Posture Is The Key To Good Timing

Wed, 08/08/2012 - 23:12 -- Don Trahan

I filmed a new video recently that I am calling The Ultimate Alignment Video that is in final editing at the moment. As usual, we shot it at Old South Golf Links in Bluffton, SC which gave me the opportunity to catch up with my old friend PPGS Certified Instructor, Greg MacDonell. After we finished the day's filming, Greg and I got to talking about what we've been seeing in recent golf schools that we've taught and we both had seen a rash of students with poor posture. This inspired us to do today's daily because, as everyone's mother surely has said to them on more than one occasion, "Posture matters!".

Posture is one of the five key aspects of The Setup and the principal method we teach to instill proper golf posture is what I have termed "The Accordion Effect".

If you search the Daily Video archives by using the Search box midway down the right-hand column on this page, you will find a wealth of other tips on this very subject. Suffice it to say, that if you don't execute The Accordion Effect properly there is little chance of getting your body out of the way so that your arms have a clear patch to get the clubhead on to the Aiming Line and keeping it there until after impact.

Keep it vertical!

That's what some people said the first time this video was shown.

For me, whats in the background makes no difference in my ability to pay attention.

SGW:

In Washington, the HIGH for the day was maybe 85 -- more like 80 most days -- for the first 2 or 3 days I felt like I was freezing!! lol -- specially after sundown  when it went to 45 or 50
Also on that "strange to me" golf course, my best round was a 92. And I am now the record holder for high score with a 13 on a par 5 -- 2 OB and 1 in the lake plus a 3 putt. OUCH!!   It is a strange hole -- the lake is right in the driving area -- forcing most to hit a mid iron from the tee, followed by a FW or hybrd to stay in the fairway with a wedge 3rd shot.

Suena como ya estás tan bueno como yo soy. A veces en los días buenos disparar bajo par, pero a veces no.

There's really no need to go into a long discussion about the technical limitations of Surge's equipment that he uses for these videos. Yes, it would be nice if he was so rich that he could have a professional crew follow him around for these dailies, but that's not the case.

Spot on. My game went all to pot due to operation on my left hand. Consequence: left hand little finger release and right hand now dominant. This caused a closed club face, no height and hooking. tried overhitig to compensate. Back to basics - set up and limit swing - now  hitting ball high and straight again.

I see two possibilities here. Either surge is just plain out lying to us, or the camera angle is distorting your view. Which choice do YOU think is more likely. To say pictures do not lie, is one of the biggest lies ever told.

que el sonido sea como si un buen jugador. No deje que Steve lleno, que es un buen jugador y sabe mucho de este giro.

EDIT

Pedro
You sound like you are a good player. Don't let Steve full you he is a good player and he knows a lot about this swing.

i'm still confused about the ball position. Greg's ball position looked more centered than yours Don. Not saying I disagree with your swing, I'm just saying it always looks like your ball position is a ball or two back of you where you say it is. And I'm looking at your heels, not your toes. thank you

Greg would have to be lying too. His ball position is virtually identical in relation to his heels in the video.

Ha ha! Thanks Mike, but only sometimes.
Sometimes my playing partners are shaking their head wondering how I did that (after a good shot) and sometimes my playing partners are shaking their head wondering how I did that (after a horrible shot).

At least I keep them guessing which me is going to show up. ;-)

Surge,

In todays video with Greg I noticed when both of you hit a ball at the end, the ball was more to the back of your stance, almost off your right heal. Could you comment on this?

Been there, done that. Sticking money in one's pocket is what is wrong with the world. too many people who don't care about anything but the bottom line that brings them a check.

Don,

I know you teach that the hands should end up near the forward ear (left for me) at the T-Finish.  I just came back from the range and for every near-perfect swing I made, my hands hit on the top of my head and I was looking through the triangle of my forearms.  When I get my hands next to my ear, I either hit a pull, pull-hook, or a pull-fade.  Is this one of those individual adjustments to the PPGS?  I feel like I'm swinging almost perfectly vertical (ferris wheel) instead of a slight tilt.

Steve

To add .
I have been struggling a little lately. To much stress outside of golf
work related. My wife and I are buying the company I work for and
getting rid of 3 partners that do not want to do anything and want to
stick money in there pockets. I made them a offer and told them to take
it or leave it and if they refused to find somebody else to run the
company that I was going to find something else to do.

So we are signing our lives away today at the bank. At least now I do not have to worry about having a job one day to the next.

I can worry about golf now instead. LOL

Did you put up new videos of this? If it's working and not causing you pain, I don't see a major problem. It may well be an adjustment for your own physique, or it's a correction for something off in the setup. Hard to say for sure.

Surge,

My last couple of rounds have been nothing to write home about and you guessed it, SETUP.  I can almost always trace bad shots back to my setup.  If one of the building blocks is out of whack the result will not be good.  Good to see the reminders on getting back to basics.

Off topic.
Changing out my wedges taking out of the bag LW 7* bounce SW 8* bounce GW 8* bounce  and PW . Adding 60 LW 10* bounce, 56 SW 12* bounce 52 GW 12* bounce 47 PW 10* bounce all Ping Tour S wedges. Irons I am playing Ping G20 9 iron - 5 iron, 3 hybrid ,17* FW ,13 * 3W , Driver. I rotate between my 3w and a 4 hybrid depending on were I am playing.

My wedges are 7-8 years old and time to replace them anyway.

Played Sunday with my buddy we had a 9:15 tee time he showed up at 8:50 I was waiting on him to show up. He gets out of his car and starts walking towards the club house to play and turns around says Mike I forgot my golf shoes. I told him it was to late to go back and get them to play in your gym shoes. That was a mistake he has not beat me in over a year he has been struggling upper 70's low 80's. He shot 34 on the front and 36 on the back with a double bogie on 18. I shot 75 .

He was lucky it was dry out.

Surge:  Another great video and reminder about proper posture!   When I start having trouble with my swing, I always go back and review the basic set-up, or  GBSAPS (Grip, Ball position, Stance, Alignment, Posture and Swing).  Seems like every swing fault can be traced back to NOT properly executing one or more of these basics.  Thanks again for everything you do and for the time you spend helping us learn the PPGS.  R2

Dear Surge,
After watching your daily video today and seeing you and Greg Mc. struggle with
the microphone,  why don't you both wear head mics.  That would leave your hands
free and we all could hear what each of you are saying.  I'm positive this would be
a welcome improvement for all involved.

to ALL:

Back from vacation now! Gret 2 1/2 weeks in Port Orchard,Wa - away from Phoenix heat!!
But talk about a complete change of pace - the golf course we played on was extremely hilly, cut in the middle of a pine, cedar and fir forest -- Not a level lie to found on the entire course and several blind shots to the greens.  Been many years since I played to greens that were a good 50 or 60 feet above or below the fairway!
Now back home on my "flat as a table top" home couse -- played 3 rounds in the 80's -- 87, 85, 88 - in spite of freshly aerated greens and fairways. Should be back to "normal" sometime next week.

Keep hitting them STRAIGHT and LONG

I am going to give it a try this weekend. I have Asics running shoes they are the most comfortable shoes I have. They have great arch support and I do not have to wear orthotics when wearing them.
