Alternative To Rolling Over Ankle

Fri, 02/10/2012 - 19:52 -- Don Trahan

Last week I talked about the importance of having footwear that allows you to roll your front foot over the ankle. Before a round or practice session, I even like to practice this motion to stretch out the area before I play. But, what if you can't roll your ankle at all? This is the case with one Surgite who wrote in that his ankle has been surgically fused so he's unable to have that same foot action.

Fortunately, there's an alternative to actually rolling your front foot. In the Peak Performance Golf Swing, we flare our feet out at least 30 degrees. For those of you who can't roll your front foot over the ankle, simply flare your front foot out wider than 30 degrees to a point that you can swing up to a T-finish while maintaining your balance. This point will be different for everyone but this way you can keep a flat footed stance during your follow through to finish, and also alleviate any unwanted pressure on the knee. Play around with it and see what best suits you. However, I will warn you that the wider you flare the front foot, the more you will have to back that foot away from the initial toe line because you will lose your balance points without this adjustment. In the video, I demonstrate all of the different angles and where you need to place your feet accordingly.

So, if you're physically unable to perform this slight rolling of the front foot, try flaring your front foot outward and you'll see a lot more consistency in your golf game!

Keep it vertical,

The Surge!

Hello Tom, Yes I have been pretty much down on golf for a while mainly because I think I put a lot in, everyday for the last 18 months I have done something golf related and the results have been poor. What was frustrating is when you think you are making changes but the results and swing are the same! Its a killer....
Today was the first time my swing changed or clicked in a big way, again I just hope I can find it again and improve on it and hopefully take it on to the course improving, on the course will be the real tester.

But I have to reign myself in and not get to carried away, it was exciting though!

Had a good day on the golf course. 41/41 82. Goal still under 80 each time out but I'm close, oh so close! Good news? 8 pars. did miss 3 birdy putts in the 7-10  foot range and 3 par putts of 6-10 range. Just a few more putts and 79's will be more common.
Did have a couple of nice up and downs for par. The coolest thing today though was hitting the flag from 205 with my 3 wood. Bounced 12 feet away and I missed the bird but the two footer for par still felt good. 34 putts today.Too many. My goal is 30 and that would have meant 78 today. I will get there soon. Thanks to everyone for those great putting tips the other day. I'm employing several ideas and it'll happen soon.

I heard it.

It takes me no longer to putt with a line on my ball than it did before I put a line on my ball.
(And it never took me very long either way).

Maybe some people do take to long, but the ones I see that take too long are the ones that read the green from every possible view, talk it over with the caddy, have him read the putt,  get over the ball, back off and take another look, and finally roll the putt, none of which had anything to do with a line on the ball so they need to make a rule against any of that. (Sarcasm).

Another reason for backing off of a putt is that sometimes the intermediate target that was visible from behind the putt gets lost after walking up and taking the stance. That is the one and only time that I ever back off of a putt. Sometimes I don't even then but when I don't back off and find my target again it's pretty much an automatic miss.

So I guess they would need to make intermediate targets illegal too. ;-)

Another factor is that before most of us started putting a line on the ball many of us used the logo on the ball as the line. I guess the logo would have to be eliminated too. ;-)

Heck lets just go back to playing it as it lies on the green, stymies, pitch marks and all.

LOL, Momma didn't raise no fools that lived?

Reminds me of the first year I learned the game.  Went out in Feb wrapped up looking like the Pillsbury doughboy, couldn't put a tee in the ground with a hammer, split a ball in half on the second tee, but....I got at least 75 yard of roll...errr more like skid on my tee shots.  Did wonders for my ego, so it was worth it.

Some might call me an addict, but I prefer enthusiast. ;0))

Why can't it be "grip down the shaft"?  It's either that or cut it off and just cutting it off isn't that good an idea either unless it's done by someone who knows what they're doing. The ability to swing a club vertically and not stick it in the ground on the down swing and approach to the ball is directly proportional to the length of the club and arm swinging it.

Phil played about as well as possible and when he's making 25 foot putts like that he's going to be hard to beat.

I thought it was over for Tiger when he missed the 2 footer on 7. Even though there was still plenty of time at that point I thought it would drag up too many recent demons to overcome.

I am just curious. I have no doubt that they can teach.
It will be interesting to take a lesson and see what the return suggestions would be for me I will have to decide whom to pick I am leaning towards Don but could get quite costly the way I am currently swinging the club.
I need to get some new video. I do not have any face on yet.
Might venture out this weekend will have to see how crappy the weather is going to get.

 Mike,

If you motorize it, it will be easier to utilize on the course. Just add a rack for your bag to the back. A properly attached swivel arm will still allow you to check emails in between shots. Remember, better golf is just a fit away.
Retro fit that chair.

Well, I guess old man winter tracked all my posts talking about how he was skipping us this year and figured out where Ok is.  The high here today was in the 20s.  The wind chill is supposed to be -1 in the morning, and then up to 2" of the white stuff before Monday at noon.  Then it is supposed to change to freezing rain.  GREAT.  The other side of the coin is that by Wednesday back to the upper 40s or lower 50s.  I can play fine in that.

Anyway, it is still better than a lot of places will have it.

Keeping it vertical, and hiding in the cabin, in Oklahoma,

The first year I played I didn't have a net (didn't even know they made them) but I hung an old mattress on the front of the barn and set up a spotlight so I could hit the ball at night. I was often still out hitting balls at midnight.

I was stubborn enough that I was going to achieve my goal of shooting par come Hell or high water.

I guess I need to get a new goal but I haven't figured out one yet that motivates me but is achievable.

Great well thought out response. You should think about adding this to the video lesson page some how if it is feasible. I think the pricing of the lessons are appropriate.I am seriously looking at doing a lesson just need to get some face on video I am going to go ahead and buy the locker space in the mean time.

Hey Dick....who would have thot that 48 would be bliss?
The sun always returns. Always. So until then, to my friends in the Nation:
keep smiling and get your D one way or another.

If you have enough sun, lucky you. If not, vit. D(3)caps are
really inexpensive and D3 is essential in SO many ways.
The emerging science is startling about what happens
when you don't get enough D.

So enough of that. DJ, nice bird on 2.
Ya never know what might happen.

BTW...is it just me, or does it look like Tiger has scaled
down his swing just a bit? The words "quieted down" seem to
come to mind. The man is still pretty freakin' good.

It's one of those that you just walk off and act like you could do it every time. ;-)

Some guys were shooting a 357 magnum at a Coke can full of water one night at the mine from about 150 yards. After they shot at it for a while and never hit it one of them handed me the gun and told me to try it.
I hit it the first shot and handed it back.
To this day those guys think I am a heck of a shot with a pistol and I never bothered to tell them that I couldn't have hit that can again with 100 more tries. ;-)

I am not sure what the heck happened from the end of Oct to now with my swing but its not even close . Did play once in December but other than that did not touch a club for 2 months which is part of the problem.

Good tips as always surge - what I like about your methods is it all centers around keeping the swing in front of you down the line. I've noticed that if I go up the tree & keep my body moving then my hips clear, my left knee bends a little, & I have a nice automatic roll to my left ankle (didn't Arnie always have that look) just as you describe. Also, any point you ever make always supports all of your other points all of the time whereas so many other teching methods run into contradictions it seems most of the time. I guess that's why DJ always seems to make back up near the top! Thanks for all you do

Doc, unfortunately you assume incorrectly. My problem was mostly moving my head up and down, and dropping my chin during the BUS. Another part, because I am left-eye dominant, was turning slightly to the right. I knew I was doing it based on my videos, but thought I had corrected it. I don't have a problem with my head moving too much back (swaying).

Welcome back from the valley of despair, I, have been there many times myself. This game can certainly be a roller coaster ride at times. Glad to hear you are now feeling a sense of hope and joy with your swing.

Wish I could practice my swing. About 3 more weeks in the cast. I'm getting anxious though. Here's what I'm hoping for when the cast comes off.  Relative to golf though.

Rodger,

Sorry, I've been working on another project tonight and haven't been keeping up with y'all. Let me take a stab at the answers to your questions.

1. Yes the locker "rental" is a one-time annual fee that will be renewable at the end of 12 months if you want to keep going. We've negotiated with our partner to get a special rate of $4.95 for the first 250 players to rent a locker. Normal price is $14.95 per year.

2. Our instructors have been trained to analyze your swing completely so if you have 3-4 things to work on, they are likely going to discuss all of those points in the same lesson. However, if one or two things really stand out, I am sure they will have you focus on those first. The beauty of this kind of lesson, as opposed to one where you and the instructor spend an hour on the practice tee and you have to remember what he/she told you, is that you get a recorded soundtrack over the top of your original swing video that you can play as often as you like. So if you are like me, and things don't always sink in on the first pass through the ears, then this type of lesson should really be worthwhile.

3. Right now, we only have a single price per lesson for each level of instructor. We have done our utmost to keep our prices as low as possible and considering the costs of the technology involved not only with the Online Golf Lesson program, but the whole website in general, we don't think offering lessons for as low as $38.99 is out of line. Don is a most generous man and offers a ton of instruction for free, but a global website of this magnitude costs many tens of thousands of dollars PER MONTH to operate so we gotta pay the bills around here somehow! LOL. We may come out with a promotional package at some point but we do not have any concrete plans to do so at present.

4. With regard to your question about an instructor doing a video on exactly what an online lesson is, go back to the Online Golf Lesson page and scroll down to the bottom. Dave Seeman posted an actual lesson he did for one of his students for one and all to see. While every Online Golf Lesson will be unique (because y'all are so unique!) you can expect something along the lines of this young lady's lesson if you do end up buying one. When you submit your videos, you will have the opportunity to send a message along with it. That way, if you have a particular concern, or if you have a physical limitation, you can let your instructor know and he will take that into consideration when he coaches your swing.

5. With regard to picking an instructor--here are my thoughts. First off, every one of the five is an experienced PGA Professional who has been teaching at least 15 years. We've posted their bios under their pictures on the Online Golf Lesson page. They've been thoroughly trained in how to give a proper digital lesson (because it's a different animal from an on-the-practice-tee type of lesson) and they have had to pass muster with Surge before earning this extra certification. Furthermore, EVERY lesson will be reviewed by Dave Seeman or Surge before it is released back to the student and if they think the instructor missed something important, the lesson will be redone, re-reviewed and then sent on to our student. I don't know of anyone going to this level of scrutiny to ensure that the product you get back is top notch stuff. But that's Don Trahan for you.

So if after reviewing their backgrounds, you still can't make up your mind, I would suggest taking the "First Available Instructor" option for a guaranteed price of just $38.99. It's kind of like playing "instructor pot luck" in one way, but who knows, you may get Dave Seeman or Surge and if you do, they will be doing your lesson for the advertised price and not their normal rate if you were to ask for them by name. We put this option in to help us balance the work load among all the instructors but I think it could be a lot of fun for those that elect to go this way--it's similar to buying a lottery ticket, but one with a lot better odds. Besides, if you want to try another instructor in the future, you will be free to select whomever you want at any time.

Hope this helps!

Of course Phil is a Callaway guy and said that he is playing better in part due to his new Razre driver and the Hex Black golf ball. Not that it would be the right ball for me any way but for fun I looked it up. I am considering your online lesson system. Just curios how the instructors are going to approach the return lesson. Are they going to suggest 1 main thing to work before moving on or 3 -4 things in one lesson. I guess were I am going I think sometimes when we take a lesson and get 3 or 4 things to work on we tend to get brain overload if you know what I mean. Is the locker fee a yearly fee and are they going to have packages deals were you get 5 for the price of 4 or anything like that.
It would be nice if one of the instructors would do a short video of how the whole thing is going to work are did I miss that

Sounds like the time I was bowling and left a baby split (3-10 for those who don't know--the easiest split to covert). I bet a friend a case of beer that I could put the ball between them without touching either one. I'd seen it done once, so I knew it was possible. Stepped up and did it. Probably could never do it again. :)

Great topic today, Surge.  I've found the additional front foot flare has helped me with a few things that I struggle with.  I'm better able to keep my left knee from collapsing in the BUS which allows me to get closer to vertical and restricts my turn.  The FUS to a full T finish happens much more naturally as well.

Yep. My one-and-only chance to play the Olympic Club in SFO, I played a similar shot. That was back in my youth when (a) I practiced left-handed chipping regularly and (b) I was too stupid to know I couldn't do it. My result was actually fairly similar to Pavin's. Just a few more feet from the hole.

The green was so hard that I hit a lob shot with my 56* and it went about 40' high.  It came down and landed about 5' short of the pin.  It bounced up and over the flag.
