Are Your Golf Clubs Ready for Summer?

Thu, 05/15/2014 - 12:00 -- Don Trahan

I think it's finally safe to say that Old Man Winter has gone on vacation. With warmer temperatures now available to most Surgites, many of you will start getting into your regularly scheduled round (or rounds) of golf each week. But, are you happy with your golf clubs?

There's never a better time like the present to have a PPGS Certified Club Fitter take your measurements and build you your own set of custom golf clubs. Think about how much easier the game would be if you were using a set of clubs that were actually built specifically for you!

Today I'm going to share a story from a loyal Surgite who made the trip to see Doc Griffin, our director of club fitting operations. It just goes to show how much science goes into building a set of clubs.

Good Afternoon Doc & Don,

Doc I just wanted to thank you again.  My fitting session with you was fantastic and quite frankly the best I have ever experienced. Not only did I learn a lot about using the proper equipment, I also learned a lot about golf itself. My clubs arrived a week ago and the weather in Jersey finally broke enough where I was able to play a round with my clubs for the first time.  I am happy to say that I shot 81 the first time out and it could have been a few shots better. The clubs felt great and the added confidence in knowing that I had the proper tools allowed me to just apply the Swing Surgeon techniques and enjoy a great round of golf.  The right tools combined with the proper technique truly do help in making golf even more enjoyable. When you say that "better golf is only a fitting away" I for one can truly attest to accuracy of that statement.  I have never made a better investment than the day last month when I decided to extend my Myrtle Beach trip an extra day and take the drive to Columbia to meet with you.

Don, thank you for all you do with the videos, website and tools for us golfers to download and work with.  They are truly informative and most helpful.  I am looking forward to hopefully getting a lesson with you when you come to New Jersey in July.  And thank you for affiliating yourself with such professionals as Doc Griffin.  You both are truly a breathe of fresh air in the golfing industry.  Best wishes for continued success in all you do.

Getting fit clubs is a good idea for those who haven't I must concur. For those who won't or don't plan on it, getting your lofts and lies checked and corrected is cheap and really important as the minimum if you're serious about improving or gaining any consistency.

On a completely different subject I have some good news on my vision challenge. Just saw a vision specialist and it turns out it is a cataract in my right eye that had me thinking I was going blind in that eye. Surgery is now scheduled and should make that right eye clear. Can't wait. I have had a hell of a time lining up putts lately actually using my left eye. It had made it tough to use my laser range finder too. I did make two long putts for birdies yesterday so maybe playing half blind actually helped! Lol!
Nobody said growing older would be easy. Fight on I shall.

After the round I shot yesterday, I wonder what I could do if my clubs were ready.

I played at Chesley Oaks; the first round since I returned from Phoenix. As a preamble, I injured my right shoulder the day before I left Phoenix. I treated it as my PT had taught me and it seemed to be improving greatly until I tripped getting off my lawn tractor (I am a klutz!) and fell on the same shoulder 3 weeks ago. Long story short, I have a partial tear of the rotator cuff. I'm doing PT at home. In 2 weeks, we'll decide whether surgery is needed.

So, since the PPGS is pain free and I had been making swings at home with no problems, I decided to try to play. I played 18 with no problems except for lifting my bag on and off the golf cart, and once pulling the flag out of the hole. I managed to shoot 38 - 38 for a 76. To quote Hannibal Smith: "I love it when a plan comes together!"

I had a birdie, 4 pars, and 4 bogies on the Par-36 front and 1 birdie, 5 pars, and 3 bogeys on the Par-35 back. I hit 9 of 14 fairways, had 7 GIR, 7 up&downs, and 28 putts (14 per side) with no three-putts.

I attribute the good round to trying not to further injure my shoulder. I eliminated all attempts to hit the ball hard, just swinging smoothly and in balance. My drives were 15-25 yards short of what I was hitting in Phoenix, but they were much more consistent. On the 5 fairways that I missed, I ended up less that 6 feet off the fairway; trying to cut corners on 3 and rolling off on a sloped fairway on the other two.

PPGS is the absolute greatest!

Kevin,
Sounds like it all came together for you.
Really nice round! 14 ups&downs is an especially satisfying stat for a certainty.
That is such an important part of becoming a wizard around the green. Know what you mean about the 15-25 yards gained in the desert. Especially as things heat up. I have had to take one less club on all shots 190 yards and in. The ball seems to fly forever.
Got a couple boxes of the Wilson Duo's on Rockbottomgolf.com. They often have the best prices on balls and equiptment. Like a candy store so I have To control myself!
Anyhow, keep up the good play:)

Not golf related but as many of us slip into seniorhood and beyond I thought I'd share with you this hilarious video about old rockers, 'rock n rollers'.
Fellow Surgite Richard Higgins sent this to me. OMG!
