Surge's Prescription For Tiger Woods

Mon, 10/03/2011 - 20:34 -- Don Trahan

Today's video starts with an email I received about a month ago from Randy W., one of my long time students. He sent it just after Rocco Mediate spoke with a reporter from the San Francisco Chronicle about what Mediate thought about Tiger Woods' current swing. [click for full article]

"Surge, we talked about this and you mentioned to me many months prior to this story -- the interview by Rocco Mediate that Tiger's newer swing was all wrong. Sounds like Rocco should - could be a vertical swinger? The" heavy club" and "swinging around his body" comments are right out of your teachings. Tiger's body is breaking down as he ages. So, see, even the one time best golfer in the world is infected with bad swing habits that's causing him pain!"

Rocco went on The Golf Channel's Morning Drive the next day and gave a very good rationale for why he thinks Tiger's current swing coaches are not doing him any favors. [click for audio interview] He also said that he hoped Tiger will get himself healthy so that he can be on tour regularly playing at the level he has played at for so long. It would be good for golf, Rocco said, and I agree with him 100%.

As we have talked about so many times over the years, the modern rotational swing, taught by practically every golf instructor on the planet, is eventually going to create severe back, knee and joint problems for the majority of golfers, amateur and professional alike. I can't help but feel that the golf industry is doing great damage to the sport by continuing to advocate a swing theory that most orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, and physiologists cite as the #1 reason for bad backs and knees in the patients they see.

So please watch today's video tip--it's part instruction and part public service announcement. If you know someone who suffers from the ill effects of a rotational swing, please send them a link to this message. If they commit to learning the Peak Performance Golf Swing they can end the cycle of pain and start enjoying golf again. That will be good for them and good for the game we all love.

Keep it vertical!

Or maybe show the rest of us how to hit the fairway 80% of the time. ;-)

The guys on Tour too. I think 75% is leading the tour and the tour average is 60%.

What type of equipment did you use to measure that nano-second and how much Tiger lifts his club during that period of time? Do you even understand how short a nano-second is?

On another note, would you please turn off your caps-lock on your keyboard? Typing in all capital letters is considered shouting and extremely rude. Thank you for your kind understanding.

I have a tendency get get what I term as "lazy" about controlling the club in the takeaway. When I do I get in a position similar to what it sounds like you are describing. That point about halfway up in the back swing is really the make or break point for how well I am going to hit the ball. I can get away with some errors in the rest of the swing but if that point is off much at all I'm pretty much done and the rest of the swing is one gigantic adjustment just to hit the ball. Plus I lose most of the easy power.

There is a "magic" position in baseball just at the start of the swing that I have studied many hours on many different hitters where the bat is dissecting the head, through the eyes, from the pitcher's view and at an angle to the ball. All good hitters get to that position just as the ball is approaching even though they may have stood in the batter's box with the bat in varying positions.

Even though it's different in golf I still feel that there is a "magic" point in the back swing where it's almost impossible to mess up from. When I hit that point I can feel it and know that I am on the money and the shot is going to be good, even before the back swing is finished.
Now if I could only find a way to hit that spot more often.

Old, does not necessarily mean junk. Many older, well maintained vehicles, are actually better than some newer models. Many, if you have the right ones are actually quite valuble if well maintained or restored. The same applies to houses.

Actually, Alan, I care, along with many other people who feel a moral calling to help those in need. Tiger has lots of problems, including his moral compass, as you point out. However, he does not deserve to be thrown away with the trash. If anything I can say or do will help him to recover, then I feel obligated to try. I would suggest that you are also in need of therapy. I have gotten and am getting mine.

Really?  You have got to be kidding me?!  He is in perfect position at the top of the follow through in the "T" finish and ready to recoil.  His torso is dead straight down target line.  If he had over turned the sternum and belt buckle would be pointed well left of target. Locked left knee?  Don't think so.  Look at the hips.  They are perfectly level and he is well over on the left side. If the left knee was indeed locked as you say, the left hip would be a touch higher and the weight would be going towards the back and creating an inverted "C".

I really don't understand the comment!

If you look at the bottom of each email you receive daily, there is a link that provides just what you're asking for.  Look at the bottom of the email (below where it says "Change your email preferences").  There is smaller text that says, "Click here to forward this mailing with your personal message." Click that link and you are able to send it to whoever you like.

If you can't find that, all email providers/clients (Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail, Outlook, etc.) have a "Forward" option for every email you receive.  They are generally located at the top of the email near other options such as "Reply" and "Delete." Hit the forward button and you'll be able to forward it to whoever you like.

For those who are not subscribed to receive daily emails, another alternative would be to simply copy the URL of any daily blog page and insert it into an email that you wish to send.  For example, you would "COPY" "http://www.swingsurgeon.com/Da..." and then "PASTE" that directly into the email.  As is typical with most email clients, once you paste this URL into the body of the email, it will automatically become a clickable link when you send it to your friends.  Then all they have to do is click the link when they open the email and it will take them directly to the daily video.

Of course you can always direct your friends to this website and have them fill out the form at the top right portion of the screen that's labeled "Free Golf Tips!"  This way they can subscribe to receive daily or weekly emails from The Surge, thus building the Surge Nation as well as negating the need for you to forward them the emails that you receive.

Thank you and good luck,

Geesmagm,

Agree with most of your comments. Golf is certainly bigger than any one person, and you are right it does not need Tiger, However, it will and does definitely benefit from the past efforts of Tiger, and will continue to benefit even further from ALL future endeavors of Tiger. Just the fact that so many have commented here shows the undying interest still remaining in Tiger. TV ratings will jump this week, simply because he is playing. If he makes it to the weekend, Sat and Sun ratings will be much higher. People love to watch him contend, and Some People love to watch him fail, but either way, they love to watch and follow his exploits. The only bad press is NO PRESS.

It should also be noted, For what ever reason, whether personal notoriety, or actual caring, HE HAS done an extremely lot of charitable help to under privileged children. And his golfing has made major improvements to the incomes of hundreds of fellow golfers.

Love him or hate him, he has definitely made major differences for the better in thousands of lives. How many people can we say that about.

Don't get me wrong, Tiger has made mistakes.  But who hasn't?  It's easy to say you'd never do what he did, but how do you really know what you would do in his position?  I've always said, it's easy not to cheat when you don't have any options.  As for his moral compass, I wonder how many MILLIONS of dollars Tiger has donated to charities and foundations over the years.  It's gotta be up there.  Oh, and tiger only played in 6 tournaments this year and is still in the top 125 on the money list.  There's guys out there who have played over 25 tournaments and still not in the top 125, so I don't think his results have been too bad when compared to everyone else.  Tiger will find his way and who knows, he may get paired with Rocco at the Frys.com open and that could ignite some magic and good vibes from the 2008 U.S. Open.....

fyi...Do you know who finished 4th at the U.S. Open the year of Rocco and Tiger's duel??

None other than DJ Trahan!

JimmieJ's picture

No it isn't. There is no knee snap. DJ is finished in that picture. He is standing on the left leg and his body is more or less square to the target. His hips are square. That is about as relaxed as it gets right there. We can turn our knee and hips but not past the point of resistance.
DJ is NOT rotated past square with his arms over his left shoulder or farther and heavy causing stress or over rotation.

A message for Eldrick Tont Woods:

Tiger, the golfing world wants to see you get your body back into healthy shape so that you can get back to playing the extraordinary golf that we have become accustomed to over the years.    It saddened me to hear that you have recently dropped out of the top 50 in the golf rankings after many years as #1.

Please, please, please go see Don "Surge" Trahan and spend thirty minutes with him to pick up the principles of the Peak Performance Golf Swing.    Do this so that you can buy time while your body rehabilitates and you also can play top level golf.

After say 12 - 18 months when you body fully recovers you may then go back to your old swing if you want.    However it may be difficult to give up the new found FIR's and GIR's let alone getting back to wreaking your body for dubious gain.

Yours sincerely and with kindest regards, Craig Sadgrove

With camera angles, it's almost impossible to see every aspect of position with the right perspective. His left foot doesn't look very flared though :-).

I just got back online after some weeks absence without internet access. I missed the daily vids and comments and the Surge show broadcast is great.

If anyone is looking for winter golf reading, I stumbled across an old paperback titled  "Six Days to Better Golf" by Obitz and Farley published in 1977. That's back when they still were teaching a more vertical swing as Surge stated in his recent show. About 70% of it could have been written by the Surge and supplements his teachings well. If you overlook the obvious differences such as knee position and  full rotation, it's full of drills that emphasizes swinging and not hitting. That being my major problem ( and the problem for a lot of us), I think the book will be a quite useful addition.

I must need therapy, because I'm thinking you are a horses ass, too stupid to actually understand much of anything, let alone just how much Tiger Woods has actually given to the golf industry at large, and to hundreds if not thousands of under priviledged kids. What a loud mouth ignorant horses ass you are. Just my opinion though.

Not questioning your culture. Was talking about Tigers culture. I'm sure this rich old guy is rare you speak of. Still doesn't answer the question we'll never have an answer for. How we might fair if we truly were raised in Tigers place. It really has nothing to dowith how we think we'd fair. We can only speculate. This is only speculation. Anything we say in our present 54 year old bodies(or whoever and where ever) and life is based on the life we've had and yes our environmental culture, upbringing and genetics too. Don't misunderstand me. These comments are not questioning how you would do. It's more about how the average good man would do with the same opportunities.(King David was far from average). Of course there are always acceptions to the rule.

I'm all done. Feel free to have the last word:)
Looking forward to the webinar tonight with Surge.

Don,

I enjoyed your suggestions to Tiger Woods.  However - do you think he will be able to hit the ball as far with your swing as he does with the huge swing that we normally see him use?

Incidentally, I am 75 and hitting the ball 20 yards farther and straighter than I have hit it since I started playing at 63 - thanks to your swing.  Consistency is the challenge but I am still aiming at shooting my age!

Best wishes

That would be interesting. A limited turn 3/4 swing would be 90* and just past parallel for Daly I guess.;-)

I wish we could get Tiger to adopt the Surge swing.  Wouldn't that be great for all of us Surgites?  One of Tiger's biggest problems is that he swings too fast.  There is no need for anyone to swing at 120mph.  That is tearing up his body and leading to off-line shots.
