Flared Feet Reduces Stress and Strain

Mon, 08/15/2011 - 17:42 -- Don Trahan

In the Surge Swing, I give you parameters in which to base your swing. But, like I've said before, we're all different. Whether it's our body type, our amount of flexibility, or our skill level, we all have to find what works best for us. As you know, in the Surge Swing setup, we flare our feet outward at a 30 degree angle. I covered this recently in a response to a golfer who was having hip pain but I wanted to address this again today because doing this also relieves stress on other parts of the body like your knees and ankles, not to mention your back.

My parents once told me that when I was a kid, my feet were so flared outward that I couldn't even walk forward. I could only walk backwards! I even wore braces to help get me "straightened" out. So for me, I sometimes flare my feet as much as 45 degrees in my setup position. But just as a demonstration of what my body is able to do even beyond that, take a look at my left foot position throughout some swings on the range. I literally have it pointed straight at the target, parallel to my aiming line. I do not recommend that you try this if you are unable to flare your feet this wide without pain. It is really just to show you that what is comfortable for one golfer may not be for another and that we all have to find what amount of flare feels the best for our own swing.

So remember that all of us are different and as long as we stay within the parameters of the Surge Swing, there's no reason why we can't experiment a little bit in order to help our games.

Keep it vertical,

The Surge!

Bill, I'm getting fuzzy with my memory but my wtf came in between 36-38 inches and Doc built my driver to 44.5 inches and with an alpha v2 360cc head. So if we call  my wtf 36,my driver still is a 1/2" shorter than yours. You may want to choke down and see if you can find that happy place and mark it with some tape. I'm sure some of those more into the technical aspect of things will chime in soon.

Watching Surge's swings in this video a few times, I'm struck more than anything by how clear this position of his front foot makes the weight shift that is the bump. Watch his left knee as he reaches the top of the back swing.

Bill, chances are your driver shaft is too stiff for you now.  Suggest you try a Senior shaft, and possibly a shorter one.  The one Doc built for me is 43 inches, and 14 degree loft.  I hit one the sweet spot nearly every time.

Hijack ; - ) Steve was the guy who mentioned hammers not I. The T finish does indeed help to 'swing through the ball'. I also sometime ago put my marker logo on the front of the ball and that worked reasonably well.
My Kiwi mate has his own views.Rightly or wrongly, I respect that. He is is an inveterate fiddler with his swing. Have a great day in Oz

A passion for languages can be very helpful in golf. It gives you a greater range of ways to curse. ;-)

Ha ha!
It also depends on our definition of "work for him".
I can hit a ball with a 20 pound sledge hammer but I don't think I would score very well with it.

If profanity had an influence on the flight of the ball, the game of golf would be played far better than it is.  - Horace G. Hutchinson

Surge, That is such a great story that you've told before. I get such a kick out of your spunk and determination not only to beat the golf digest guy but to prove his advice not only false but to actually go and play the whole round with that close to 90* foot flare and beat him. You're a classic and a treasure to golf. We are blessed to have discovered you and hope you continue to share your experience with us for years to come.

Hi Robert, I got my swing filmed on You Tube.  How do I get it attache to my name on this blog?  Would much appreciate a clear step-by-step reponse since I´m not too practical with these sort of exercises.  Many thanks. Jack
