Controlling Tempo & Timing

Wed, 04/04/2012 - 23:48 -- Don Trahan

When it comes to the continuity of flow in a golf swing, many people think that there should be a pause at the top of the backswing. Harold sent in a question that pertained to this very subject and asked that I address it in a daily video.

"Just got through reading the myth series in the current April issue of Golf magazine. Myth 1, go low & slow. Myth 2 pause at the top. Those two items would seem a good daily video to cover since I have a problem with my takeaway. My normal takeaway is fast and it at times causes problems with ball contact. When I try to slow it down or pause at the top, that causes fat or thin shots. I need to find a good takeaway and smooth rhythm to my swing. How is the best way to do this. Thanks, Harold."

Today's video should help Harold and anyone else having trouble with finding a good flow to their golf swing. I've seen some people who like to hum a rhythm in their head in order to have a consistent swing thought on each shot. This is one area of the golf swing that may require you to feel out what works best for you. Nevertheless, each situation on the golf course reflects different amounts of pressure in a round, so it's up to you to repeat a routine that calms your nerves and results in good shot making.

Keep it vertical,

The Surge!

Bob,
My sister showed that a bald head is the sign of a brave fighter. There is no indignity in that.
My thoughts and prayers are with your family.
Glad to hear of your continuing success at school.

Robert,

Doing some catching up on the blog.

You have my prayers for your daughter and family. My sister went through the same think a few years back and is still with us. You are right, cancer is a respecter of none and really sucks.

If you put your swings on U-Tube and post the link to it somebody will give you some ideas about why you are doing that.

Probably a problem of posture at set up (including balance and weight distribution) or an attempt to make the back swing too long, or both.

Total speculation here about set up:
Too much weight may be on your heels.
Your legs too straight.
Bent over at the waist too much instead of accordion down.
Back slumped.
Not maintaining stable outward pressure on the knees.

I think John Novosel's Tour Tempo is very compatible with the Surge Swing.  I recently purchased the MP3 tempo tones and have been practicing with it lately with good effect.  I've added about 4 mph to my swing speed which translates to 10-12 additional yards with no loss of accuracy.

I'm sure the Surge swings at or very close to the 3 to 1 ratio. I'd bet that he is probably in the 18-6 or 21-7 range.  I personally use the 24-8 tempo and had to speed up my backswing to achieve this.

Thanks for the update Robert. The prayers will continue. It is good news that the surgery went well. The chemo and radiation are tough, but the hair will grow back. The main thing is to have all of the cancer gone. God bless.

You have my utmost support and prayers.  I do wear pink occasionally, in fact wore it yesterday. I wonder how many people could tell me the color associated with Lung cancer?  Probably not many.  Most people don't even know that there are colors associated with the other types of cancer.  My best to you and your daughter!

Robert, I too will be joining in prayer.

You are not alone, nor is she is alone.

I will find something with pink in it
and wear it proudly and in support.

I'm with Steve on this. If we can't see it, it's hard to figure out what's going on, but as Surge always says, "The setup determines the motion." If you're moving like that, it's most likely due to something you're doing at setup that makes your body think that's necessary.

Surge, your'e just getting better and better. These daily videos are just gems and I sense over the last few months that you have cottoned on to responding to issues
being discussed on the blog and elswhere as against trying to pick subjects that
you think maybe important. There are literally thousands of us out here which need
some direction, based on there unique problem and you respond magnificently.

You said it, "Love & Marriage, Horse & Carriage, Timing & Tempo" all have to go together.

Surge, Have you, Greg, or Dave ever looked at John Novosel's concept of "Tour Tempo"  to assesss its compatibility with the PPGS. I studied it several years ago, before finding the Surge swing. I have the videos and the MP3 tempo tones, and I  wonder if one of the faster tempos might be a match with PPGS? The entire concept rests on the fact that all great players have had a 3-to-1 tempo ratio between their backswing and forward (FUS) swing. Would love to get your take on it.

Sorry to hear that about your daughter. My aunty had breast cancer a few years back and had a mastectomy. I'm sure your daughter will pull through.
I don't have any pink clothes with me but my white scottish skin goes pink when I'm out in the sun, does that count?

Thanks for all of your support and prayers.  Maylyn is out of surgery and in the recovery room.  My wife and son in law are with her and are keeping me posted on her progress.  They say that the doctors got all of the cancerous tissue that they could find, but she still lost a lot of her right breast including the nipple.  She will have to undergo chemo and radiation treatments and will suffer the loss of her hair.

I'll be shaving my head in the near future, and we will suffer the indignity together.

Surge,

Timely tip today.  I normally play a short par 58 course, but decided today to take on a tough, for me, par 72 for the first time this year.  Starter teamed me up with 3 young guys whose combined age fell a year short my young 69. ;0)

After introducing themselves they all headed to the back tees and I jokingly said I'd have to play from the "baby" tees up front.  These kids were all long bombers, but often wrong.  I had decided beforehand to just try to keep a smooth tempo and play within myself, so I had to fight the feeling to go for it to try to "keep up" with the young guns.  All of them were nice kinds and we had some fun.

Bottom line...46-42=88 on a course where my best previous score was 96 with missing 6 putts under 10 ft.  I hit 11 of 14 fairways and the misses were all reasonable misses.  Fairway woods were not great on the front 9 as I never use them on the short course, but started to come around on the back. " Playing it forward " as you advocated last year made the round much more enjoyable as I had at least 4 reasonable birdie chances on holes I never reach in regulation.

The highlight of my day came on the 18th hole.  A long par 4 that I never reach in 2 and usually try to get my third short close from about 100 yards.  I hit my 3 wood to about 12 feet and just missed a birdie putt and parred the hole.  Finished the round with a smile.

The 3 kids were comparing scores and asked what I shot and I replied 88.  The one keeping score said "well, you kicked our butts, our lowest was 92."  I told them they were a good luck charm as I'd never shot below 96 on this course.

I'm a firm believer in giving credit where credit is due.  PPGS has saved my back and has definitely improved my game.  Am I there yet?  No, but I get a little closer each time out.  Doc deserves a bit of credit for todays round as well,  His arrow was straight off the tee as long as the indian lined up and excuted a decent swing.  The "young guns" asked if I ever got bored hitting straight tee shots.  Thanks, Doc.

Surge, in todays lingo, "You da Man."

Hi Guys,

Here's a quick school update from the Professional Golfers Career College.  The second semester is drawing to a  close in the next few days and I have straight A's.  I'm trying my best to do you all proud.

On a serious note, our oldest daughter goes under the knife tomorrow.  Breast cancer really sucks, and we are all very concerned.  Please keep her in your prayers during the next few days, that she makes a quick and full recovery.

I've been wearing pink golf shirts and a pink hat for the past three weeks, ever since we got the bad news.  My mantra is "fight like a girl!"  Please wear pink once in awhile to show support, and if anybody asks, tell them that Real Men Wear Pink.

Hit'em Long and Straight,
Bob

Hi Surge,

I have played golf for 36 years, played to five for ten years and now, just about to reach 65 I am 8.4 and don't want to go to 9.  Watching myself on video I have a major fault that no professional as ever been able to cure.  Looking at me from the front my head goes up several inches in the back swing and looking at me from the side my rear end seems to go towards the ball and the distance my butt travels is the same as my head going up! As you say, "It is all joined together|". I think this is called "loss of spine angle".  Can you give me a tip to stop this?  I have bought the course but I can't find anything specifically about this.

Thanks,

Andrew Bryan
