Sometimes when I refer to where my club is, I use a clock as a reference point. 12 o'clock is one position that I mention frequently, because this is where the club should be positioned at the top of your backswing. But remember, this is when the camera is positioned down the line, not face-on. If the camera is positioned face-on, then my club will line up more with 1 o'clock at the top of my backswing (which is a 3/4 backswing). In today's daily, I wanted to talk about the whole takeaway as well as the positions of the clock in relation to camera angle. I've drawn in a clock on the video to really help you visualize what I mean.
Now that you've seen a detailed explanation of the clock's reference points, let's focus on the takeaway. It starts with getting the club into the catcher's mitt, toe up. Only turn as far as your toe line, then it's all lift. I want to stress that even though I've given you checkpoints throughout the takeaway, remember that it must be a smooth, one-piece motion. Each step blends seamlessly into the next for a perfect Surge Swing takeaway and backswing. If you start thinking about each position individually while you're taking the club back, you won't get the best results. Put it all together and make a good swing!
Keep it vertical,
The Surge!

Personally, I have had much more consistent results while maintaining the triangle of the club/arm shoulder 'unit' on the takeaway not thinking about using the hands at all. The less my hands are involved the better. The more I keep it all firm and therefore not wrist cock at all i seem to be able to minimize the backswing to only 3/4's much more easily and get back to the ball square again more consistently. Having my grip/hands in a more nuetral to even slightly weak position has also accomodated a more compact and vertical 3/4 swing. Over all this gives me the fewer angles we seek and a more reliable swing that still carries enough power and accuracy.
That's pretty much the same

Ice plant doesn't grow as well here in the high desert as it does in the coastal hills of California. When I lived in the SF Bay Area, a lot of courses used it as ground cover around the edges of the course as it is a very low maintenance plant there. I always hated if a ball landed in it as it could easily be two strokes to get it out, assuming you could find your ball.

Thanks for not mentioning who won Steve. Out here on the West coast there was no way I was going to watch at mid- night having to work this morning.(we are exactly 12 hours behind theÃÂ Middle East).ÃÂ I don't get typical weekends off like most of the world otherwiseÃÂ I would have stayed up all night watching as I normally do during the British Open.
In any case I took no chances this morning during the replay I made sure i did not watch any normal tv or turn my computer on till now.
YesÃÂ I hope DJ gets on track soon. i have a feeling he will before long.
One things for sure, no one makes a living out of that thick rough they had.
I was feeling his pain. and as i said in my other post, he actually played decent getting pars over the last 14 holes inspite of poor driving. Rock was solid for sure. Congrats to him.

Robert, although I fully
Robert, although I fully agree with most of what is said, I have to question one point - the angle of the shaft with the arms at 9 o'clock. If I maintain my arm-to-shaft angle (keep my wrist angle the same as address), my shaft does not reach 12 o'clock until the left (forward) arm reaches 9:30, at which point my club "should be" vertical in both the down-the-line and face-on views. I make some of my best swings at this point and, for me, that is a 3/4 swing. If I go to 10 o'clock (face on), my shaft does go to about 1 o'clock. I believe that most people trying to learn the PPG swing would do quite well starting by getting to 12 o'clock in both views while maintain the address wrist angle throughout. Once the swing works well with those parameters, then one should begin slightly extending the BUS until a point is reached that starts pulling the head, torso, spine, etc. out of position. Back off slightly from that point and one will have reached the true top of the BUS, which will most likely be different for everyone. This will probably be quite difficult for most rotational and former rotational swingers to deal with.
I noticed in the replays that
I noticed in the replays that he took a deep divot. That increases the spin and gets a fair launch angle. The problem is that hitting down that steeply doesn't let him create the "dead spin" shot that would have stopped the ball with out backing up.
A big advantage to the Surge action is the shallow divots let us hit high shots that land like a butterfly with sore feet.

Keith,
Keith,
Hang in there! We hope to launch our new online golf lesson program by Friday of this week. You will be able to purchase a lesson for as little as $39.95 and then send us videos of your swing from a face-on and down-the-line perspective and it will be analyzed by a specially trained PPGS Instructor and then returned to you within 48 hours. Your "coached up" video will be annotated with lines, etc. as necessary and the instructor will add a voice track that will focus on where you are having issues and what you should do to fix it.
We feel these lessons are every bit as good as one you would get from a local instructor AND they have the added benefit of being recorded so you can review the advice any time you want, as often as you want! This is a real boon to those of us who have a hard time remembering what we had for dinner yesterday, let alone what the pro told us in a lesson last week!
Best,

I do not recall when or where
I do not recall when or where it first started, seems like forever. My Thursday group have adopted and boldly claim, "That's an impossible putt" when we miss a difficult short one. This automatically starts a line with the other three trying the putt. If nobody makes it, it is then officially classified as an impossible to make putt. There is no score difference or advantage in the outcome, other than bragging rights if you happen to make it on your one attempt, and off course the derission of the first claimant. One wants to be fairly sureÃÂ the other three will also miss, beforeÃÂ making the claim, lest they be proven wrong.ÃÂ

Keith,
First of all i'd like to tell you I do feel your pain. I have had lots of times when I feel like I have and then lost it and got it again. You are in a slump. I went back to take a look at your last sveral posts. Certainly the slice/fade when you want straight is unsettling. I looked at your you tube link and saw there is no swing posted for us to make any suggestions. Not sure what to tell you. As you say, it would be ideal if you could see a PGGS instructor. I know Doc has offered to give swing help to some extent if you personally e mail him and explain what's going on and or better yet post your swing from face on and down the line. additionally hopefully they will get their on line program up and running soon as planned.
I will say that as a former lifetime slicer I know what causes the slice to the point I could teach it!! lol!
You must (based on physics) have to be doing alot of the same over the top and across moves if you still slice it. I know the backswing is important but as Surge and DJ have said, the results happen in our forward swing. That's why often the simple answer is to just swing up to the T finish and just focus on the balanced finish. Amazing sometimes how a better finish can cure the over the top bcak and over move. For me, as you can trace from my last several comments on what I have done lately, I am more convinced than ever that my grip was too intense (tight), and I was carrying way too much tension and muscling it with my right side and shoulder from the top. Backing off and really shortening my swing (to really be 3/4's) along with a few other tweaks with my grip and over all attitude all have added up to more consistency, very rarely ever slicing any more. In fact seeing mostly straight to a draw lately.
Sure hope you can stick with it and find it.

I tend to concentrate on the position of my hands throughout the swing. If I have them in the right positions at setup, over the toe line, vertical to the top of the BUS, and back through the ball on the toe line, the club head will be where it is supposed to be at every point in the swing. When my hands are in the wrong place in space or oriented the wrong way (i.e. palms not perpendicular to the ground), I have no idea where the ball will go. But, you are correct that face-on position is up to each individual.
Hi All and Thanks for the
Hi All and Thanks for the help and encouragement your support is great! I guess I just gotta get my last session out of my head, I need a drastic change though as I have started hitting the toe and sky marks and toe with the driver. And with the irons more just ridiculously flying right like a shank or hitting the toe edge I don't know, its like a top but flies opposite to my set up position!
I am thinking of setting up a self help group in the UK so we can meet up periodically and help each other with our swings, this could be to a full day where we follow with a round of golf.
I live in Nottingham so is pretty central in the UK, would I have any support this folks? Cheers keith

Went to the range yesterday
Went to the range yesterday and today. Yesterday was pretty much the same old same old with the exception of getting to watch a touring Pro work on his game and his son was working on his game also. Today ended up much better than yesterday for me plus got to watch the Pro and his son again today.Anyway today I was hitting balls next the Pro minding my own business the owner of the range was there giving lesson in the lesson room when heÃÂ finished he a a former tour pro came out and was talking the Pro. I continued hitting ballsÃÂ and the owner says to me what are you trying to achieve with your swing and I explained this system to him and he said the reason he was asking was that he noticed that my arms were collapsing at the top and suggested that what I was doing was not going to work because of not being able to swing across my chest with a limited turn. What he said was that whether I was going to swing vertical are rotational that I need to make a full shoulder turn so I could lift with out the arms breaking down and to be able to keep the hands in front of my body and that I need to be in a width position with the hands away from my shoulders which would be a 3/4 swing from their it was up to me to either keep the club vertical or let it lay off a little to were the butt of the shaft would point at the target line and he said that allowing the shoulders to turn full for me would let my lower body work properly the tour pro agreed with him and said that he was going to suggest it yesterday.. He had me hit some some full shots making 90* shoulder turn and he was correct about the lower body I was able to bump and then turn were with less shoulder turn the left hip just wanted to turn and pull my right shoulder out. Anyway hit some really nice 5 irons today carrying them 190-195 norm 180 I hit a few drivers today also after his suggestion and was carrying them just short of the 285 sign.
I am not sure were I am going to end up with this but we shall see. i did not get any video today but did reluctantly uploaded some from two weeks ago and some from yesterday.

Steve thanks and LOL.
I have that video downloaded and saved on my computer for evidence. What you were getting at was turn the shoulders around the upper spine not around the waist maybe a good way to put it. I tried it a few times today at work just to have a excuse to get up from my desk for a few minutes at a time I agree with you on this and will be easier than making a full 90* turn and I do not see anyway to come over the top from this position. I will keep the 90* turn fix in the closet in case I need a bail out to go to in a couple of months if I do not get it. But I do not see it being a issue I should have put these videos up weeks ago.
I am going to move to the other end of the range were there is less people and more room so I can get some face on views this weekend this should be a fairly easy fix.ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ

As I mentioned to Steve, my right elbow was misbehaving in the backswing. Now that I recognize the issue, I can fix it. I am hoping to get on the course on Friday. Now I just need to find some time to get out to the range.
I have found this latest post
I have found this latest post more useful than the two anology that have been used, they have made me personallyÃÂ swing on a two plane with no smoothness what so ever, this has just been my experience with trying to master this swing.
With trying to put the anology to practise has made me swing all the faults you describe like over the top. I don't believe the in the mitt or toe line anology is any help at all in trying to explain to someone how to get the club inside.
In practise whenÃÂ Surge shows the two examples it doesn't bare much resemblance to the real swingÃÂ in my opinion, for a start on the FUS the club drops to a laid off position and doesn't take the path shown.
One thing thatÃÂ I have always thought about is if the club has to get in thisÃÂ laid off position which it does to get inside, then why don't we justÃÂ swing on the BUS to that very position instead of trying to get vertical and finding this position on the way down?
Now I know a vertical club is a light club but we get laid off on the FUS anyway.
No got my head around this thought yet.
It would be interesting to put a trace on the club head in some software and follow the path.

ÃÂ ÃÂ GUYS, I am back -- sort ofÃÂ ÃÂ Cataract surgery went well, thankfully.ÃÂ It appears that I will no longer need glasses, except maybe for reading.
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ The biggest effect on golf seems to be on alignment -- I have been left ey dominant all my life, but with the new lenses implants, I am now RIGHT eye dominant in the long and intermediate game, but LEFT eye dominant in the short game and putting.
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ This leads to a lot of drives and FW shots going well left of where I think I am aiming, but chip shot and putts missing to the right of "where I think they should go".ÃÂ From about the 7 iron though the wedges things are pretty much normal, which leads me to think it a vision and "adjustment to new vision" thing with alignment.ÃÂ I am told by others that it takes about 4 to 6 weeks for the brain to "sort it all out" and thinngs return to normal.
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ In the mean , life if tough for one who "lives or dies" on chipping and putting!! But I do see some signs of improvement - - First round after surgery -- poor chipping and putting resulted in 4 one-putts and 2 three putts for 34 total putts used.ÃÂ Today was 6 one putts, 0 three putts and a near chip in (about 3 inches from the cup).ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ Driving has been good - hit 11 fairways the first round, 12 today - decent distance but the average seems a little down. The real killer is the FW -- getting a open face, toe hits lately followed by over correcting with a soldi hit but ectremely left of what I thought was the target lin e -- like 40 to 50 yards left!
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ As a result, the scores are out of sight ! ;<((((
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ I really do look forward to "better days ahead" when the brain and the "new eyes" get on the same page!

Whatever example works for you is the example you need to follow.
Actually the club head does follow the path of through the mitt and up the tree. Any "laying off" of the club is something we need to fight against. If we are in the neighborhood of correct there will be very little laying off of the club and the palms will stay very close to perpendicular to the ground throughout the swing.
Never Quit, EVER!A couple of
Never Quit, EVER!
A couple of days ago, I was on the course and clueless would have been a kind way of putting some of the shots I played. Yesterday had the slowest round ever. A duo in front hitting multiple balls. They were behind a group of FIVE! That is unusual, but we were notÃÂ in too much of a hurry anyway.
A much better round than the previous one. Some very good shots, some OK, and the odd rubbish ones.
On two of the links below by TMedley, I was reminded of a couple of basics to show where the BUS is. I found yesterday that, when I began to skip the rock, my ball striking and direction were excellent.Checking my toe line in relationship to the target line, has made a big difference to my shots.
On a hole yesterday, I hit an OK tee shot, but had to play under the branch on a large overhanging branch. Hit a low punch shot, which landed 40 yds from the green. [didn't check my foot alignment] I pulled the SW mortar round shot, left of the green. It bounced on the down slope into deep rough about 5' short of pin high. Stepped in with the SW and said to myself, OK you got me into this mess, get me out of it. Big smile as I watched the SW chip hit the upslope on the edge of the green and roll across the down slope, into the hole!
Had I been negative, I could have been looking at a double or maybe triple bogie.
I will NOT return to being a rotational swinger.
Thanks to TMedley for the links which gave me a slightly different perspective to 'finding my place in space'. Do yourself a big favour Keith Kent, and go back to basics, as RReed says GBSAPS! Just do it.
I can't expect for everything to change after nigh on 35years of rotational brain washing. 15months, small potatoes. Good luck.
