Tommy Shields is a 77-year old Canadian from London, Ontario who is having problems with a couple of clubs in his set of senior clubs.
"I have a set of [a respected OEM that specializes in senior clubs] with two hybrids (#s 3 & 4). I cannot hit them very well; is there anything special about playing them as to be different in the ball placement? Thanking you in advance, Tommy
P.S. I watch all of your tips the 3/4 swing has changed my game. I still have a high handcap of 32 that I do play to at 77 years old; I keep on trying but those one or two bad holes per round hurt!"
Well, Tommy, since you don't say anything about hitting your other clubs poorly, my first thought is that you should look more closely at your hybrids than at what you are doing wrong with your swing. Hybrids are an intersting and valuable innovation that have become very popular in recent years. Usually they are designed to replace ones longer irons or, in some case, fairway woods. The problem, as I see it, is that many people can't immediately tell whether they are holding a hybrid-iron replacement club or a hybrid-fairway wood replacement because the head shapes are somewhere in between what we are used to seeing in woods and irons. Even the numbering system doesn't help much: are your #3 and #4 hybrids made to replace your #3 and #4 fairway woods or your #3 and #4 irons?
One way to tell is to compare them to your last set, if you still have them to see what club length they come closest to. That may tell you if they are replacements for your woods or your irons. Best of all, try to find a qualified club fiitter near where you live and have them checked out against your swing. It may be that the shaft isn't right for your swing speed. We need to remember that as we age, there is an unavoidable loss of club head speed and we need to make sure our equipment is matched to the reality of our swing chartacteristics.
Best of luck to you, Tommy!
Keep it vertical!

McIlroy from Northern Ireland
McIlroy from Northern Ireland wins and Scot Ramsay wins the European Master's in Switzerland. Hmm! Looking forward to the Ryder cup even more. Some great golf in prospect.May the best team win, whichever it is.
Looks like with sets of
Looks like with sets of hybrids and even multiple fairway woods becoming common place they would just change the sign to:
"Use enough common sense to not hit the ball off of the range".
LOL
Have you tried choking up
Have you tried choking up slightly on the hybrids? Also, maybe you should check that you're not playing the ball too far forward with them.
I'm the one who should
I'm the one who should apologize. That's what happens when I answer on my phone while not viewing the blog on line. I'm sure what ever you answered was fine. Don't worry about my toes, they're numb anyhow! Lol!
Wow, thanks for posting that
Wow, thanks for posting that Steve. No I hadn't seen that one yet. I agree that he is a 'man of faith'. That certainly was and is my impression also the two times I was able to spend time on the tee with Surge. He is a lot more than golf. I talked politics a bit with Don and the view of the world. Heady deep stuff not for this blog. Let's just say he (like myself) is conservative and has not been thrilled with the hope and changes happening in America.
BTW Steve, did you get a lot of rain in your area too? That was a heck of a storm. N.O. will be wet for a long time. more of a swamp now rather than a neighborhood.
On the "tempo" theme:Almost
On the "tempo" theme:
Almost every time my short game goes bad it's because I lose my tempo either on putting or chipping (or both).
We all occasionally lose it with the long game, especially when trying to bite off more than we can chew on a shot, but it's easy to not notice the tempo in the short game.
I have gone days at a time wondering what's wrong until it finally dawns on me what it is.
Know the feeling only too
Know the feeling only too well. Swung on the deck this afternoon. Concentrated on keeping the lead arm straight whilst taking my grip.Seemed OK. Then noted that I had been bending that lead arm slightly in the backswing lift up to the BUS!!! As soon as I concentrated on keeping that arm straight [but relaxed] in the backswing, Bingo! good swing burning the mat.
Noted on Thurs/Fri's golf, that I was hitting the ball much better. I had deliberately slowed down the swing just a little. If I do swing too quickly, I tend not to reach the top of the BUS and it ends up an arms only swing : - ( Play on Wed with luck : - ] Have a good start to the week.DH
