue living in your upscale lifestyle. sincerely, John P. Weekend Tournament report.

Saturday got 4-5 holes in and the monsoons hit and got canceled. Sunday played up in Beavercreek, Ohio Beavercreek golf club. 22 mph wind not stop. The greens are normally fast on this course and were today only  worse with the wind drying them out. Shot 88 today with 3 trips and 1 quad which came from chipping, pitching and putting hard to believe how much the winds effect chips, pitches and putts.

All and all happy with the round under the conditions. I hit really good full iron shots all day and spanked the driver all day only had 1 bad driver all day which I had hit down the right side of the fairway with a cross wind from left to right the wind pushed it right 30 yards off the fairway under and behind some pine trees. Took a 4 iron and chipped back into the fairway and had 90 yards dead into the wind hit pw and landed it 110 feet right of the pin and it ran of the back right of the green chipped it back on rolled it past the pin and off the front for 4    putted back on left it short and the 2 putted for a 7. This is basically how my 4 bad holes happened. Practice  sessions from here on out are going to be maybe a large bucket of balls at tops for full shots and a couple hours of pitching, chipping and putting.

I'm sure nobody is more upset about it than DJ. He's been within one stroke of the cut line, one side or the other, in pretty much every tournament this year. Unfortunately, too many days on the wrong side. He's just a couple putts falling away from great rounds all the time.

The only real noticeable thing I've seen is that he seems to come up short with his 195 yard club more often than not (6 iron I'm guessing). Maybe Doc wants to check it and see if something bent there and the loft is off. Or maybe I'm just full of it. :)

One thing, Terry: It was the end of 2010, not 2011. Surge et al have been at this new site since January 2011. More than a year now. Sadly, there are plenty of old PPGS subscribers who have never been told why the instruction they signed up for suddenly changed to the same old stuff that gave them bad backs and bad golf games.

True story that people unfamiliar with dog terminology may not "get":

In Missouri I had two labs, one black and one light yellow. My wife and I took them over to the lake one day to swim and a friend of ours was coming by in his boat as they were swimming out to retrieve a tennis ball. He yelled in to me "Hey...Is that blond a bitch?" (Of course talking about the yellow lab).

I thought nothing of it and yelled back "yes".

When I looked over at my wife she had her mouth open and said "I can't believe he said that...And can't believe you agreed with him".

P.S. I like what Dolly Parton said when she was asked if the "dumb blond" jokes bothered her.
She said "They don't bother me at all because I'm not dumb and I'm not blond". ;-)

Missing a cut by one stroke has to be aggravating.
Sort of like losing our little games by one stroke only with the importance and pressure of job security and public scrutiny piled on top of it.

Come to think of it my team has missed winning either side by one stroke for three weeks in a row. We always come in second place out of 5 teams on both sides, and second place pays absolutely nothing. The other 4 teams seem to get hot on one side or the other and rotate winning one side while playing like crap on the other. We would win total score every week but that score doesn't count.

Not sure what that means other than we (mostly me) are playing consistently but not good enough, and I am not making enough birdies and eagles, which is what it takes to win those games. My son always seems to do his part and the other two guys can't be counted on at all, so it's on me, and I'm not getting it done. Not a lot I can do about it but I hate thinking back after a round and thinking about a few putts that could have gone in but didn't. I think I would rather lose by several strokes than one stroke.

I don't think I am gambling enough like I used to do. Makes a more consistent personal score but doesn't win any team money.

Edit: Changed my approach today and went back to a river boat gambler style of play and my team won the front nine (which we played second), lost the back nine, and demolished the other teams in the two ball shamble by 9 strokes.

As I thought my personal scores were all over the map but at least I went home with extra money in my pocket for a change.
Shot a 40 on the first nine, a 36 on the next nine, and a 33 on the final nine.
(Would be nice to have a driving range so I wouldn't have to figure it out as I go along). Ha ha!

I hit the ball the best I have in a long time. I rebuilt my ping driver last Monday  over at the range that one of my friends work at they have a little shop their. They have a swing weight scale and loft lie machine  I ordered a Grafalloy Prolaunch Blue 65 gram stiff shaft pured from Golfworks installed it at 44" swing weighted to D2. We may rebuild my irons also but he let me have a set of demo Ping G20 irons last Monday hit them at the range last Tuesday hit them well can work them either way and straight they go were I am aimed same thing Thursday.
I played them Sunday for the first time on a course.I went back to the range tonight and we checked the lies and lofts which are all good plus these clubs are a 1/2" shorter than mine. Now I will have to decide if I want to keep them or rebuild my Mizunos. He said he would sell me this set of demos discounted and will be about what it cost to reshaft, grip and swing weight my irons.

My biggest complaint about my mizunos is the weight and the KBS shafts which are great shafts just not form me. These pings stiff stock shaft I do not get that little hook on the end of my straight shots that I do with the Mizunos. Sunday I hit the 4 iron ping I have not hit a 4 iron in 2 years was on a 540 par five had 240 in with roll I was 15- 20 yards short of the green in the middle of the fairway.

She knows an important message is in the mail so early in the day she runs out to the mailbox. Hmmmnnn... too early I guess, nothing yet. Her neighbor is out doing yard work and wonders why shr would check this early. He continues to work and it's only 10 minutes later and here she comes out to check the box again. Odd, he thinks, she must really have something important on the way. Oh well, he returns to his yard work and she to her house.
Oh boy, only 5 minues later here she comes out again, this time appearing impatient and urgent. "Dang" she says to herself in disapointment! Out of curiousity and not able to help himself he calls out to her and approaches to see what's so important. She says she can't understand why nothings in the mailbox and he kindly suggests that normally the mail doesn't come until the afternoon. She responds, "But every time I check my computer it says, 'You've got mail'".

Surge excellent, that is what had happened to me at the end of last season, also what was hurting a bit was the bump, was causing me pain down the sides of my left leg, so I turned my left foot out a little more and and used my left knee and left hip to bump, hard to explain, but when I started to sit a bit on my right leg I could feel the power from the ground up, and started to hit the ball with some snap to it, felt good.

 Luvurbros,

Let me first say welcome back and best wishes for your game improvement. I am glad that your products have been restored and that your faith in Don has also been restored.

In regards to our/my response to your first post, I think you have missed the point. What ever you went through was not the fault of Don Trahan, Whom you severely took to task in your first post. It is nice that you have now apologized to him for that rant, However, the fact still remains that we and he have been here all along, ever since Jan 2011. Your failure to not be able to properly use the internet or search engines to find this site, is your failure and not his or ours.

What ever you went through could have all been avoided very early in Jan 2011 by simply using Google. I do not know how you finally found this site, but however or what ever process you used, Could have been used in Jan 2011 or each day since. That is all we are trying to say. We have merely tried to say you own an apology to Don, which you have now provided.

I hope that you and we can now put that chapter behind us as we move forward to better golf.

Welcome back Sir.

That's a weird coincidence. My last driver had a Grafalloy Blue shaft in it and driving the ball was the easiest part of the game for me back then. A few weeks ago A friend of mine had a Cobra with the same shaft in it and he wanted me to hit it. It was a couple of inches too long but I choked down a couple of inches and hit one long and straight down the middle and seemed easy as heck to hit. I hadn't had that feeling for a couple of years.
No telling what scores I could shoot if I could hit my driver as well as I did with my old driver.

Hi Surge, in 1950 I bought my first golf book.  It was Joe Novak's 8 Steps to Par
Golf.  One element of his instruction was the forward press to initiate the back
swing with a smooth transition in the total swing.  I have used it for some time
and found it made the backswing more comfortable.  Maybe you have touched
on this and wondered what your comments are in using this initial act.

That kind of shot would never held the green either. It was a elevated green I carried the shot pin high it just ran of the back edge and I chipped it back with 9 iron and it ran off the front edge . I can hit them shots when needed just did not call for it on 18.
I am back to hitting driver again pounded it down the middle on all tee shots except for 18.
It was so windy yesterday my group was on the putting green which sets behind and down below the first tee box and there was no wind we moved up to the tee box the wind was blowing  hard enough in your face to make your eyes water straight in your face.

Hole 1 is like 315 par 4 guys in front of us were barely getting drivers just inside of the 150 marker some of those guys usually hit 290 plus. I hit 3w down the left side of the fairway and it crossed the fairway ended up on top of a hill about 75 yards right and up above the fairway I had 169 in and hit 5 iron 20 yards short of the green behind a bunker pitched it up with a sw to 4 feet and made par. I planned on hitting 3W off all tees because I was not able to a driver this year until yesterday it came back as fast as it went away.

My problem area yesterday was 50 yards and in and putting it was hard to get puts to stay on line with the wind blowing and you could not putt the ball easy enough without them running 4-6 past luckily I made a bunch of puts coming back for pars. Left at least 4 birds on the course . Some of the A players turned scores higher than mine.

I couldn't find a question I thought you had asked about a week ago concerning the Vegas Tourny this year. Anyhow,
no I don't have absolute confirmation on the dates yet, but based on the fact that Surge plans to have it on the week leading up to the JT PGA tourny that DJ always plays in it would fall on the last day or two of Sept. and the first couple of Oct. Hope I wasn't getting ahead of Surge and his plans.
Anyway, don't by your plane fair yet but save for the trip and tourny. .........."wait for it.......wait for it.......!"

I'm glad the folks here at SwingSurgeon.com got you your products. I hope your game returns to pain-free, quality golf and I advise you to delete any links you have to Revolution Golf if you want to avoid any future confusion. Nice to hear you had a good day ball striking Mike. I recently made a switch to my 9 degree Nickent driver and a 55 gram X Aldila DVS shaft. That along with focusing on keeping it 3/4's has produced some straighter drives that are heading down the middle more often. It plays stiffer than my previous shaft but is currently helping me get clean centered strikes and a more peircing ball flight.
Hey, if those Pings are getting it done for you buy'em quick!

Mike,
I had a similar 100 yard shot into a strong wind the other day and what I did was hit a cut off 8 iron low and straight and it came off awesome some 15 feet from the hole. It takes some convincing to forget about the wedge into that kind of wind and hit that low cut off shot instead. Surge covers it in his working the ball video.
I'm with you on the putting and chipping. I need to spend at least 3/4's of my practice with the wedges and putter. Last week it killed me how many 5/6 footers I missed. I have good days and bad putting but Those putts are the difference in breaking 80 or not for me. Playing in the wind here is common. 22 mph? Unfortunately we get that and much more especially in the spring (right now). Last week I actually benifited by playing in the wind. I've always been a fairly good wind player but something really clicked for me the last couple of weeks. I practice Surges advice to tee the ball relatively high and keep the weight level (not right PLHR) when playing into the wind and swing level while really making sure I don't get past 3/4's on the backswing. I guess you could say it forces me to keep the whole swing very compact. As a result I have been hitting some really sloid and straight drives lately.
I decided to just pretend it's windy ALL the time and see if I could improve my over all consistency off the tee and on all other shots really. The results have been telling. I parred the toughest par 5 (for me) this morning for the first time in quite a while. It was all predicated by my first shot (my drive) being straight and relatively long and down the middle. It amazed me how far and straight we can be with a 3/4 swing off the tee. There is such a temptation to "let the big dog eat" off the tee and overswing that I have really had to make myself keep it 3/4's. I have only given up a few yards by doing so because I am getting more centered contact and I am getting some roll because of being in the fairway. But boy is it worth it to have a second shot from the short grass.

Surge Nation

Hey folks.  Well, I dodged the bullet so far today.  I was out doing an inspection in the metro when the twister came through.  The storm went right over my place.  The twister came down when the storm was 6 miles past my place.  It went right through the area where I lived until last June.  It tore up a lot of stuff and my old Home Depot.

When I got home, there was water on my floor from some roof damage.  They got the power back on and just got internet access back.

The next round is just starting to arrive at my place now.  Really big system they say will go right over me.  They are saying baseball sized hail and 70 mph winds are likely.  The radar is showing it is almost here.  The wind is howling and the rain is really hard right now.  They are just now saying that there is an ever worse system right behind this one.  The radar is showing a couple of hooks that are usually indicative of possible twisters.

And, that ain't the worst of it.  They are saying that early  tomorrow afternoon could be the worst weather day so far.  We are expected to get a hugh super cell that could give us a dozen twisters running around at the same time.

Keep us in your prayers.

Keeping it vertical, and on my knees, in Oklahoma,
Dick

Robert,
Well said by you and Terry. I would add just a liitle emphasis to your comment by saying that indeed Don was apportioned only a fraction of the thousands of e-mail addresses he formerly had at the end of 2010.
There were literally thousands of Surgeites that he and his staff were unable to contact because all those addresses were being selfishly held by that former partner. A travesty among the many at the time.
As Terry said and it could be said likely of many of the older "low tech" followers, if they only knew how to navigate the web and Goggle the words "Don Trahan" they would have likely found Don by January of 2011.
Actually if this gentlemen Luvurbros was a regular even on the Old site many of us gave warnings and messages for several weeks until the last of us were banned so just by being attentive and alert he would have gotten the news. Still I don't blame him and the full blame still belongs on the jack asses on Revolution Golf for a genuine lack of fairness and honesty.

Brutal wind Mike,
We have days like that frequently. I rarely ever let the weather effect whether I play or not. I'm a bit nuts that way. I figure it will mean less players on the course. Using Don's ideas about how to hit knock down shots helps alot. I do know that sometimes it is just no longer enjoyable. Actually for me putting is the most challenging part of the game when it's super windy. We often give each other anything under 4 feet when it's ridiculous out there.

My G10 driver is 9* and that shaft gives it a nice ball flight It gets higher as it goes and comes back down the same way.It well be interesting when it gets dryer out how much it will roll out its at least 20 yards longer carry than my wishon 11* driver. and the easiest driver I have hit.
The irons are also I am swinging at 80% and getting my normal distance. I can go at them and get an extra 10- 15 yards out of them if need it.

Mr. Birka-White,

Perhaps before you go flying off like a maniac, you'd like to hear some of the facts of what happened and who made you feel so taken advantage of. In December of 2010, Surge and his former marketing partners in Peak Performance Golf had a falling out over the direction they wanted to take the site. In the settlement that followed legal arbitration, his former partners were allowed to continue operating the old site and turned it into Revolution Golf, but did not bother to tell anyone that Don Trahan and his teachings were no longer part of that site. They also didn't tell anyone where Don went with his teachings. The court only allowed Don access to a limited number of the subscribers' information over time to inform them of the new site and how to get back all of what they had originally paid for.

So, Don isn't to blame for Revolution Golf. And Don isn't to blame for what happened to your game when his former partners completely reversed the teachings that so helped you previously. If you want your original videos back and to get back to the swing that helped your game so much, contact customer support (link at the top right of every page) with proof of your original purchase and they'll walk you through the registration and get you everything you've paid for.

You were the victim of people I consider to be unscrupulous, but Don Trahan and the folks at this site were not the ones responsible. Take a breath, calm down, and welcome to where the real Peak Performance Golf Swing is taught.
